Loose coins

Just cashed in some coins. I do this before each trip and add the cash to my BR, but use it more like found cash. Meaning, knowing I have that little extra I might play a higher denomination VP for that amount or try a totally different game? Anyone else do this is some way? I'm using taptalk so I'm not sure the photos show?

 

Oh and I know I got the Amazon gift card, but that's to save the ten percent coin star takes if you take cash. So this extra $200 is in my mind only..

I am collecting quarters in a box of plastic rollers from my "coin collecting" days. When it gets full ($1000) worth, I was gonna take it to the casino, but they've started taking 10% at their Coinstar machines.

Not sure what I'm gonna do now, but I've got time (only up to $300).

 

I started collecting coins last year and have been going through lots of quarters looking for the special ones minted at West Point. I opened an account at a credit union that has a free coin counting machine for its members.

I have a 5 gallon bucket full of quarters sitting on the floor by my desk. When the bucket gets full, I scoop about half of it out into a reusable grocery bag. I've found that I can carry about $1800-2000 worth of quarters at a time, and I take those to the coin counting machine. Usually takes me about 5 minutes to dump them all in. Sometimes I fill up the bags in the machine and have to wait for someone to come change it out, but they're usually very quick about it.

Conveniently, we pass a branch of the credit union on our way to Vegas. A quick 15 minute detour and I have my bankroll for the trip. Last trip I also brought along a bag full of half dollars to play the coin droppers at El Cortez. I cycled them through once and took them to the cage to cash in. No fee, but I think they only take halves and quarters.

 

Yeah, I think my credit union now charges for using their coin machine.

 

Not so much "blurry" but because it is a picture of a video screen.

Yea... whenever we do the cash in, we take Amazon or whatever they are offering at the time. I think we did Southwest gift card last time.

On a related note...when cashing in TITO in Vegas - I always leave the pennies... sometimes even nickels. I just don't like walking about with the change.

Then again, more than once I have worked a $1500 tito down to less than a dollar and just give it to somebody as I take the walk of shame back to my room. LOL!

 

I just keep a big change pile in the room from all the TITO redemptions. Take it to the cage on the last day and they'll throw it in the coin counting machine for you.

 

every day when i get home i toss my change in the jar. when it gets full i take to the back and cash it in at my bank....no fee
Sometimes I buy lottery tickets or add it to my stash.

 

We do this as well.

 

I also collect all the random change that we accumulate along with any small rebate checks and add it to our bankroll. It's not much, but it adds 60-100 dollars to our fun money.

 

Our bank quit sorting coins for their customers, but they will give you the sleeves and you can do it the old fashioned way. No service charge when you cash them in.

 

When I have a TITO that comes out less than a dollar I usually leave it on a penny machine. The next person can put it in with their own money.

 

I've got an old paint bucket into which I toss whatever coinage I have in my pockets at the end of the day.There's a coin machine at the credit union, so I just go up there, run the coins, take the receipt and deposit in my account. I do this sometime each December.

 

We have some Mason jars we throw our loose change into. The last three years we have managed @ $2,000 in loose change for our "fun" money. Up here we have our Loonies and Toonies so it adds up fairly quick.

Unfortunately our bank has also refused to take loose change now and the Coinstar machine takes 12% up here I don't have time to roll coins.

 

Man...I recall the days I had "loose change" to throw in a jar or bucket, but it's been a long time... I pay for everything with a credit-card now. Felt kinda dumb at the pharmacy the other day, I had to pick-up 2 valium pills to take before a back procedure... came to a total of 6 cents... all I had was my credit card... the clerk laughed and said, "we'll take it from the change cup."

 

Guilty. Like others here, each afternoon I throw all my change into a big glass bowl. About every three months or so I’ll roll up all my pennies, nickels and dimes and exchange them at the bank for quarters. This is what I’ve socked away over the last five or six years. (Each bottle of Jack holds $300 worth of quarters)



This is my “Doomsday Fund”. It’s nice to know it’s there but just enough of a pain in the ass to roll up, and transport to the bank, that I continue to let it grow.....

 

We do the cashing in coins thing too, but my part of it only comes to about $35 A year or less. I hardly ever pay with cash, so not much change. I try to get as many points on credit card as possible which is like earning interest on my change throughout the year. My wife may have about $150 or so for her part.

We also save and recycle aluminum cans with our neighbors and the money from them goes towards parking at airport here and transportation/tips in vegas. Amounts to $75 to $100 A year depending on aluminum prices.

 

I don't use cash too often nowadays, so I don't have a surplus of coin like back in the old days. Although my bank (Chase) use to have free coin counting service for their customers, but they got rid of their machines like 2-3 years ago. Now, they want you to use those paper wrappers, if you want to deposit coin into your account. Although, the deposit will show as pending until the coins are counted. Why they removed their coin counting machines is really mind boggling, especially being a bank. LOL Some of the major grocery stores have those coin counting machines, but they aren't free, so I don't us them.

 

Ugh, I need to take my cans and bottles in. They've been taking up too much space in the garage, but I'm too lazy to bring them in and too cheap to just toss them in the recycling bin. I think I have like 10 trash bags full of bottles and cans...I keep telling myself that the most efficient way to do it is to wait until I have a full car load, lol.

 

The machines cost money to maintain, plus the labor to empty them out. Most banks contract with an outside company to handle their coins (Brinks, Loomis, etc.) and it costs them money to ship coins out.

You wouldn't believe some of the things people drop into the machines. I've found erasers, bottle caps, and all sorts of garbage. One time I swear someone must have dumped an entire vial of glitter into the machine, because I reached my hand into the reject slot to retrieve the coins that weren't accepted and it came out completely covered in glitter. That was a fun one to explain to the fiance.
