The Bene Israel are a community of ethnic Jews, historically residing in India for many generations. In traditional Indian society, they made up the Shanivar Teli (oil presser) caste. Jewish scholars Maimonides and David Rahabi wrote of this isolated community in the 1100s and 1400s respectively, but it was not until the 19th. century that they were introduced to normative Judaism.
