Green Valley Ranch / Red Rock - (5/12/10 - 5/20/10)

Brenda and I returned from 8 days/nights in Las Vegas on May 21st, staying at the Green Valley Ranch Resort & Spa the first four days/nights (5/12 - 5/16) before heading to the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa the next four days/nights (5/16 - 5/20). This was our 20th trip to Vegas over the past 8 years, our 7th time staying at Green Valley Ranch and our 9th time staying at Red Rock. You can check out their websites at:

After returning from our previous trip to Las Vegas in October, 2009, I sent an e-mail to a host at Green Valley Ranch letting her know we're thinking about returning to GVR in May, 2010. I gave her details of our past gambling habits and told her I'd be in contact around March 1, 2010 when we begin to plan our first 2010 Vegas Trip. We hadn't been back to GVR since December, 2006. After I contacted this host in early March, 2010, she offered to comp 2 nights up front and a casino rate of $120+tax for nights 3 and 4. In the meantime, we received offers in the mail from casino marketing and had our reservation updated so that the first 3 nights would be comped up front with a casino rate of $120+tax for the last night. I also contacted our host at Red Rock and she offered to comp the first 2 nights up front and a casino rate of $80+tax for nights 3 and 4. We also received offers in the mail from casino marketing for Red Rock and got our rate improved to $59+tax for nights 3 and 4. I also booked a stretch limo (Presidential Limousine) for the ride from Green Valley Ranch to Red Rock on 5/16.

For those of you not familiar with our gambling habits, since I've given up playing blackjack, we pretty much stick to playing full pay deuces wild video poker. We play quarter machines, max coins (5) and here's the pay schedule:

As you can see, a Natural Royal Flush pays 4,000 coins ($1,000) and Four Deuces pays 1,000 coins ($250), and a Wild Royal Flush pays 125 coins ($31.25).

As I've said in the past, although I try to be as accurate as possible in these trip reports, there are some things better left in Vegas. I'll leave it at that. Our primary mission is to "Beat the Casino".

Day 1 (Wednesday, 5/12)

For this trip, we stayed at a hotel near the airport the night before the trip. On the morning of this trip, we're up at 5:30am and enjoy a nice breakfast at the hotel before the shuttle takes us to the Austin-Bergstrom airport about 6:30am. We arrived at the airport 5 minutes later and checked our luggage at curbside. We then made our way through security and then headed for our gate.

Our nonstop flight was fine taking off at 8:00am, arriving in Las Vegas around 8:50am. We head down to grab our luggage and wait for the GVR shuttle at 9:30am. We arrive at GVR, I tip the driver, left our luggage with the bell desk and headed to the front desk to see if they have a room ready for us. It's too early to check in but we get all the paperwork out of the way. They'll call my cell phone when our room is ready. We walk to Whole Foods (1/3 mile away) and pick up some wine for the room.

By 11am, we're both sitting side by side at a couple video poker machines. We play the "optimum" video poker machines. With these machines, for every $4 cycled through, you get 1 point added to your account. Okay, where's the drink lady? 35 minutes later, a drink lady shows up. I started with a Corona Light with lime while Wifey had a Miller Light with a glass. Today, we had a couple salads from Tropical Smoothie Cafe and eat at our machines. Later for dinner, we'll split a turkey sandwich from Capriotti's sandwich shop.

Today is Wednesday and every Wednesday is "Senior 50 Plus Wednesday" at Station Casinos. For all the "under 50s" out there, see what you have to look forward to. On these special Wednesdays, there's 5X points all day on Slots, Video Poker, and Bingo, ½ points dining at all restaurants 6am-6pm, as well as monthly specials. During the month of May, for us '50 plus seniors", there's a drawing every Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. For every 10 points earned (while gambling), you have 1 entry in the drawing. You have to "activate" your earned entries between 2pm and 3:45pm on the day of the drawing. There are four or five cash prizes ranging from $250 to $1000.

At 2:15pm, Hubby (yeah, that's me) hits his first 'four deuces' of the trip. Yippee!

