AC 9th most unfriendly city in the world?

According to a Conde Naste survey of 46 ,000 readers. A big shout out to Newark ,they finished first ahead of Islamabad Pakistan and Oakland .
I guess these people have never been to a pro sports event in Philly,they obviously dont know what true hostility is.

 

I tend to be skeptical of these surveys, if only because what constitutes "friendly" is so subjective. I'm a native New Yorker, so my perspective may be skewed, but I remember being down South and asking for directions, and the responses were incredibly nice but amounted to 10 minutes of, "I think you can just follow the signs". I'd rather just be told, "I don't know", and be able to get on with my life and/or ask someone else.

Whereas New Yorkers get a bad rap, but I recall seeing a survey that we were actually incredibly helpful when it comes to directions; if we don't know, we'll just say so (which some places consider "unfriendly", but I consider polite), while if we do, we'll explain in depth and be happy to do so.

 

you're from NY, therefore your opinion of friendly is disregarded.

yes, in the South people will talk to you for 10 minutes to say something that could be done in one sentence and I prefer more efficient communication as well, but there's no doubt that taking 10 minutes out of your day for a complete stranger is much more friendly than a 2 second response and back to your business.

 

Like I said, "friendly" is totally relative. Depends on what that 2-second response is; if someone doesn't know the answer to what I asked, then I'd rather they just tell me as opposed to pretending that they do! I consider the latter to be decidedly unfriendly, but then again, I'm a New Yorker.

 

I live in the country outside of Albany NY. It is not like NYC.
I used to think that AC was arrogantly unfriendly, but my last trip there I was actually amazed at how friendly folks were.
I particularly liked sitting down at the beach and watching all ages, races, sorts of people swimming and playing and finding everyone easy to be with. I was solo. I was quiet for me, but folks talked to me. One young woman left her jewelry and things with me as she was solo and wanted to go in swimming and not worry about her things.
I thought at the time that all the troubles had changed attitudes.
Something was different from years back when I went.

Police were very friendly. Making eye contact meant getting a greeting just as I might in a small town.

Now if only the VP pay tables would improve as much as the attitude of strangers. And I'm sorry that all over CET has really damaged the poker rooms.

I didn't play live poker during my short trip last year, but I played several 9/6 JOB macines (I prefer the lower variance) at CET properties. I liked walking the Boardwalk but preferred the casinos in the Marina District. Revel was dead when I was there as well - very nice casino but nothing to play in it.

JG, this goes both ways, I would not think of wearing an Eagle's jersey at the Meadowlands. I dont own one anyway! And when the Mets Phillies rivalry was at its peak about four years ago after a few NL East titles for Philly, young Mets fans visiting Philly were often loud, obnoxious and looking to pick a fight.

I would think nothing less of the pinkies up target demographic that Conde Nast nurtures, scenes of poverty make folk a bit squeamish in their S class sedans.

Just what I read and different people tell me. There was that one incident after a hockey playoff game where a NJ cop was beat up wearing his Rangers jersey in line for a cheese steak. I tend to stay on my side of the Delaware most of the time . I'm still amazed about that Newark being the most unfriendly city in the world,if I took them to Camden,they'ed wish they were in Newark.
