Hello from WI

Hi all.
I've been lurking on here for a few weeks and just thought I'd say hi.
My wife and I are going to LV in early November. Neither of us have ever been there and don't quite know what to expect, but we're definitely excited.

I'll continue to lurk and ask questions, thanks for letting me learn from all of you!

If you would have said "We've been there two or three times and we are looking for ......" I would certainly chime in with ideas.

But the first time? Just go, experience it, and start a list of what you want to do the second time.

Because the first time, you may say "I want to see the Mirage Volcano and the TI Sirens show", to find out they are at the same time and while standing at the TI, you find out at the last minute that the show is cancelled due to high winds. Then, not only do you feel like you wasted time, you left so much doin's on the table.

So the best thing to do is pick a hotel to your standards, and experience what gives you enjoyment.

 

Welcome to the boards! The 1st trip is soooo exciting and it is typical to over-plan. Just pick out a hotel and area that suits what your expectations might be and go with the flow. Pencil in some things but be flexible - you may plan to go a certain place / at a certain time and you end up being in another area and it just doesn't happen - so you "punt"... Scour the board for ideas and enjoy. Hope you have a great time...you will probably begin planning your 2nd trip when you get home... like the rest of us Vegas crazies.

Vegas has always been somewhere we've wanted to go, but in our travels, we've just never ended up there. Needless to say, this trip is long overdue.
Here are a few more details about our upcoming adventure.
We're traveling with another couple, and we will be meeting up with a few more friends/relatives while we're there.
Because of the number of people that will be staying with us during our trip, we ended up booking a room at the Jockey Club...
I know it's not the fanciest place, but we were attracted to the location and its proximity to a casino. (We're under the impression it's easy'ish to get to the Cosmo casino from our hotel, but we certainly could be wrong)
We don't plan on spending a lot of time in our room and wanted to be somewhat centrally located so we can explore as much of the area by foot as we can.
None of us are experienced gamblers, nor high rollers, but we plan on sitting down at the tables and machines to learn a little and have a lot of fun.
Otherwise, we're just going to roll with it and take things as they come.
We can't wait!

Average low is 43

The high might get into the 80s if you are lucky, but the nights will definitely get into the 40s. it is the desert after all.

Take a light jacket at least. No matter what, the casinos will still be running the AC.

Even though a casino looks "this close" in reality it will be about one mile away. A vegas block = one mile. Take comfortable walking shoes.

Don't try to gamble the first time there. Walk around and see stuff.

 

Ok, you talked me into giving you a tip

If you are inexperienced gamblers, try to do your gambling (especially table games) in the morning. When the casinos are less crowded, the table minimums are lower and dealers are often more able to explain the game and offer advice than they would if the casino is packed and the tables are full.

Allow me to also include that (A) Cosmo is famous for having an empty casino and ridiculously high table minimums, and (B) if you are test driving blackjack, be aware that most lower limit blackjack games pay $6 for blackjack instead of $7.50 (on a $5 bet) on the Strip (though do note that many downtown and off-strip casinos pay the proper rate if you happen to be away from center-Strip).

This short pay is the bane of true blackjack players (and some people are militaristic that you should avoid 6:5 blackjack tables at all costs), but if you are there for entertainment and only putting up about $40, then any low limit table should give you plenty of fun.

So far I've learned almost enough to make my head explode.
We're so excited to go. So many of the things I've read make Vegas sound like a different planet, let alone a different city.

Your name gave me a flashback to the old Red Owl food store chain that used to be in the Midwest.

 

And that's exactly where it came from!
My grandpa was a butcher at a RedOwl grocery store and eventually bought a franchise in the UP and then northern WI. My earliest 'gaming' memories are learning to play cribbage & euchre in the back room after they closed up for the night.

 

Still a few places to find a cribbage game around here, but almost no one plays sheepshead anymore.

Anyway, welcome to the board. You'll find answers to almost any question here.

 

Hi Redowl and Welcome!!!

Casino's will offer FREE gaming lessons on craps, black jack, etc. They will be posted in the casino's what time, and definitely take a FREE lesson if you can. They will show you the proper hand signals etc. when playing at the tables.

I've heard downtown is friendlier than the strip when it comes to table games, but I honestly can't say for certain. At least, until I get to Vegas which will be Monday. LOL It has been 8 years since we have been to Vegas, so Vegas is going to be new for my husband and I as well.

In my opinion, a MUST SEE show that is FREE is BIG ELVIS who is playing at Harrah's. Please go see it. Everyone in your party will have a blast.
