Table Games employees at the craps tables?

i just learned to play craps on my last trip to vegas in april ...so tell me
1. why do they change the employees so often ? seems like every 1/2 hour or so
2. what does the guy sitting down (pit boss?) do ? seems like he watches everyones moves

There is a great scene in "Casino" where
you hear a voice over by DeNiro....it goes something like this -
"the stickman watches the dice...the boxman watches
the stickman...the pitboss watches the boxman...the shift manager
watches the pitboss...the floor supervisor watches the shift manager
and the Eye in The Sky watches everyone."

 

Every 20 minutes ... the stickman and dealers rotate positions, with one guy leaving for break, and a new guy coming off break. I believe the four dealers assigned to that table rotate like this:

• Dealer position A -- 20 minutes
• Stickman -- 20 minutes
• Dealer position B -- 20 minutes
• BREAK -- 20 minutes
• repeat...

The dealer positions can be very intense at a busy table, so they need the frequent rotations to keep them fresh.

The seated guy (Boxman) is the table supervisor. He watches over each end to ensure correct payouts and proper protocol. He is usually a large grumpy dude.

 

And he protects the chips.

 

Frequent rotation is thought to prevent collusion between dealers and players. Some casinos make a dealer start off with a long stint and then send him on break. Well, sensible casinos keep their dealers alert.

The occurence of a major error can get an entire crew fired, even the guy who was on break at the time so that is why everyone watches everyone else.

Dealers a/k/a Base Dealers watch their end. Dealers make payouts in a prescribed order using prescribed hands so as to never block the Box's view of what they are doing.

The Stick handles the prop bets but the Dealer usually already has the proper payout ready. The Box handles the Hop Bets and watches everyone and everything from the shooter's empty hand to how the dice land. As the stickman leaves on break he shows clean hands to the Box. No one gets fouled up in the rotation and dealers always get back from break a minute early. No casino wants dealers and customers getting too long a session together.

The M Resort keeps Dealers on a certain rotation for a calendar month but most casinos are that fixed in their routines and many dealers are on 'The Temp Board' anyway where they have no guarantees of anything.

 

This is what I figure. If there is any type of collusion the frequent changing should minimalism any potential loss.

 

close, but the shift manager is the #1 man on the floor at any given time unless there happens to be a V/P around. it goes supervisor, pit manager, shift manager. if you want to get something done, the shift manager is the one to talk to.