At 4pm, there's the drawing but we didn't win anything. Wifey played until 6:20pm and I played on until 9pm.

Day 2 (Thursday, 5/13):

We're up at 2:43am. I left $5 on the pillow and asked housekeeping if she could please leave extra towels, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and shower gel which she did after making up the room. I did this every morning on this trip at Green Valley Ranch. We're out the door by 3:09am. We headed to the machines and we're playing our video poker by 3:15am. Today is a 3X points day which means for every $4 in, we get 3 points rather than 1 point.

At 5:36am, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

We stopped playing at 6am and head over to the Pancake House for breakfast. By 6:30am, we're back playing side by side at our machines.

Yesterday, I played a different machine from today and about midday, a weird thing happened. We only play 'Deuces Wild' and as I'm playing and apparently just finished a hand, suddenly a 'double down' screen pops up. What the heck??? I'm not playing blackjack, this is deuces wild. There is no such thing as doubling down on deuces wild. When the 'double down' screen popped up, it showed I won 10 coins (quarters) and was doubling down for a chance to win 20 coins instead. On this 'double down' screen, it shows the first of 5 cards with the next 4 cards turned over. That first card is the dealer's card. The object of the double down bet is to select one of the next 4 cards and if your card beats the dealer's card, you win the double down bet.

I don't remember if I won or lost that hand because I still couldn't figure out what the heck just happened. Before I stopped playing this machine today, that screen popped up a couple more times. This is really strange. I must have hit the wrong key by mistake but pretty much just laughed it off.

At 1pm, Wifey took a break and went back to the room until 4:30pm.

At 5:30pm, Wifey hits her first 'four deuces' of the trip. Yippee!

Wifey calls it a night at 6:30pm.

At 6:43pm, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

I grabbed a couple slices of pizza for dinner and play video poker until 8:30pm. Time to call it a night.

Day 3 (Friday, 5/14):

We're up at 2:54am to start the day. Out the door by 3:14am. By 3:25am, we're sitting side by side playing our 'deuces wild' video poker. This is another 3X points day. We ordered a couple breakfast sandwiches from Fatburger. About 10am, Wifey took a 30 minute break and was back playing next to me by 10:30am. For lunch, Wifey had a grilled sandwich and a chocolate shake from Fatburger and I had pizza. We ate at our machines.

At 2:20pm, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee! Uh oh... This is the same machine I played yesterday where a "double down' screen popped up a few times. Well, it happened again but this time, I must have hit the "double down" button (wherever that button is) and I was doubling down on my "four deuces". A nice lady sitting to my left explained that she has been waiting patiently to play the machine I was playing because that's the only video poker machine in the casino with a 'double down' button. Crap. Yep, instead of just winning $250 for my 'four deuces', I am 'doubling down' for a chance to win $500. Of course, if I lose the double down bet I come away with $0 for my 'four deuces'. Well, the dealer card is a '5'. That means that I could only lose my double down bet if the card I select (from the next 4 cards) is a '3' or a '4'. Okay, I take a few seconds and select my card. It's an Ace. I win my double down bet and win $500 for my 'four deuces'. I then figured out how how I must have accidently hit the double down button and made sure I never did that again. That was a stressful few minutes...

About 3:30pm, Wifey took break until 5pm. For dinner, I ordered us a couple bowls of New England Clam Chowder and we ate at our machines.

At 7pm, Wifey hits her first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee! And then Wifey called it a night.

At 7:30pm, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

I stopped playing video poker at 7:40pm. It's time to head to the Roulette table. Hey, it's not my money I'm risking. Someone at work requested that I place two separate $10 bets for him. Since I don't want to use his real name, I'll call him Socks (a.k.a. Sock Mama). Here's his brilliant betting scheme for bet #1:

1. Bet $10 on red.
2. If he should win, let it ride on black.
3. If he should win again, let it all ride on red.
4. Should red win again, let it all ride on red again.

I wasn't sure what night I would head to the Roulette table but I figured it would be on my way back to the room one evening. For some reason, I decided tonight's the night for bet #1.

