I've managed to get 2 weeks at the Nugget for under $800 in June, so am likely to be heading out again this summer.

Virgin have a rewards scheme on at the moment, which will mean my flights cost around $500 direct. Unfortunately they don't have any availability on the 22nd when I would like to fly out.

What they do have is flights on the 20th, however, due to the EDC that is a hugely expensive weekend, and for those 2 nights at the Nugget it's ~$500.

I have found those 2 nights at the South Point for $150, so am highly tempted to book it up and just have a couple days relaxing before I hit Fremont Street.

Are there a few other resorts nearby, so that my friend and I could explore a bit without having to head to downtown or the strip?

Thanks in advance, and apologies for the longwinded post :)

Love the South Point rooms. They have an several bars / dining options and an ok bar / restaurant across the street but nothing else close by w/o a car.

They have a shuttle to/from the Strip (about $15 RT, or a free one to the airport). If you have a car, the Silverton is not too far away and you can check out GVR, M Resort, and/or a few casinos in Henderson (Sunset Station / Fiesta Henderson, a few dive casinos). Cab fares will run you a bit from South Point to anywhere.

You can also book Golden Nugget on Hotwire (4 Star Fremont Street Hotel) for $159/night, though you'll get a Carson Tower room for that price ($237 or $259 buying direct on Hotwire). It's $153 on Priceline. Golden Nugget is the only 4 star on Fremont Street.

I had a weekend stay at the Flamingo w/ tournament, but I changed it to a 5 day weekday stay at Caesars Palace, hoping to stay on a comp offer in June. Hope I'm not stuck w/ a high rate that weekend.

    Good Luck.

Are you saying $150 for both nights or each night? If both, that's a great deal, because they just sent me an email for one of their "7 Day Sales" and it's $120 per night for June 20 & 21. If you meant each night, try promo code EDEAL14 and see if they'll give you the $120 rate. (I'm not any kind of High Roller or anything to get that rate; I've just stayed there a couple times.)

South Point is great! Stayed there in October and really liked the place.
The rooms were spacious and very quiet. Their cheapest room comes without a view. My window faced a huge cooling tower for the A/C system. Upgrade to the next level of room so you can see something other than an orange painted wall. lol

They have more slot machines than any other casino on the strip. More Video Poker games as well. There's so much to do there, that you really don't need to go anywhere else. Bowling alley, movie theatre, lots of food choices, and cheap liquor in the gift shop.

About 3 or 4 miles South of there is M the resort/casino. I went there and it felt kinda "stuffy" inside. I just couldn't find myself getting comfortable there. The employees didn't smile and say "hi", the machines were tight as heck, and the "vibe" of the place just didn't feel right to me.
But you should go there and check it out!

The South Point was $150 for both nights, which I thought was an incredible deal, and the reason I had decided against the Nugget

You've definitely sold me on the place, Smo. However, I have managed to find 2 nights at the D on Fremont for the same price. I actually wouldn't mind a couple days at South Point chilling out once we land, before the 2 weeks of carnage commences on Fremont :drunk:

I suppose that I will have to see what the other guy I'm travelling out with wants to do, and then go from there. I have my own room at the Nugget, but I figure while we're still in transit I'm ok with sharing for a couple days until we get there.

Thanks again for the advice everyone, much appreciated.
