but all u have to do is send them an email and lyft takes care off the problem also gives u free ride credits ,if it happens with a taxi ur lucky if u get ur luggage back from him(true story)

 

Yep... so long as the driver is following the law with regard to taxi service, that would be correct...it's not "stealing".
If, on the other hand, the driver is told to not take the tunnel, and he takes it anyway, then the driver is in violation of the law... if he charges the airport pick-up fee from Linq, he is in violation of the law.
A passenger who accepts the metered fare and pays it has not been stolen from.
A passenger who is illegally charged for service would be comparable to a blackjack player being given $90 in chips for his $100 buy-in....or the dealer reaching over and just taking half of your chips from your stack.

Now, if I intend to give the driver a 10% tip, but I screw-up with my math & give him a 30% tip - that's not stealing either. It's my responsibility to pay my tips properly... it is not up to the cabbie to tell me, "Whoa! Hold on there, buddy - you tipped me too much!"

 

Last I checked, if the driver takes the tunnel to a strip hotel, he's in violation of the law. You have to give your permission for them to use the tunnel. It's not supposed to be something you have to object to. Now if you ask for the fastest route, that's not stealing. You actually asked to be tunneled.

 

That's true as well.
I've had cabbies tell me that the tunnel would be faster, and I always chuckle & tell them that it's not $7 or $8 faster!
I've also told them that, if they wish to spend their tip taking the tunnel, that was OK with me... none have ever taken me up on that offer!

 

true .it long hauling and there not allowed to do without asking off course the will say it shorter and theres traffic on tropicana so this will be faster.lol

 

Put them all out of business. Cant stand them. Only take one when I am running late/meeting someone and cant make it walking. Otherwise I need the 30min walk.

 

The taxi industry has itself to blame for its demise. Shitty service, cars that are death traps and high costs in most cities. I'm not a big fan of Uber/Lyft only because of the way they treat their drivers. If they made a bigger effort to encourage generous tipping since the fares are so low, then I would like them. I plan on using to services for my next Vegas trip. Paid parking was the last straw for me. I will tip the drivers well if they prove great service. What I mean by great service is simply a clean car and no long hauling. I don't think that's to much to ask for.

 

100% this was a mistake. THE CAB DRIVER HAS ZERO INCENTIVE TO DO THIS. He gets none of it. The entire $2 goes to the city. Now if you want to say he wasn't going to alert you to his mistake that's another story. Every cab driver has done this many times and it's never on purpose. The good ones eat it themselves and don't try to pass it on to the passenger.

 

After 35 years of taking cabs in LV I reached my breaking point last July. When I got home I signed up with Uber and I love it. I used Uber in November in LV and use it a lot here at home. The absolute hostility and dishonesty of the majority of cabbies in LV over the past ten years or so finally got to me. I can see no circumstance where I'll ever take a cab ride again, the Uber model (at least for right now) is far superior.

 

Is the uber/lyft pick up areas at Vegas strip hotels usually by the cab area?

 

I'm a cab holdout. Upon arrival I book a ride with one of the cabbies I follow on Twitter.

If I get an indifferent or jerkoff cabbie no sweat off my brow. I just don't engage them and their tip will reflect their attitude.

 

I am mad at Uber and lyft, they squashed my excuse to splurge! I always dreaded often having to nicely coach the cabbie on not long hauling me. Then I found Bell Limo VIP limo share. I'm frugal, but it wasn't much more than a cab, flat fee, and SO luxurious.

Then came Uber and lyft. The prices are so good I can no longer justify paying so much more for a 15 minute ride in VIP limo share! Dang you Uber and lyft, I can no longer justify my splurge!

And of course, I'm joking on not liking Uber and lyft, great prices, great service, and the one time I was long hauled? They immediately credited my account!

I do wish I could justify Bell Limo share as it's so fun, but as long as Uber and lyft stay solid, I flat can't justify the price difference....

 

As I've mentioned on another thread, I think cab drivers realise the bell is starting to ring on their industry and are just milking every cent until the end without any care.

It's like giving a redundancy to an employee and wondering why they aren't showing the same passion for the customer in the last few months of their tenure.

 

I suspect that many Uber/Lyft users would be prepared to pay slightly more than the cab fare for the better service, and I suspect that will be the Business Model that they are aiming for, with cabs ending up being the 'cheap but shoddy' way of getting around.

Uber and Lyft are so cheap even if they did 2 laps around the strip during rush hour surging it would still be less than $40

 

I've been long-hauled to/from the airport by Uber/Lyft drivers...some BLATANTLY.. I always just dispute it online and they refund me the difference (and rhe drivers get 1*)

 

Prob ex cab drivers with bad habits of ripping people off.

 

The most important part of this is the rating - with normal cabs there's simply no recourse, unless you go through the long-winded complaint process... If uber drivers drop below a certain rating then they're toast... Puts the power back in the hands of the customer.

 

It isn't true that the cab driver has zero incentive to do it, because even though he or she will not be getting the actual airport surcharge fee, it DOES boost the overall fare of the ride which would (theoretically) cause an increase in the amount of tip the cabbie receives from the customer. There is no way this cab driver "accidentally" did it - he probably does it all the time and just hopes that the passenger doesn't question it.
