so I can still carry my stash of little bottles in my purse, and add to my bottle of soda, or cup of soda from casino? LOL

 

Wow that's retarded. I was never a huge fan of down town but after reading this I'll probably never go back.

 

So all drinks from casinos will now be served in plastic? Somehow I doubt that. Now I can no longer carry a beer I "legally" obtained from a casino out on the FSE. Wow. This is probably going to get real ugly, real fast.

 

Yeah, this won't end well. Not allowing people to carry their beers from casino to casino or under the canopy will do nothing but destroy Downtown. The whole 'Go Cup' thing that works in New Orleans just ain't gonna cut it in Vegas. And when they start ticketing folks who don't know about the change in the law, it's gonna be a nightmare.

I would rather see them get the beggers, and homeless out of there...than the good natured intoxicated people. I enjoy freemont street, and love being able to drink and enjoy the music....but I refuse to have to sit at a machine to get a drink, or pay for watered down overpriced liquor. If the person is not creating a problem, leave them alone...if they are drunk and obnoxious and causing danger....haul their ass to jail

 

I think the city is attacking this problem in the wrong way. The folks drinking beverages and meandering casino to casino are not the issue. I see the problem starting every afternoon at the Main Street stage. This is where the party starts. At 4:00 a DJ starts playing obnoxiously loud music. The music they play reminds me of a "trailer trash wedding", (no offense intended to those who live in trailers) with songs like the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, Macerna etc.. This just creates an energy that attracts the wrong kind of crowd. When I walk by that area around 7-8:00 I see the same group of drunks whooping it up and stumbling over themselves and others. I have no issue with people having a good time, but winding people up at this time of day, is asking for problems later in the evening. Also, the Main Street stage was a bad idea from the start. All the sound goes straight down Fremont and there is almost no way to escape the din.

 

Well your title is very misleading, alcohol was not banned. I have no problem drinking from a cup. Casinos will serve it in a cup. What's the problem?

Casino gives you a drink in a plastic cup. You carry it out on FSE. Enjoy. What's the problem? It's going to end with you having your drink in a plastic cup. How is that ugly? Unless you are bringing your own 12 pack of Bud Light in cans and forgot your Big Red Solo Cup. I'm cool with plastic.

 

I see the Solo Cup as half-full. Now someone can open a high school kegger themed casino!

The problem is not everyone gets their drinks from the casino. You can sit at a machine for an hour and not get a single drink or you can go to the bar and pay $6 for a beer. If I want a cheap beer now I'll go to one of the many little gift shops thats sells tall boys for $3, now I can't do that.

 

The gift shop will provide a plastic cup, they are smart.

 

The problem I have with this is that somehow taking away cans and bottles is supposed to reduce the issues they are having with the area turning into a drunken free-for-all at night. Maybe it's a coincidence, but I noticed a huge change in the make-up and behaviour of the people on Fremont when they opened multiple stages for music/DJs and allowed all the casinos (only those affiliated with the FSE of course) to open outdoor bars. So instead of people who were drawn to Fremont for good gambling, and between gambling sessions wandered around with cheap drinks enjoying the canopy show, there are now people who go there to only drink and party hard.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but I have to think it detracts from people gambling (why go into the casino to get a drink and so get drawn to a slot machine or table game when you can get the drink outside), and certainly seems to have drawn in a totally different crowd than when I first started staying downtown 4 years ago. I stayed at GG and MSS for 5 nights last trip and spent as little time on Fremont itself as possible because it was just too crowded and loud.

Of course, I'm getting older and grumpy too

 

It is possible, but I doubt all the casinos will have only plastic cups being served by Sunday.

 

I didn't see anything about casinos having to serve drinks in plastic cups.

The law just says that you can't drink from original containers under the FSE canopy, be they glass, metal or plastic bottles or cans.

So casinos would have no problem selling drinks in bottles at their bars or providing customers with complimentary bottles of beer at the slots/tables... just that the customer can't take that bottle out on to Fremont Street if they haven't finished it and are leaving the casino, nor could they buy a bottle or canned beverage from one of the souvenir shops and then crack that open and start drinking that under the canopy.

Since it does say "original container" there shouldn't be any problem with buying yard long slushie drinks or a football/guitar/boot full of beer and consuming that under the canopy.

And the law isn't to stop people from drinking Downtown or to keep the bums and hobos at bay: it just goes back to that law they passed earlier banning alcohol from the canopy to El Cortez, where the bars, pubs and restaurants want to sell their alcohol and want to keep people from getting around buying their more expensive drinks by going to a Walmart or ABC or gift shop and getting something cheap or walking around with a comp bottle of beer.

Things like this go through because the bar owners can get together and lobby for laws that better serve them and their interests, and since there is nobody on the other side of the argument (the tourist side) to argue and lobby against it and grease the palms of the politicians then laws like this will go through.

Now I dont typically carry drinks around downtown I usually finish them in the casino or just set them down since I'm getting another one free at the next place, but this thing really pisses me off, who the heck are they to tell us we cant carry a bottle of beer out of the 4-queens and walk across the st to the fremont? This is the kind of thing that may make me stop going to vegas, and I'm not kidding.
