I often come across videos on social media of people placing conspicuously large bets... in the sense that they'll stack several dozen smaller denomination chips (e.g., forty $5 chips for a $200 bet) instead of just doing eight $25 chips or two $100 chips. If it's just "for the video", I get it... and admittedly I can say I have gotten a kick out of betting a large stack of reds just for the visual of it all.

I saw an especially ridiculous one earlier today where the stack had to be at least 100 chips and it was visibly wobbly. I'm surprised the casino even allowed the bet to be honest, as if it were to have fallen over it would have been a real mess/hassle for everyone involved.

I'm sure there is no specific answer to this like "Casinos will only allow up to X amount of chips and that's it". However, I'm wondering if anybody has any insights or anecdotes as to what happens in these types of situations.

Does it ever happen that the dealer or pit boss says "nope, that's too much, you can place the bet but we have to swap them for larger denomination chips"?

Has anyone actually seen a "collapse" of a pile of chips take place? Wondering what the aftermath of that would be like...

I feel like this could be an interesting topic to discuss either way, as I'm sure somebody here has a really cool story to share :)

Its not just for online videos. I have seen it happen multiple times. Especially in Tunica years ago where there was one local that would play high limit bac with me and would stack dozens of black chips when he was good and hammered.

Not aware of any rules against it. I have seen the dealer color up smaller wager stacks before, but never a really big stack.

I've only seen stacks up to about 20 or so in real life, and no one really has a problem with those.

I just did a double down of $25x1chip plus $5x20 chips. It wasn't for video or my own amusement. It was a result of my betting strategy.

Not sure if I have ever heard of a limit but if you knock them over onto the floor, good luck getting them all back!

I'd imagine a craps table would be more likely to limit stack size if the rolling dice could knock it over and cause a problem.
I've seen super tall stacks at BJ quite a few times and I do not remember a winner!

Never seen a huge stack at craps, only BJ, bac and roulette. I have seen some stacks maybe ten chips high at craps (including ones I have put on the felt), but that's the tallest. Sene plenty of craps stacks get knocked over (sometimes intentionally) by a shooter. The crew has always been on top of knowing where to replace each chip

So one time when I was playing BJ there was a big player who insisted on playing and getting paid only in black chips. He was betting 3, 4, 5 thousand a hand that way. Table went on a good run and we had all the black chips on our side of the table. They refused to refill again for this guy saying there would be no room in the chip rack if we started to lose for that many chips. He wasn't budging and got irate with a tall stack in front of him and ended up knocking his stack over. It was a PITA. They had to go to the cameras to determine the size of everyone's stacks or something and it took forever. I couldn't even get up and move to another table with my chips(I could move but they would have to contact me later to get my correct amount of chips) as they had to do a review to ensure everyone had the right amounts. Eventually they worked it out. They were still refusing to reload more black chips and the guy was still being a major ******bag about it. I got up and left.

This sounds like something that would have happened at Trump Marina back in the day.

I heard that AC has/had a law or something that the maximum chip size was $5000 (don't know how true that is) so whenever a High Roller or whale would be betting hundreds of thousands of dollars a hand, they would have to bet with big stacks of $5000 chips every time.

Mid 2010s I played HL single zero roulette at an east coast casino where everyone at the table (myself included) was playing big on #17, the stack on it was probably at least a foot high (I have no idea how many chips that is) for at least 10 spins. Unfortunately it never hit. When clearing the table after each spin, the dealer carefully disassembled it in multiple pieces instead of just knocking it over and raking it with the rest of the losing bets.

Kind of sad that I have ever witnessed something like this in all my trips. I have seen maybe... 10 chips stacked up.

Happens all the time at poker tables.. and they get knocked over all the time at poker tables. I'll stack up high, but always pyramid style so they're stable. Others just make 50 or 60 chip stacks that fall down when the table gets bumped, which happens frequently. In cash games, it's pretty much a guarantee that the stacker is losing some chips in the process. Tournaments can get really ugly so dealers and floor tend to police that a bit more.

by pyramid stack I mean like this:

    Two stories to add here...

One night at the D, pretty merry, bought in at roulette for 1 or 2 hundred.

Feeling a little over confident covered the table with a stack of about 25-30 one dollar colour chips on my fave 26.

I wasn't even watching when some random guy nudged me and high fived me. I look down and see the dolly on my pile on 26.

Get paid out and obviously load up 26 so it's about 75 chips high. Dealer called the pit boss, pit boss said take it down, I asked if he was serious, he 100% was serious so I took them all off. No 26. Walked away. A real buzz kill!

The other was at Circa whilst on my best blackjack run ever.

Happily adding 50% to my bey each time but I just kept winning and winning and winning.

Pit boss came over to observe what was going on, he was the exact opposite, chatty and friendly. I had a huge stack of 25s in play and the only thing he did was ask the dealer to start paying me in blacks. When she asked why, he said because he has more in that stack than you have in your rack.

    Good times!

    Good question NFC!

As in… 26 hit on the second time?!

I would have been pissed! Assuming those were 75 $1 chips, that would have been over a $2,600 win :(
