Non-gambling stuff to do on and around Fremont?

Here's the situation. My wife and I are moving across the country and are going to be spending a few days in Las Vegas during the move.
Since we are making such a huge move, and while she is transferring I will most likely not be employed, our budget for our time in Vegas is limited.

With MyVegas and a few other comps we will have a fun couple of days, I'm sure. But recently we've decided to add a few hour excursion to Fremont.

My wife is not a fan of the area. The first time we went there was about 2am on Wednesday and it was dead. I enjoyed the sights because I love old Vegas, but she couldn't have cared less. The last time we were there we went on a Saturday night on Labor Day weekend, it was packed and she didn't exactly have a blast that night either.
This time we are going during the day to Neonopolis to check out the Toy Shack. But seeing as how this will be way out of our way, I'd rather us have at least one or two other things to check out while we're there.

Not really looking to gamble, or to spend a lot of money. We have show tickets and restaurants we are going to be eating at on the strip.

But any other free - cheap places of interest in or around Neonopolis and Fremont that you would suggest us checking out?

 

I can relate to your wife’s assessment of Fremont, it’s not for everyone. I mentioned in a recent post that the number of people holding cardboard signs asking for money seemed to really skyrocket last time I was there, and it can put a damper on things.

But I digress. Of course the main free draw is the light show, but a daytime visit puts the kibosh on that plan. Here are some free or relatively cheap suggestions:

• I love to sample microbrews, so in a few hours you could wander to Main Street Station, Banger, and hopefully the new Plaza Beer Garden (if they ever open) and sample everything. Not sure if your wife is a beer person but there are plenty of good drink options (MSS Bloody Mary is excellent). Banger is right beside the Toy Shack, by the way.

• I hear the Mob Museum is really good and it gets excellent ratings on Tripadvisor. It’s not free but I think coupons are available.

• Finally, I hear really good things about Mike Hammer at 4 Queens. Again not free, but way cheaper than just about anything you’ll find on the strip, and it’s an early evening show.

I’ve gotten so many excellent suggestions from this board on virtually every topic, I’m sure you’ll end up with a ton of good options.

Definitely the Mob Museum, but only if she is a fan, or at least would have a passing interest in the Mob & their influence in Vegas.

Depending on your interest level, you can easily spend hours in there, or you can walk through in under an hour. Up to you. Me, I spent 3 hours in there, but my wife bailed after about 90 minutes.

Take a $20 into Mermaids and do some people watching while playing nickel slots. I played slots in that place 3 nights last trip and there are some interesting characters in there. That $20 lasts quite awhile. I know you said non gambling, but its fun nontheless

 

Walk along Fremont Street to the East and see Container Park - particularly at night so the Mantis is firing. Along the way you'll see the many cool improvements to that area.

If you're Elvis fans, go check out the King's Ransom at Binion's. It is $10 admission, or $5 with a card. I loved it.

 

We like to see the gold display at Golden Nugget and next to it is a gold vending machine. You never know, someone might actually use it! Upstairs at The D is the Sigma Derby. It doesn't cost much to play a few rounds of horse racing. One time my husband and I played for an hour on $10. And cocktail service was great. Thumbs up for the Mob Museum. It was interesting and educational. You can go through it fast or take your time and spend hours there.

 

Make a reservation at the neon boneyard. Not far from downtown and something neat to see!

 

Go to MSS and check out the architecture! Walk down the hall where you check-in. There are a lot of hand crafted pieces of furniture and displays of old slot machines. Ask one of the security guards to take you upstairs in the elevator to see the billiards tables and more furniture. There is also a rail car that you can go into, but when I was there it was unavailable for viewing.

I'll read the thread with my wife tonight and we'll come up with a couple things to do.

RE: The Mob Museum. I haven't been yet, but with my interest in the mob and Vegas' history I think I could easily spend a few hours there. I've mentioned it to my wife in the past and she's not too interested. We'll be planning another, longer trip either later in the year or early, early 2015, so I'll probably have to wait until then to go check that out.

I really like the jerky store, If it's dried they have it from Fruit to Nuts to Meat . There is one just East of the Freemont Casino and another in the Plaza casino I believe.
If you are a fan of the show American Restoration, Rick Dale's shop is fairly close to Freemont street. Gold and Silver Pawn the store from the Pawn Stars tv show is also relatively close.

 

You are a short bus ride away from the Children's Museum, the Museum of natural science and the original Morman settlement which started it all and is now a state park. All are interesting if you like those kind of things. Upstairs in the D, the Scintas play several times a month. They are siblings from Buffalo NY and have played LV for years on and off. The sister Chrisse has taken some time off due to problems with her vocal chords but they have a substitute and is a great show with half price tickets at TIX4TONITE. Another good show is Gordi Brown at the GN, great show for cheap.

Check out the pawn shops off the side streets. I once bought a gold & ruby ring VERY reasonably. It was a whim to go looking and I'm glad I did. I may have to do that myself next week when I'm there.