So... I throw down $10 and get two $5 chips. The minimum bet is $5. I make the $10 bet on red. There's no one playing at this table but there a gentleman that was sitting down at the table. He was rooting me on. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ Red. Great, first spin wins and the dealer slides $10 over. I then follow my instructions from Sock Mama and move the $20 over to black. This guy sitting there continues to root for me. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ Black. Another winner. The dealer slides $20 over. I stack the chips and move the $40 back to red. This guy continues to root for me. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ Red. Another winner. The dealer slides $40 over. I stack the chips and keep the $80 on red. Now the guy sitting there starts waving his arms saying, "No more!". I told him this isn't my money and I have one more bet to win or lose. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ Red again. Another winner. That's four winning spins in a row. The dealer slides $80 over. I throw the dealer a red chip ($5) and leave the table heading for the cashier. That initial $10 turned into $160, then $155 after the $5 tip. Sock Mama will be happy. Time to call it a night.

Wifey is up at 3:35am and out the door at 3:55am. We grabbed a couple breakfast sandwiches at Fatburger. yeah, 20% Wifey starts playing at 4:05am while I don't begin playing video poker until 4:10am. Today, about all we hit were wild royals. These are only worth $35 apiece but we hit a lot of them. For lunch, Wifey picked up a salad for me and a turkey sandwich for herself. For dinner, I ordered Clam Chowder takeout again from Tides Oyster Bar. It was excellent.

Wifey played on till 6:30pm before calling it a night. I played on.

At 8:55pm, Hubby hits his first and only 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

I call it a night at 9pm.

Day 5 (Sunday, 5/16): 'Moving up' Day (heading to Red Rock)

We're up at 3:45am and after packing, we're out the door at 4:23am. We starting playing video poker at 4:30am. We ordered a couple egg and sausage breakfast sandwiches and a couple vanila milkshakes. Yum.

At 5:39am, Hubby hits 'four deuces'. Yippee!

We play until 6:35am and then head to the room to grab our luggage. We checkout just before 7am and head outside to our limo for the ride to Red Rock. Wifey gets a red rose and we share a bottle of champagne. It was about a 25 minute ride to Red Rock.

After tipping the driver, we leave our luggage with the bell desk guys, and head to the front desk. Too early (7:30am) to get a room so we ask for a room by the elevator. They will call my cell phone when our room is ready. Time to head to our machines. We're playing again by 7:40am.
We ended up with a very nice room near the elevator on the 7th floor.

At 8:44am, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

At 11:36am, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

We ate salads for lunch from the Tropical Smoothie Cafe. And yes, we ate at our machines.

At 3:44pm, Wifey hits 'four deuces'. Yippee!

For dinner, we split a turkey sandwich from Capriotti's sandwich shop. Wifey calls it a night at 5:50pm.

At 6:28pm, Hubby hits third 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

I play on until 7:30pm but before heading to the room, I stop at the gift shop and pick up a couple of sweatshirts. It can get very cold near the machines we have been playing and without these sweatshirts, we would have suffered.

This was the night I decided to place the second $10 roulette bet for Sock Mama. Unfortunately, the first spin was a loser. Sorry Socks.

At 8:13am, Hubby hits 'four deuces'. Yippee!

We ate salads for lunch at our machines from the Tropical Smoothie Cafe. For dinner, we ordered takeout from the Grand Cafe. I had the baked meatloaf and Wifey have the Salmon. We each had a small piece of cheesecake for dessert. Wifey played till 6:30pm while I played until 7:30pm.

Between 4:15am and 5:40am, no points registered on our account. Later in the evening after I stopped playing, I checked at the rewards center and they told me they would look into this and someone would call my cell phone. No one called me that night.

We're up at 3:33am and out the door at 4:12am. I stop at the Grand cafe for takeout. Large OJ, Hot Oatmeal for Wifey, Yogurt for Hubby, a Fruitcup for each of us, and a couple ice waters. Wifey starts playing at 4:15am while I don't get started until 4:30am. Today will be a 3X points day.

