So I was playing a 1-2 no limit game at my local casino yesterday and this happened: 2 players left in the hand, player 1 at seat 3 and me at seat 6. Board is showing 2 pair 4's and 6's. Player 1 bets 25 and I call. As soon as I call he says "you win" and apparently showed his hand which I did not see him show. I mucked my hand. He is upset because I mucked, calls the manager over and the manager awards him the hand even after he pulled my 2 cards (they were on the edge of the muck pile) and saw that my hand was better than his. If player 1 declared that I won the hand why did I have to show my cards? I understand IF I saw him show but I never did.

you mucked your hand without showing, your hand is dead. If he showed he wins the hand

To your original question...yes. You most certainly messed up. You called, he must show first. Just don't do it again!!!

You don't muck unless you're folding or the pot has been pushed to you and everyone else has folded.

Did he muck his cards before you? If he did, YOU should have been the winner even if you mucked.
If he still had his cards in front of him & hadn't mucked, he wins because you mucked.
I did this once in a tournament; showed my cards IN MY HAND but did not table them. Flipped them & they hit the muck so I LOST.
ALWAYS TABLE YOUR CARDS; or at least do nothing until your opponent mucks or the chips are shoved toward you.
You called so in theory you are entitled to see your opponents cards tho you are not required to show your own, unless you must show to win.

My mistake then. After he said "you win" I thought I saw him make a motion towards flipping his cards into the muck pile. That's when I mucked mine. Apparently he pulled his cards back and I didn't see him turn them over.

If you are not planning to show until he does (as is your right), always best to wait for him to table cards or for dealer to push you the chips (dealer acknowledges his muck).

If you are not playing with people long or don't care what he has, just table your cards.

It is a bit of a angle shoot on the part of the guy you played against, especially if you see him do it often. But still, you are responsible for your cards.

Brother, you fell victim to one of the most common angles. You keep you hands on your cards, shown or not, until they push the pot to you and have collected ALL the other cards. They don't get my cards, barring a tournament all-in situation where both hands are automatically tabled, until the pot is pushed to me.

It works well, that way I don't forget to tip in the same motion as giving the dealer my cards.

This was deliberate by the other player. The above is good advice. Show if you need to, want to, or you are uncertain. Hang on to them until the pot is shoved to you. Then pass your cards back to the dealer.

taaff nailed it. You got suckered by a bad angle shoot.

I like to think of my cards as the "receipt" for the pot. They stay in my hand until the pot is pushed to me.

It's an easy mistake to make if you haven't played many - don't feel too bad, we've all done this, whether the other player was intentionally trying to get us to muck or accidental in nature. Learn from it, don't do it again, and find a new one to kick yourself about next time :)
