Antivirus

Since this seems to be the place for this question..

Just wondering what type antivirus most peeps here use..I have been using nod32 and think it's one of the best as it catches most wild things out there,I started this post because I just cleaned a friends pc and it was full of trojans and she was using free version of AVG.

Micosoft essentials is my Antivirus.

 

Kaspersky. Used it for 3 years on every computer in the house except the Apples. Hands down the best. I buy it when its on sale . Usually boxing day, and i already have next years in the boxes.

 

Is it a resource hog though??

I dont run any anti virus, never have on any computer I've owned, never had a problem either.

 

I use Avast free version.

I like it because it catches viruses and spyware. Most only protect against viruses.

A resourse hog ? You mean it slows down the computer by checking everything you do or uses a lot of space? I use it because it was recommended by a techie at Staples,but I dont game or look at porn or really get into heavy surfing.

 

AGV Anti-Virus FREE Edition .......never had a problem yet, and this old dinosaur is OLD...it even has a crank on the side that I have to use to wind it up....LOL

 

I use McAfee because I get it free through work.....

 

As an IT professional I'm always aghast every time I hear some "proud" individual boast about this. If you run a non-Microsoft OS then I totally understand and you may indeed just be fine, but for anyone else this is just crazy. There have been many tests done and an unprotected WIntel computer on the open internet lasts something like seconds (minutes at most) to get infected with something. In all likelihood you've had compromises in your systems that you don't even know about.

Please, to any novice reading this thread: Don't take that post as confirmation that it’s OK to run without AV protection.

As for which one to use I'm not sure. I've not found any that I love. Some are better than others, some will detect more but might be a resource hog, some might have better email or heuristic detection, but nobody has wowed me. The only one I stay far far away from is MacAfee. I have been brought lots of machines running MacAfee that got infected. I've also found it to be particularly buggy in terms of stability and install/uninstall reliability in the past. I personally use Symantec corporate edition because I get it free from work. I think its superior and less of a resource hog than its consumer/Norton version. I don't think it’s as thorough in terms of auxiliary protection so for users who need extra..ummmmm, savingfromthemselves might need something with better browser, firewall, data protection.

 

Yeah, I was at a presentation on data security last week and the rep from our security office even said he didn't like McAfee. C'est la vie. I had norton for years, I'm immune to crappy antivirus software:evillaugh

I've been using Kapersky and sometimes AVG. I feel they run great and don't slow down your computer, especially if you program them to update overnight. I was a faithful user of Norton but I felt that it bogged down my system. Here's another question: How many people still use Systemworks or something similar? I used to but once I stopped I can't say I miss it.

 

I used to use a more full featured solution like system works, but they are REALLY resource hogs. With the vulnerability improvement over the years combined with hardware firewalls, windows firewall and some of the native malware detection/prevention I've been more and more comfortable with a basic Anti-Virus as long as it has full email scanning and spyware/adware detection. The current Symantec Endpoint Protection with network threat detection is enough for me now adays. But like I said, I find it more stable/reliable than its consumer/Norton cousins. I think if I didn't have access to that I'd use something like Trend Micro maybe.

 

IT professionals have to say that, it's job security.

I'm just telling you my experience, I've had 3 computers the last 12 years(trade up after about 5 years), have never used any anti virus, I delete anything that comes with the computer, never had a problem. I have occcasionally run some free scan and never get anything found. In my opinion the whole industry is a scam, I know you will strongly disagree, so lets leave it at that.

I also think these Anti-Virus company are the very ones sending out the VIRUSES.