At 5:43am, Wifey hits her first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

Between 4:15am and 5:50am, no points registered on our account. We had a similar problem yesterday morning. I checked at the rewards center when they opened at 7am and they told me I had to speak to a floor person. I spoke to a floor supervisor and she filled our paperwork for yesterday morning and this mroning for our missing points. Later in the day, we were given credit for our missing points.

At 8:38am, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

For lunch, we shared a turkey sandwich from Capriotti's sandwich shop.

At 1:37pm, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

At 4:02pm, Hubby hits his 'Royal Flush'. Yippee! I was dealt a K, Q, J of clubs and then drew the 10 and Ace of clubs. Now where's the drink lady???

At 4:32pm, Wifey hits her second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

At 5:15pm, Wifey hits her 'Royal Flush'. Yippee! Wifey was dealt a K, Q, Ace of clubs and drew the J and 10 of clubs.

For dinner, we each had a grilled chicken sandwich from Fatburger.

At 7:29pm, Hubby hits his third 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

At 6:56am, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

At 7:56am, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the day. Yippee!

Around 8am, we ordered a couple omelette wraps. For lunch, we shared another turkey sandwich.

This turned out to be a rough day for Wifey who had to feed quite a lot of $100 bills into her machine.

Wifey played until 7pm this evening. At that time, I cashed out of my machine and moved over to Wifey's machine for the next 2 hours. I called it a night at 9pm.

We're up at 3:25am and pack up for the last time. We head out at 4:13am. Wifey starts playing at 4:20am while I grab takeout and starting playing again at 4:25am. I'm playing slowly this morning. Perhaps, I had a bit too much Merlot last night.

At 4:36am, Hubby hits his first 'four deuces' of the morning. Yippee!

At 6:13am, Hubby hits his second 'four deuces' of the morning. Yippee!

As my machine is singing while cranking out the $250 in credits, Wifey says 'Four Deuces'. Yeah, I know - I just hit 'four deuces'. Then Wifey hits me and says it again. I look over at her machine and she just hit 'four deuces. So both our machines are singing the four deuces song and splitting out the credits at the same time. This was wonderful and we needed it. We stopped playing at 6:30am.

Day 9 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

We head back to the room, grab our luggage and head to front desk to check out. I asked the front desk to have our host review our charges and I would contact her upon returning home. We pick up the 7am shuttle to the airport. We had breakfast and headed over to a couple Wheel of Fortune slot machines. We each put $20 in and after 20 minutes or so, we cashed out $100 for a $60 profit. We then headed for our gate for a 10:00 takeoff.

I sent an e-mail to our host at Green Valley Ranch letting her know that we had another wonderful but exhausting trip to Las Vegas. We managed to cycle $85,672.00 through the video poker machines over 4 days at Green Valley Ranch and lost $870.00 while at GVR. As it turned out, GVR was not impressed with this $ amount cycled through over four days at GVR. She could not comp the fourth night.

I also sent an e-mail to our host at Red Rock. We managed to cycle $89,876.00 through the video poker machines over 4 days at Red Rock and ended up winning $520.00 while at Red Rock. Here again, Red Rock was not impressed at the $ amount we cycled through the machines over 4 days. She could not comp nights 3 and 4 but we did get a great rate for those 2 nights ($59+tax per night).

We will definitely return to Red Rock and probably Green valley Ranch too later this year.

- Red Rock - 2 of 4 nights comped, last two nights at casino rate ($59 + tax). Remaining ~$276 in room/food charges taken off the bill using 165,600 points from our account. .

Final Thoughts:
- Mission partially accomplished - we lost at GVR, won at Red Rock, lost overall.
- Presidential Limo is really nice - comes with red rose for Wifey and bottle of champagne - this is perfect for moving from Green Valley Ranch to Red Rock.
- Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock serve pretty good Merlot
- Hubby beat Wifey good this trip (gambling-wise)
- 8 days/nights in Vegas is perfect for us as long as I don't have too much of a problem with Carpal Tunnel or arthritic hands. Thank goodness I brought (and used) my wrist brace and Salonpas (medicated heat patches) for my hands. These made the occasional wrist/hand pain manageable.
- We find we can play longer each day if we hold off on the Merlot until later in the afternoon.

