Detroit's biggest issue is/was that it has had rampant corruption with it's elected officials for almost 40 years (since Coleman Young). We aren't just talking small issues here, we're talking blatant stealing of hundreds of millions of dollars, in addition to many other illegal activities. The sad thing is that most of those guys would be re-elected in a heartbeat, if they weren't rotting in a prison cell or dead. Also those saying Detroit's issues are related to the auto industry are only partially right. Only GM is actually located in Detroit the rest are located elsewhere. During the "white flight" years most corporations and residents moved to the many suburbs of Detroit (which the majority are still thriving municipalities that are quite nice areas). That left Detroit's tax base severely depleted, which has been shrinking ever since. Hell only something like 1 in 4 property owners actually paid their property taxes last year.

For those who only know what they've heard from the media, it should be noted that all the blight, financial, and crime issues that you hear about are, for the most part, isolated to the City of Detroit proper, not the surrounding suburbs. Quite frankly Detroit's current problems have more to do with the above than anything related to the economic downturn, and trying to draw parallels to AC and especially Vegas is pretty ludicrous.
