Will be attending a two-day seminar that's hosted at the Gold Coast. Never thought of staying there, but for the sake of not having to wake up an hour early to factor in driving, is it a decent place to stay? Or should I just stay at the Rio?

we have stayed at the gold coast twice and other than an employee walking into our room last trip thinking it was empty we have no complaints.

the room has a stand up shower only but no tub and there is no in room safe.

as far as the bed it was very comfy and the room was clean.

I stayed at GC a week ago (among other places) and was pleasantly surprised just how nice the room was. (I had stayed there before, but don't remember it being anywhere as nice. Don't know if it was the PREMIUM room I had or if they remodeling everything, but it was definitely well decorated, clean, and comfy. I'm looking forward to staying there again (among other places) next month.

Ask nicely for a renovated room. I was upgraded for free, even on a busy convention weekend. They're worth it if you have to pay a little extra... August was my first stay and extremely happy for the price, location, comfort and convenience.

yeah what sam and everyone else said.

I stayed in a premium room and the value is very high! It was a surprise to me too back in May. I would gladly make it a permanent home casino of mine.

In re to your choice Gold Coast or RIO...try something
new and go for the Gold Coast. I'd insist on the new Premium room.
The rooms are half the size of the RIO, yet real comfy, the place is
a snap to navigate and the gaming is quite a bit better than RIO.
The Cortez Room is real good for dinner.
PALMS and RIO close if you feel the need, shuttle to the Strip...
I've used it for weekends when the rates at other properties are just
too expensive. It's always consistant and comfy.

I've never actually stayed there, so I cannot comment on the hotel aspect of Gold Coast. But a few things to add to the conversation...

    * This particular property charges a mandatory nightly "resort fee." I don't like resort fees at all, but, sadly, these days roughly half or so of all Vegas hotels charge them.

Fortunately, according to http://www.vegas.com/incl/resortfees.html the fee here is "only" $3.00/night (much less than some other properties). According to this website, the following is included in your three bucks per night: "Use of fitness center, In-room coffee, Unlimited local and 800 calls, Shuttle to the Strip and The Orleans."

    * You didn't mention at all if you are going to gamble at the Gold Coast in your post. If the answer is "no," then stop reading my reply now.

If you do plan on gambling, some things to consider:

    - The property no longer has a poker room. You'll have to go next door to The Rio or across the street to The Palms to play poker.
    - You may consider getting the American Casino Guide (www.americancasinoguide.com) book which contains coupons. Of interest at this property is a $5 matchplay coupon and also a "earn 200 points, get a free buffet" coupon. I use both once a year here. Note that 200 points = $200 "coin-in" on slots or VP. This doesn't mean you necessarily lose $200 to get the buffet-- it's gambling, after all. You could lose $200, you could win $200, you could win $2 million... it's $200 of "action."
    - The property does have full pay video poker. Check out www.vpfree2.com for locations of machines.
    - Also, their slot club card "Bconnected" links to other casinos, so you can earn points both at the Gold Coast and also at the following other Vegas-area properties: Main Street Station, The California, The Fremont, The Orleans, and Sam's Town.
    - It also has bowling. And a Chinese restaurant I keep meaning to go to (I hear good things).
    - Never personally had a bad customer service experience there in the casino or buffet.

    Hope this helps.

did your room have the glass shower with no door sam?
I think the premium room has that new shower and the little window that opens is awesome!

the casino also serves frozen drinks when gambling.

I'm seriously prejudiced toward the Rio as far as quality and size of rooms/suites. My only stay at GC was fairly claustrophobic (but it was a comped room on a weekend). Assume you're not going during swim season, so the Rio's vastly superior pool area is not a factor.

Having said that, GC is possibly the friendliest, brightest casino floor I've experienced.

But I'll take the Rio suite every time -- while gambling at the GC and eating/mingling at the Palms across the street.

What they did with those bathrooms is quite clever. They took the exact same set-up that exists at Bill's, Plaza and Vegas Club south tower, and made it more spacious by removing the tub and division between shower and sink area. Then they added a sliding external door to the whole area that makes it a separate room altogether while adding an Asian feel to the room. Much like Golden Nugget's Rush Tower did with their sliding door panels. Quite genius in it's simplicity. Plaza missed the boat on that one when they renovated, as one of their biggest current complaints is the bathrooms. It's a major design faux pas to have a direct line of sight between the hallway door and the toilet.

    Close to PALMS and RIO

Gold Coast has a free shuttle that takes you to Orleans and Bills Gambling Hall on the Strip.

Don't like that? Ok, walk across the street and take the PALMS Free Shuttle to Caesars.

Don't like that? Ok, walk across the street and take the RIO Free Shuttle to Harrah's and Bally's.

Gold Coast is bright. Ask for a room on the 8th floor or so.

Expect to see Grandparents and locals.

I've stayed at both. The Coast is a nice property, the Rio room will be a suite. The Rio has been cheeper lately. Both are fine.

I can't stay in a casino I wouldn't play in, or at least I'd get a few rolls in during lunch. It seems pretty convenient & reviews I saw on TA weren't bad. Our budget allows for the upgrade, so that's not an issue.

The buffet isn't elaborate, but much better than what you're paying for. Full breakfast with coffee and juice for less than the price of McDonald's? I was more than happy. Also enjoyed the noodle place, and hear that Ping Pang Pong chinese is outstanding.