Thank you once again for another detailed report. My wife pays deuces wild as well and has had some luck, but does not play as long you do.

I see you only got a Royal every 70,000 hands, I believe every 40,000 is supose to be the average. Do you keep long term results to see if you are near that average.

 

Love your reports. I find my finger tips start to hurt after a fraction of time you log at the machines. You are a trooper.

 

Tell wifey you will have to leave her at home if she doesn't get her act together!!! I felt like I was reading about myself - she just kept losing every day poor thing!

 

Wow. That is amazing! I love VP and play for as long as I can but you guys are impressive!!

Thanks for the TR! I like the way it was written, not too long but detailed. We have not stayed at either GV or RR but have gambled at GV. We have thought about staying at GV, which one would you recommend over the other? We have used Presidential Limo and had great experiences with them.

Again, sounds like at a nice trip and I appreciate you sharing it.

Yes, I keep records for all our Vegas Trips. Since May 2002, we have been to Las Vegas 20 times spread over 132 days. I started out playing only Blackjack while Wifey played Deuces Wild. I accummulated 248.78 hours at the blackjack tables before switching to Deuces Wild. A couple bad beats will do that. To date, we have played (Wifey and I) 1,613,687 hands of Deuces Wild over 2,859.15 hours. During that time, we got 30 Royals, averaging 1 every 53,790 hands. Long term, we should be getting Royals once every 45,281 hands. So we're overdue on some Royals. We have also gotten 'Four Deuces' 297 times, averaging 1 every 5,433 hands. We should be getting 'Four Deuces' (long term) once every 4,909 hands.

Without a doubt, I rather stay at Red Rock and play Deuces Wild at Red Rock over GVR. The rooms are nicer at RR (IMHO) and the optimum video poker machines are nicer at RR. At RR, the machines are newer and you can adjust the speed. We prefer the set the speed as high as it will go at RR. It's just a nicer casino/hotel than GVR. Of course GVR is still much nicer than Sunset Station.

Ylu guys amaze me. I love to play VP. But, I know I don't have the endurance y'all do. Hundreds of hours gambling and only a $350 loss for the trip. Sounds like a win in my book. Overall, I prefer Red Rock. My preference is based on the fact that I love the Spa at RR. I think the rooms at Red Rock are very nice yet I like the GVR rooms more. I guess I prefer the Bed and Breakfast feel of the GVR over the sleek modern style of RR. They are both great hotels.

Tell me more about the medicated wrist/hand wraps. I have RA and it is worse in my hands/wrists/fingers. I use thermacare wraps but they don't always help.

Do you track all the tips etc? Is that included in the wins and losses? My gambling involves all expenses except for the plane ticket.

I would drink too much to keep details. Or can you check your account and it tells you?

And if the cocktail waitress did not come around I would just go hang out in the bar.

These are called "SALONPAS". The package says "For temporary relief of minor aches & pains of muscles & joints associated with arthritis, simple backache, strains, bruises, sprains." The pads are 2.56 inches by 1.65 inches. They come 20 in a pak, 20 paks in a box. We usually buy them at Costco. A few years ago, the pain in my hands (while playing video poker) got so bad, I would have had to stop playing video poker if Wifey hadn't picked up these pads for me to try. These pads are amazing. As soon as I put them on my hands between my wrist and knuckles, you can feel the warmth. Since then, we never head to Vegas without a good supply of these pads.

We do not actually keep track of our tips. They are simply part of the "hidden" cost of going to Vegas. There are tips that we know we're going to pay like for the baggage handlers at the airport, tips for the shuttles, limos, bell desk folks, housekeeping, and of course, the drink ladies. If I wanted to, at the end of the trip I could figure out what we spent in tips but I choose not to. It's just a cost that we don't mind paying for our trips to Vegas.
