will I be noticed if I play table minimums in the high limit room? ($100 per hand at blackjack at the belagio, MGM Grand, Aria, etc on a slow night)

I wont do it for very long, I am just curious as I have never played in the high limit room before and I want to try it. if I walk up and play for 15 minutes will anyone even raise an eyebrow at my $100 bets? what if I bet $500?

no but they will be glad to take your money.

it bet 500 a hand and up at belligio in the high limit room , there really nice in there . you get your own bathroom and bar, just a higher end of service.

now buy in for 5 or 10 grand and they will notice you.

ps if you do 100 or up a hand do it at luxor or excaliber you will make a better impresion

You will be noticed just as much as someone at a 5 or $10 table who bets the minimum, meaning no one will care one way or another.

Do you want to be noticed or not?

i'm sure the guys in there playing bj at $5,000 a hand will really appreciate you hopping around from table to table for 5, 6 hands until you find a rhythm...

when they say high limit at these places they usually arent messing around, they mean it.

You would be noticed more in a downstream property playing $100 per hand. I would do that and work my way up.

its like saying you want to take up running then starting with the boston marathon.

It depends on the property and it also depends on the day.

If you play high limit at the Monte Carlo, for example, you're likely to be alone in the room, and you'll get the attention of the dealer and the pit boss, who will both stand there with you. And if you want a drink, they'll get on the phone and call for a waitress.

what I want to do is table hop and spread possibly $100-$500, playing 1-10 hands per table and then moving on.

will I get the evil eye if I do that?

Well you can't even do that at anywhere but the higher end places, because at the lower tier properties there's usually only one or two tables open.

You won't get the evil eye from the casino, but you might from the other players, if you're messing with a shoe they're in for $5000 a hand. And they might just have their table limit raised to $1000 to shut you out.

What do you mean by noticed? Do you mean will you get rated? Then of course you will if you want to be. If you mean will they notice in terms of watching your action and thinking you're a baller then of course not. Especially not at places like Aria, Bellagio, or MGM and probably not anywhere. I just came back from 4 days at Aria and was surprised to not personally see much of any high limit action. I played in the high limit room a few times and figured my action would be the smallest there but most was the same black chip play. Some purple but only once saw anyone betting small stacks of yellow. The only big action I saw at Aria all weekend was one guy on a $15 craps table betting stacks of flags ($5000 chips) all over the table. He had at least 50k on per roll if not much more and he was losing his ass. I'm sure there was a lot of other genuine big play that I didn't see, but was just surprised by how much action in the Carta Privada was only black chip. They usually had $100 min tables in there and on busy times the lowest was $300. At Bellagio on the main floor in the quasi-high limit area outside Club Prive and near the cashier where the tables are usually $100+ the guy on the table next to mine was playing a few flags per hand - probably averaged around 10k-15k. But other than that it was mostly black. Inside Club Prive there were only a couple of people playing, one table was reserved, and the others had $500 min but were all empty.

The high limit rooms definitely have nicer service but that doesn't necessarily equate to more fun. I played mostly at $100 tables both in Carta Privada and on the main floor and the vibe was either average or below average every time (e.g. players seeming bored or depressed or too serious). The couple times I played unrated at a lower limit table just for a change of pace I actually had better tables with people that were just having fun.

Edited to add: agree with others that it is definitely an a-hole type move to jump in for a few hands at a table where someone is playing big without first asking them. I usually like playing at tables that have 1 or 2 others and will always ask them if they want to play alone, have me sit out and wait until they need things to change, etc. Especially if someone is on a hot streak - do not screw with them, karma will slap you in the face.

I am not used to seeing whales play, when I was at the palazzo I saw a guy betting 1k on each spin of the roulette wheel and I thought that was impressive, but other than that I have never really seen whales play, I guess I have seen someone bet 1k at baccarat also, but I dont think that is whale material.

I am only interested in Double deck BJ, and there is no mid shoe entry so I would only enter at the start of shoes, is that still a jackass move? I think its rude to enter mid shoe if someone is on a streak and you take his good cards. (but I welcome people to enter if its a bad shoe)

Are you trying to back-count the shoes? If so, the high-limit is the last place you should be doing that. Yes, they will notice. And on the 2-deck games it's most likely they won't let you play mid-deck entry anyway.

If you're not back-counting, exactly what are you trying to accomplish?

On top of the potential “etiquette” problem (and “heat” problem), there is a very practical problem:

If it is slow, you probably won’t find more than one DD game open.

If it is busy, you probably won’t find a DD game that is less than $300-500 minimums. You might find one $100 table…but certainly not more than that on a busy night.

I played mostly double deck the entire time and I don't remember there being no mid-shoe entry. There weren't any signs saying so and I can't remember if I ever tried buying in mid-shoe or if someone else tried at my table. Its not even about whale play though, that is few and far between. Not even about high-roller play which is much more common but $100 or even $500 play doesn't really qualify as high-roller. Its just that these tables are never really crowded, its not like a $10 or even $25 table where you might have a hard time getting a seat. So to just jump in for a few hands even on a $100 table while someone is playing heads-up with the dealer is just rude to do without simply asking the guy if he minds. If he's on a roll he may just ask for you to wait for the shuffle. On a double deck game that happens quickly anyway.

