I don't pay attention to the other games too much at GN but the UTH table does does go up occasionally to $10 but not very often.

Since I'm never there on a Friday night or at all on Saturdays, I cannot speak to this, but for Thursdays, Sundays & Friday mornings?
Yeah - GN still has these games at $5 minimums...at least, they did this past March/early April.

That's kind of why I spend more time at 3-card than BJ these days. I'm here to exhaust $X gambling - harboring no illusion of coming back heavy - so it's important to enjoy what I'm doing. For a long time, I never played anything but Ante & Play. Finally got around to Pair Plus and Six Card. Add some excitement or entertainment value. But the downside is that in BJ, you're at $15 per hand and that's it. When you're playing $15 3-card, the bet goes up to around $40 if you tack on Pair Plus & Six Card Bonus. I have it in my head that the progressive used to be $1, but for some reason, last time out, people (not me!) were putting $5 on that. Not sure I dig that line of thinking. If I'd thought about it at the time, I should have put down $1 just to see Miss Dealer Lady would yell at me ... if it was, in fact, a $5 minimum.

fwiw, I've played $5 min 3CP at the Orleans one evening, which is about the limit I can handle on that game.

I don't make a habit of playing the mandatory side bet carny games at Golden Nugget but I will say that if you if you are playing low stakes and just looking for a novelty/fun gambling experience its not the worst thing in the world. On my last trip I was there with a friend who was a vegas virgin so we sat at the $5 lucky cat blackjack table for about 20 minutes. I actually ended up winning $75 on a $200 buy in because I hit a $100 wheel spin bonus on a blackjack. Weirdly, the dealer never busted on 22 so we never got to see the "lucky cat" bonus where the dealer shakes 5 dice and you win $ based on the number of lucky cats showing.

That being said, as a UTH player (who doesn't go heavy on the trips bet) I would rather play with 2-3 other people on a $10/$15 minimum table without a mandatory bet than play a full $5 table, elbow to elbow, with Jerome from Arkansas

I haven’t seen it anywhere except for Binion’s.
    Sorry Mike.
I recall seeing it at one other property (not the Nugget) but I don’t remember where.

Thanks for the post about the book.:clap::clap:

I ordered it on Amazon after I saw your post and received it yesterday, Pretty good synopsis of the games and I like how he keeps it relatively simple without getting bogged down in all the minutiae. I was a little surprised that it cost $37, but if the book helps me win even one hand, that I normally would have lost playing UTH, then it’ll be worth it.

The AP's were disappointed in this book. They thought it was going to be a follow-up to Beyond Counting "Exhibit CAA".

Having never read Beyond Counting, can you shed some light on why the AP's disliked it? Other than the fact that it wasn't the book they thought it was, what about the content of the book was disappointing? Looks like copies of that book go for $100's, so it must be well revered by the community.

Also, isn't "Exhibit CAA" already a follow up, or expanded version of Beyond Counting? Were they looking for Beyond Exhibit CAA? ;)

I'd definitley buy a set of strategy cards for carny games if they were available. I have the Bob Dancer cards from LVA.com and bring them with me every trip, no shame.

Because it's basically a Basic Strategy type book. AP's thought it was going to be something like BC ExCAA giving more ways to beat these games.

I am not at sucker side bet kind of player. I was at a blackjack table years ago and the dealer kept pointing out to me when I would have won the side bet. When she would pick up my cards, she would just tap the circle and say something like I would have won $5. So I just started pointing out every time I would have lost, which was about 1:7. Of course she knew I was winning by not playing it. And got tired of me pointing it out, so she shut up about it.

Yeah, I've done the same thing, with the same eventual result. They like pointing it out even when I flatly tell them I'm not ever playing it and I don't care what I could possibly win.

I get the impression that they’re supposed to “promote” the side bets given how profitable they are for the house. For all they know you could be a “mystery shopper” if they do that for casino games… so perhaps they’re just adhering to whatever standard is mandated as far as encouraging players to play side bets.

I’m sure they get much better tips on side bets too, which wouldn’t surprise me at all as a motivating factor for this.

Some casinos do employ mystery shoppers. I've conducted them at Parx in PA more than once, and I know they still do them now.

As far as tips, the side bets that have a minimum bet of $1 tend to reduce tips. That is according to a friend who formerly dealt in AC.

I could see that, instead of tipping all the dollar chips now the player bets some of them on the side.
