Can I use your cellphone?

During my first trip to Vegas, I was approached by a woman who asked to use my cellphone.

I was playing slots at Excalibur around 11:00 a.m. on a weekday. She sat down next to me and starting up a conversation, which was no problem. I enjoy visiting with fellow players as it slows down my play. She was about my age, late 40s, and was fun to talk to. Suddenly, she asks to use my cellphone as the battery in hers was dead or something. Letting any stranger use your cellphone seemed like a bad idea. I declined and moved on a short while later.

I feel I did the right thing and would do so again. What are your thoughts?

 

I think you did the right thing. Oddly enough, this same thing happened to me yesterday while I was waiting for a flight at my gate at O'Hare. I said no.

 

I think you did the right thing. I mean, in an emergency - OK maybe. But it's doubtful that was an emergency.

 

Some of us dont have cellphones, I was delayed leaving vegas a couple trips ago and debated asking someone to use there's to call my pickup, I didn't and ended up using my credit card to make the call at one of the airport kiosks, ended up costing me about $8 to make a 3 min call.

 

Years ago (before I had a cellphone )
I was returning from Vegas + got stuck at my airport
waiting for my Town car pickup.
Nobody in sight for an hour.
I asked a lady walking by if I could use her phone --
I explained my predicament......she let me.
I thanked her MANY times !
My driver forgot all about me - he was sitting at his
kitchen table = more than 90 mins. away.
I took a cab to the train station + trained it home.
NEVER USED THAT DRIVER, AGAIN !

 

$9 per month on Virgin Mobile. No contracts. Cheap Samsung flip phone included in some plans.

Don't like the entire idea of Cell Phones but eventually you have to break down and get one. 18 cents a minute for calls and whatever you don't use of the $9 per month, rolls over. My current credit is well over $200.

I don't carry it with me except in Vegas if I'm expecting a meet-up. Otherwise it just sits in the car turned off.

 

I've had people lend me cell phones many times. But I've always been in uniform, coming back from overseas. Because you're there for a year and you don't have a phone, at least not one that works in the US. So when you hit ground on the east coast you usually want to call someone and tell them you're there and what time to meet you.

But in your case, I don't think I'd lend mine in a casino to someone who chose to sit down next to me. If I had chosen to sit next to that person randomly, I'd be much more likely to lend my phone.

 

My answer would be, "sorry, no".

For me, it's a security and hygiene breach.

 

May ask well ask to borrow a stranger's toothbrush. It's pressed up against their ear, face, and mouth. No thanks.

 

Hell to the No! I have a prepaid phone. It's for calling 911, AAA or ordering dinner on the way home. I ask the people who call me on it the most to give me gift cards for Xmas so they pay for the minutes I have to waste taking calls on it from them. There is no way I would lend it to someone in the casino. Outside of the casino and in the real world, I would help someone in a genuine emergency. But there are too many folks asking stuff from you in the casino who are up to no good.

 

Wow, am I the only one who feels it's a dick move to not let someone borrow a phone? I mean come on, its a stupid phone! The worse that can happen is they run off with it, which you can chase them down kick their ass and take it back, or just get a new one.

 

When its your 600 dollar iPhone 5 with your contacts, info and billing stuff, it's more than a stupid phone. It is YOUR LIFE! Jokes aside, I wouldn't loan my phone out. No telling who they might call and you now have willingly given some potential creeper your phone number who can harass you for ages.

 

Because I have needed to use other people's phones in emergency situations either before I had a cell phone or when my phone was dying with no charger, I surely would lend out my phone given the person looks normal and genuine. There are no normal quarter payphones anymore, which sucks.

But then again, I normally get my phones free or super cheap. I do not care much for electronics...

 

We were at one of the bars at Planet Hollywood playing VP and my wife's phone was on the bar. Two ladies come to the bar a few seats down having a great time and one needs to call her husband to tell where she is. The bar is rectangular so we can both see them. Anyway, they seem ok and having a great time (deep into the cups) and ask if they can use my wife's phone. She does not want to but agrees. Anyway as the lady is calling the guy (husband I guess) walks up so she hangs up and hand the phone back, which he sees.

At least 12 times that night and probably 4o times over the next three weeks this guy calls back. Of course my wife never answers but he keeps leaving messages. Never bad only returning her call.

Moral of this story...... no e......f...ing way.

 

I was walking one morning by the Venetian and some random guy asked if he could use my cell phone and of course I said "Hell No!" If they needed a phone they could find one in any of the casinos.

There aren't many payphones around but if you really needed one you can find one. No reason to ask random people for their cell phones.

 

Guess that's a little different than my $50 iPhone 4 that has bejeweled on it.

I remember this one time in Vegas a guy came up to me and my buddies and asked if he could borrow a phone cause he lost his friend and his phone in some club. We let him make a call and it went right to voice mail, we told him to call his friend back and leave a voice mail with our number to get a hold of him. This guy was pretty cool so we walk the strip with him and continue our drinking.

An hour goes by and his friend calls him back on our phone and says they're back at the hotel. He invites us back saying his friends are having a little party in their room. We walk to the Signature and party with this guy for a little bit. As we were leaving he gives us a full bottle of Jagger and $20 for a cab ride home and says thanks for being so generous.

They're are still good people out there, don't assume everyone is a scammer.

No, you are not the only one. I have had to ask to borrow people before to use their phone either my phone was dead and I had not charger or there was no payphone nearby. I was very glad during those rare instances that people allowed me to use it, and I greatly appreciated their willingness.

But, I guess everyone has their reasons.

I was on a train and this man asked a woman to use her phone. She said, 'No,' and moved to another seat after a few minutes.

He then asked me. I told him, 'sure,' and handed him my IPhone. He said that he didn't know how to use it and asked me to dial the number. I did and handed him the phone. He simply wanted the phone to tell his brother what train he was on so his brother could meet him at the train station.

It was so harmless and innocent.