But just my advice - if you're not comfortable with the idea of losing thousands in these short little sessions its not at all worth it for the "experience" of the high limit room. Unless you're playing in there a lot you're not really benefiting from the experience. I actually didn't like Carta Privada all that much because with the bar and lounge element in there it was often busy with people who were just hanging out and ordering drinks like any lounge.

Not really sure what info or insight you are looking for with the OP. But a few thoughts:

First, $1000 a hand is not a whale. While that is big money to me and you, you probably have not seen a whale, nor will. Those guys usually get their own private room. There are exceptions (Nate at roulette on his current trip; and I'm not certain Nate even considers himself a whale), but those are exceptions. If you are wanting to see whales, you are not likely to see them at the $100 tables anywhere.

Second, it depends on what you mean by getting noticed. If you're wanting to get rated, everywhere will rate you at a hundred dollar a hand. If you are wanting to get noticed by a host, I agree you should start further down the stream (Luxor, Monte Carlo, etc.). A hundred bucks a hand is nothing in the high limit rooms at Bellagio and Aria.

Finally, Bellagio high limit is not the ideal place to table hop (nor is Aria). Bellagio has two high limit areas, each with only a couple BJ tables (and with different numbers of decks). Aria only has one high limit BJ area and it also has a limited number of tables. If you want to table hop at those places, forget the high limit room and do it on the main floor. On a busy night on the main floors, there are more tables running, good rules (at least there were a couple years ago when I played more BJ) and a hundred dollars a hand is not unusual on the main floor of those casinos.

The high limit areas of Bellagio and Aria are more geared toward baccarat, IMO. And to get noticed in there (meaning to garner attention and not just be rated), I think you have to start playing multiple yellow chips, if not a flag chip each hand. During the day, I have played in those rooms and betting purple and yellow chips definitely gets some attention. At night, that usually doesn't cut it, as there are a lot more players betting larger than me.

As for the evil eye from other players, who cares? It's your money, play how you want

I agree. I have never liked the lighting in there. Plus, the bartender at the Bellagio Carta Privada acted like a stuck up jerk on my last trip when I walked in there and ordered drinks. His attitude was that I didn't belong in there.

back counting is stupid, I hate it when I am playing and someone is back counting, its super obvious and I think its a hell of a lot ruder to back count and then jump into a game than it is to just table hop. I dont back count and I dislike people who do. (its a pet peeve I have)

Im not worried about heat, I am not going to be spreading huge or back counting, I am simply going to be playing a spread for a short time, just for the experience of playing in the high stakes room, (my mom played VP at the high stakes slot room at the bellagio and she wont stop talking about how awesome it is to play in a high stakes room and the difference in feel, so I want to try it)

thats what my friends have been telling me, and that I should not be willing to play at black chip level until I have the bankroll to support myself so that if I have a bad luck session it wont hurt me long term, I guess I just want to try for the experience, I ran some sims on CVCX and I feel like if I play for a hour the most I will lose is 3k if I stick to the table min (95 certainty) that would suck but it wouldnt kill me, I want to try it for the experience. I remember betting a yellow at the craps table at ceasars one time, just for the experience. I guess its the same kind of thing (but BJ has 1/7 the house edge)

your right, ive never seen a true whale, I think it would be interesting to see, but they all play behind closed doors and for good reason

ive never had a host, I dont think my play is high enough to qualify me for a host, the last time I was at Aria I was playing craps and I was making $25 pass line bets (max odds) and $30 on 6 and 8 place bets, even if I up my average bet to $150 I dont think that will get me a host, and what would a host do for me?

Ive never had the balls to bet a flag chip, I feel like that would be stupid considering that it would be too much risk for me to be willing to accept.

I think you have some very valid points and I will stick to the main floor! I learned a lot today from this forum (Im impressed to see how active it is)

    Thanks for the feedback!

If you play black chip in the HL room at NYNY or MC, they'll ask you if you have a host, and offer to get you one if you don't.

Not sure if I am thinking the same place, but there is small high limit room just before the room elevators.

We have gone in their to drink a few times. We have noticed many people come in, and the bartender shows them the price list, and they leave. I think they get lots of folks thinking they can stop in there for a free drink and are quickly educated.

I've never seen on either. Heard plenty of stories, though.

Actually, playing $100 per hand at lower tier properties probably would get you a host (but maybe not if you are hitting and running). Years ago, I got my first host at Monte Carlo when I was betting black chips at BJ in their high limit area. That was the first and last time I bet that large (at least until I started playing consistently larger two years ago), so I never took advantage of her services, but she was very polite, would call me on my brithday and offer to set things up for me at MC if I ever wanted a return trip. Never hurts to have a host. If they are good, they can help you cut through some of the bullshit
