I would respectfully submit that anyone missing the feel of old Vegas should step into the Freemont buffet for lunch or dinner. The buffet aint great but holy smokes is it ever cool in there. But I would hurry because once they renovate it.....it will look like every other place.

I miss the Westward Ho 5c coffee and the lovely cheap cake you could buy when you bought said coffee. It was the best cake I ever had in the USA. It reminded me of my grandparents cafe cake. Great memories!

I was only there once, yet I still remember the announcer telling everybody to go ENJOY A FREE SUNDAE and a 99c Margarita.
It was corny and fun and I just loved it.
Wish I'd had more time to enjoy the place.

Me too! We only visited a couple of times on our first and second trips. Didn't bother much again until I heard it was leaving us. Then it was a shadow of its former self and sad to see. My mistake. It was so much fun in its heyday.

In one day, I consumed an entire Ho Dog and ate at the Riviera 24 hour buffet. This resulted in my body being purged of all its impurities, as well as at least a couple vital organs.

The major thing I miss in Vegas is actually at the airport. I really miss the loud slot machines making their old school "slot sounds" once you're off the plane and walking towards baggage. Now the machines are pretty quiet. It was such a happy sound to hear....you know right away you're in happy land!

We learned about it after ballys stopped cheap late night breakfast at the Tequila Bar (also gone). We only ate it one trip.

Riviera's buffet was open 24 hours?!?!

We thought about eating there because they gave a free buffet to new members. Considering how dead the casino was that night in Dec. 2011, I insisted on checking buffet before signing up. One person was eating there before 8pm, I also took a quick look at the offerings. I said "nope". The gf was really pissed, but I think I made the right call.

Same here. Cheapo Vegas was an awesome guide that got me off the beaten track into places like Gold Spike and Western.

The old site is still available at https://archive.org/web/ if you are so inclined.

    RE: The Westward Ho...
In the late 90s, the daytime pit-manager was this tall, completely bald white guy...friendly as hell... when his shift ended at the Ho, he dealt blackjack across the street at the Riv... one morning, my buddy & I walked into the Ho to see if their 3-card table was open - it wasn't...place was dead...a few people playing slots & not a single player at any table game... as we started to turn & walk out, this pit-manager says to us, "Hey! Where are y'all going? Play a few hands!"
We tell him that, if he'll move the dealer from the empty 'SuperFun 21' table to the 3-card table, we'll play.
He asks us if we'll buy in for at least $100 each... (& of course...that was always the 'standard' buy-in at any table game!). So, he does it.

"Why is that worth 'nostalgia', topcard?"
...because no Vegas casino will ever do something like that anymore... what one hears today from any pit is: "That table will open at 11", (or the equivalent).

By the way - does anyone else remember when all of the blackjack shoe games were 4-decks? I miss those too.

I'm not sure I "miss" the Ho Mega Dog. But I did respect it.

I've been going to Vegas and have killed a lot of brain cells over 40 years :drunk: But, the Riviera's Sunday Brunch buffet was terrific. It was on the first floor, in the back in the showroom. Sundays only.

That's where I learned craps, too. And yes, parking there to access nearby points on the strip was so nice.

I don't actually miss the 99-cent half pound hot dogs at places like Boardwalk and Slots-A-Fun, but I miss the idea that such cheap eats were available. During my first few years visiting Vegas I'd have one hot dog for a meal every trip. I retired from the giant hot dogs long before they disappeared from the strip, but I miss silly little cheap eats like they served at Boardwalk, and Mermaids for that matter.

I miss Riviera mostly for the pinball access.

There was a short period of time during the late 90's when the Riviera offered a buffet during the overnight hours. I don't think it lasted long but it lasted too long.
