Morning news here in Seattle reports two Tribal casinos will be open soon. Silver Reef which is up north, not sure of the size. The other is Tulalip, a large operation I've been told is about the nicest here in Wa. I hope the openings go well. My concern there, in LV or anywhere is down the line. I hope we don't get "comfortable" as time goes along and relax on the guidelines. The last couple of months have been no fun and I'd hate to start over from square one.

I guess I really don't understand the correlation between re-opening and preventing smoking? If it is because of the masks - I mean are they going to prevent you from drinking anything? You would need to remove your mask to do either thing.

Regardless, I only smoke when in Vegas, but having experienced a non-smoking casino in NOLA, I was fine with it. They had 3 outdoor areas with slot machines. I smoked far less. It would be nice if you could have a sign to put on the machine saying "Smoke Break" or something like that. So for me, as long as the casino provides some place that isn't a 6 mile walk to smoke, I'd be OK with that. In NOLA, it was actually kind of nice to go outside for awhile.

I really would have thought by now some second hand employee cancer litigation would have forced the issue by now. Nothing like a multi million dollar payout that changes policy!

They got bigger things to worry about than people smoking a cigarette in a casino. My guess is with all the hoops they'll have to jump through in order to maintain compliance to stay open, devoting staff to stop people from doing something they've always done will not be a priority.

There are already masks for sale that you can drink with and not take the mask off.
I believe there is a little flap you open and you can fit a straw in--also seems like there is something like that for smoking.
If all casinos became non-smoking not sure really if I would want to go even with a smoking area outside as who wants to leave their machine especially if you are doing well.
There are a lot of casinos that do have non-smoking areas but a lot of people don't use them

Nonsmoking sections are usually the graveyard for crap machines. No popular new machines, seldom even older popular machines. I know of a couple that are well partitioned, but for the most part they are side by side with smoking areas and smoke does not seem to recognize the dividing line. A well designed nonsmoking section, stocked with decent slots would be well used. My thought is that they are simply designated for the appearance of catering to that segment of customers, but they are actually designed to fail. IMO

I only smoke in Las Vegas, and I am of two minds on this, with pro's and cons. In the end, the only thing i think the casinos care about is keeping people plugging money into machines/tables. If they have to walk away, they may decide to keep walking. A body in motion prefers to stay in motion!

I agree...seems like they're established more to say they have it than for it to be a productive and fun area of the casino. Are they worried smokers will complain that all the good machines are in the nonsmoking area tucked away in an obscure corner? Years ago I had high hopes they'd convert the 2nd floor of the Cal to a nonsmoking area as the walkway up there by the shops is already designated as nonsmoking and it seems like it would have been pretty easy to market as the "only non-smoking room downtown," complete with full bar & VP.

I definitely agree with this for the casual player but degen gamblers are on the casino floor for hours and hours. After a few drinks their trips to the restroom become much more frequent and most of them are able to walk away to use the restoom and jump right back in where they left off. The main thing that will pull them away is food and/or their significant other. I wouldn't be surprised if a non-smoking casino pulled in more $$ from a smoker than a regular casino given that someone anxious to get their next nicotine fix might play a little bit less restrained than someone who can do both at the same time. This is obviously under the assumption that they don't just go to another casino where they can do both.

I know they have marketing geniuses who figure this all out, but here's questions I have that would affect how I'd do this. It's going to take smokers to answer this.

    1. If smoking were to be consolidated to a much smaller area, and this area was literally full of people smoking, is there a point where too much smoke bothers you?

    2. If the smoking area had nothing but shit machines, would you play them so you could smoke, or would you play the machines you like in nonsmoking?

    3. If your entire home casino went nonsmoking, would you move to another one where you could smoke, even if the location and casino floor weren't really to your liking?

    4. Does having other people around you who are smoking encourage you to light up? If no one around you is smoking are you less likely too?

I smoked for years. Used to play pool a lot after work and if I didn't have a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other, the world was not right. So I do get it. Again, we don't know for sure what is going to happen, but I think it's safe to say, we're going to see some changes. Curious what you think about these questions, if asking is allowed.

If you have ever been to Fallsview on a Saturday night, you can see that a non-smoking casino has no bearing on the number patrons. There are two outdoor balconies for smokers that even have machines on them including machines linked to the stadium bj/bacc/roul. Across the river at Seneca, it is smoking with a dedicated non-smoking section. Both appear to be busy. Seneca is much more of a local's joint where Fallsview is more touristy.

I rather detest smoking. I also do things that other people can't fathom doing. Hopefully my quirks aren't deleterious to them as their smoking is to us, but it is a known quantity and if I don't like it I don't have to go where it is allowed. With that, we tend to newer casinos with more elbow room and high ceilings. If we're playing it is likely to be M or RRR, as a result.

You are correct about some casinos and the machines that are put in a non-smoking area but the Beau Rivage has 2 non-smoking areas that have the latest machines--also Cherokee has a good size non-smoking area with good machines also

If we had access to something like that on the west coast we probably would rarely even go to Vegas, especially if table games were offered as well. I don't mind people smoking, they can do whatever they want it's their life and their body, I just don't want to be forced to participate so I'll move around as much as necessary to get away from it. It's sure fun when the habits of others affect when and where you can peacefully enjoy yourself because you don't want your SO to have to struggle breathing but those are the current rules we deal with. Til then it's a lot of avoidance and taking advantage of slower times of the day along with being able to call it quits early when necessary. If anything it helps with bankroll management so there's a plus there.

This sort of goes along with the other questions posted above by Catzilla. Almost all poker rooms are now non-smoking. I know poker attendance has changed a lot over the past 10-20 years due to other variables but I'm curious...how much of an impact has the smoking ban in poker rooms made on player attendance? I remember playing at Sam's Town a few years ago in their little non-smoking slot section which was right outside the poker room and a good number of players came out for a smoke break by the no smoking sign  so it is obvious many of them are willing to step away from their table for a smoke break. How much fun will be taken out of the game if everyone is wearing masks, glasses, and hats now...

I fully agree with this. However, I stopped going to night clubs when my Province went non-smoking... And so did 47% of their other patrons. I still went to restraunts as the experience lasted less than two hours and they allowed "in and outs", unlike night clubs.

I started going to Vegas instead. I had never gambled or thought seriously about going before. I started gambling $20 a night as two free drinks was a savings over buying one. 3 was even better.

A decade later as a non-smoker, I would not go to a night club, even if they let me pet a unicorn. I still do, however, frequent Vegas to gamble and eat.

This thread has drifted off it's original way too speculative topic. I'm closing this now. Thanks!
