I don’t want to stay at the comped Golden Gate rooms anymore, so I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade to a Suite or get a standard room at the D for similar money. Thoughts?

If you are "OK" with the regular rooms at GG then I would say a GG suite would be a HUGE step up! I've only had one concern about the GG suites and that is the motion/infrared AC, but you seem to have managed with the "cooler" in the regular room. Even a standard room at the D would be a definite step up. Premium Corner King (The D) would be a step down from a GG Suite. If you are going at a slower time and are a gambler - I'd personally try the GG Suite and try to get the difference comped on the back end.

To expand on this - the GG Suites are nice. You get K-Cups, Fiji water, mini refer, a comfortable room, and a very convenient elevator ride to the casino floor. What you don't get are other amenities of a casino/hotel.
If you need a coffee bar, restaurant service onsite, and a comfortable room, consider the D. If the price point is about the same, I think it comes down to your personal preference in what you want/need from your hotel experience.
I've done both, each time it was dependent upon my specific situation.

Here's a video I took from Jan. '18 of a suite they comped me at the Golden Gate. Given a (comped) choice between the two, I wouldn't stay in a regular room at the D.

    Hi everyone,

I think the previous posts were missing the point of the question:

Is a premium corner king room at the D better than GG suite?

I've stayed in the D Suite, GG Suite, and seen "regular" rooms at the D and GG.

Agree that I would not stay in anything other than a suite at the GG. But if a D suite were not available, is a D corner king better than a GG suite?

GG gives a short elevator ride and a nice bathroom and sitting area. Only downside is the motion sensing AC. Both rooms have a couch (GG couch is bigger), both have a mini fridge.

I have a similar dilema coming in late March, GG suite or D corner king??

I've stayed in both....I would take the GG suite over the D's corner king.

The corner-king I had at the D was much noisier than the GG suites I've stayed in... but they put me on a lower floor, on the northwest corner... I suppose if you had a higher floor, facing south/east, it would be more quiet.

The question was specific to a GG suite or a D standard room. I don't think anyone missed the point :)

Strictly basing things on rooms alone, the GG suite is an obvious choice for me over the Standard D room or corner king.

For selfish reasons, i need to start bashing the GG suite because they're getting harder to reserve!!

I'll be checking into one ( GG suite) for my first time this Sunday. Actually, it's my first GG experience, ever. Although Plaza holds my heart, I'll admit, I'm excited to check out a new to me place DT.

I don't ask for much and am pretty easy to please. Heck, I am thrilled that they upgraded me right from the get go :). I'm sure it will be great!

Thanks for the info. The video was great. I was ready to do the GG Suite, but there wasn't any available. No problem, I'm fine with the D.

We recently got an offer for standard D room OR GG suite so we switched our reservations from The D to GG suite. The last time we stayed in a GG suite was just after they built them and we enjoyed a comped offer with limo pick up from the airport. Unfortunately we could not find any luck at the GG that trip so we low played them and never received further offers for a suite. We just got basic room offers or BOGO after that.

So we booked the suite this time for nostalgia sake and I'm looking forward to it! I planned to play more BJ this trip rather than video poker so I'm looking forward to staying at the GG.

(Even the VMB awards say the GG is best for table games and I agree! Thanks @Basil https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?posts/1993985/)

That's interesting because when I called in for the reservation I asked how many suites they had. My memory from following the story of the renovations to the GG years ago was that there were 5 or 6 suites at most added on to the hotel. When I asked the reservation clerk how many suites they had, she told me she was just guessing at maybe 15? I didn't comment but found that hard to believe.

Does anyone know how many suites they have? Google's not my friend tonight.

How did you like it @Happygirl21?

I had the offer for regular room at the D or GG suite, but when I called to book it they said it was not available on a Monday and Tuesday night.
I really had been wanting to try the GG suite.

@gambler hi there! I would say it was a good experience. As I had previously mentioned (elsewhere), I had secured an upgrade to a suite prior to arrival. When I got there check in was a breeze. I know there has been some chatter, here on the boards, regarding the AC. When we got into the room, the AC was great, the thermostat was at 62.5. There was never an issue with the AC clicking off. The room itself was spacious enough. I will admit the "dressing area" is a bit odd but all in all it was a good stay. I posted 2 pics in my most recent TR. We had no noise issues. My daughters room was certainly more Fremont Streetish but not so much that it bothered anyone.

My daughter and her bf stayed in a regular room and I can say, my master bedroom closet (in my old house :( ) was probably about the same size, lol. But they were content and for $21.00 (less the dreaded resort fees) it was fine.

As for gaming. I only play bj (with a few minor exceptions here and there). Gaming was fine, dealers were nice and most the pit critters were pleasant. I kind of wish I had checked with the host, prior to leaving, just to check on my rated play. I did check with the PB at the end of most sessions and it seemed pretty accurate.I'm curious to see what kind of offers I'll get in the future.

Would I go back? Sure. But to be honest, I will still pick Plaza as my dt home. I love the pool, the fact that there is a variety of food options is great, and of course, the service I have received at the Plaza has been fantastic.

I read your trip report @Happygirl21 and it was very informative! You had some great bj runs at GG and I loved your quirky bj hand. That must have been fun! Of course a win would have been better after all that work!!

I don''t recall the suite AC being a problem either so I was glad to hear yours worked 24/7. Being a woman of particular age, a dud AC system would make me very CRANKY! Thanks for all the info Happygirl.

And for anyone else interested, I read a report on 'vegas today and tomorrow' that said the GG was adding 16 additional suites to the hotel back in 2011. So they do have quite a few suites. There is a brief history off the GG that's interesting to read as well.

Apparently (it seems), GG is/has decided to deactivate/remove the motion-activated climate control in the suites... which is great news!
That was my only real complaint about them, and it seems to be a non-issue now.

It really wasn't that it was "a dud" system - it's just that it didn't stay cool while you were out & about on a July afternoon. Once you got into the room, it would kick-on and things cooled-off pretty quickly...but, yeah - for the first 5 minutes or so, it would be pretty miserable!

I read of others who had problems with it turning off at night while they slept, but I never had that happen to me... it was only when I wasn't in the room that it turned-off.

I'm glad that it's no longer an issue.

I'm staying in a Golden Gate suite this weekend, and I much prefer it to The D suites.

GG is ultra quiet, facing toward the back parking lot. The D is even noisier than it used to be since the new Fremont Street Experience, not to mention the bands at night and the calypso buskers during the day. No matter how high a floor they give you.

I like their L'Occitane toiletries and their free Fiji water. I like the big leather couch, the big (albeit old school) TV, the comfortable bed.

I also like how fast I can get from the room to outside.

I just feel immediately relaxed at the GG suite vs. any other room at GG or The D (well, I did get a tour of GG's penthouse suite but that seems overly extravagant for what I need).

The one issue is no food options inside GG (and I don't care for the taco truck), but I don't mind the walk to The D for their cafe, chili dogs, or steakhouse.

Circa needs to hurry up and open so we have another option!
