Traveling with your coffee maker

I've seen this post on here before, but its 2021 now, we just want through a pandemic, TSA is a crapshoot and I don't want to upset them with weird stuff in the bag, and you know sanitation in the rooms is a thing. I cannot stand k-cups and don't want to wait in line at Starbucks.

Anyone traveling with their coffee maker these days, how did it go? Was it gross to get it out of the sink or am I being paranoid.

Where did you get your coffee maker? What did you use?

 

I usually stay at Gold Coast and they have a coffee maker. I run a few cups of water through it before I use it. When I stay where there is no coffee maker I use an immersion heater to heat the water and then use a pour over or bags for loose leaf tea with coffee instead. I have a filtered Brita sports bottle that I use to get water from the tap or just stock up on bottled.

I always put my electronic stuff and food items in my personal size carry on so they don't have to dig through my larger bag. Didn't have a problem in the past.

This trip I am taking my hotpot. I've got a fridge and will likely be bringing a lot of my meals up to the room, so there'll be leftovers. My friend took one last week and she thought it was great.

 

I take a kettle and instant coffee and some to go cups bought at the dollar store. Not the best but it sure is convenient.

 

I'm with @DBear. Finding a decent instant coffee was a game changer for me. I bought a collapsible hot water kettle (Amazon) and Starbucks via Instant is a very decent instant coffee. I also bring to-go cups as well.

 

There were some members who posted that they would go to Target or other store upon landing and would buy a cheap coffee maker for the room then leave it when the week was up.

Probably cheaper than hitting up Starbucks ever morning and can have as much or as little as you like.

 

I take a folding electric kettle to make either tea or coffee. It works great plugged into the bathroom plug. I don't like instant coffee, so I bring my own ground coffee, a ceramic cup, and a stainless steel contraption that fits on top and lets me drip the boiling water into the cup. One added benefit is that I can make just half a cup if I want, and not let the cup get cold, although for my next trip I've already bought a plug in coffee warmer that I use next to my computer at home. The one I bought has three settings. It will actually bring a room temperature coffee up to hot, although that takes a bit of time. I also bring a large soup cup. I can make a pretty good drink from no salt chicken boullion. Sometimes I toss in veggies from the meal I had in the restaurant. And I steep tea for iced tea.

 

I really doubt there is any issue with TSA.

 

You really have to love coffee to lug a coffee maker around when traveling.

 

I have a travel coffee maker that's smaller than many people's hair appliances. Or shoe collections. We all make choices when we pack ;-)

 

Yes, I am one of those people and yes I'm flying to Vegas on Monday with my travel coffee pot. It's a small 4 cup Cuisinart with a stainless steel carafe so not a chance to break it. I do take it in a small overhead bag with other things like shoes. No one has questioned anything.

I also have the small collapsible pot found on Amazon that I took to Italy and a Med cruise in 2019. I tested ALL the instant coffees and the one that smelled and tasted closest to real coffee was Starbuck's House Via. Hard to find, but it's the best. For Vegas it's the real pot though.

 

I love coffee but am not picky about it. And I do NOT like Starbucks via. So buy a few and test!

 

I used to bring a kettle and Starbucks instant....and somewhere in the last few years, I said, screw it, I'm on vacation, I'll just pay the $5 for the morning coffee. And it's ok.

On a road trip? I'll absolutely bring coffee supplies. But for me, Vegas is a flight.

 

I put these in the checked luggage, so I don't know about TSA.
I go for trips of many days, and solo, and want to stay on diet some of the time and eat in the room. My suggestions are all light. No lugging is involved, nor do they take up much space in the suitcase. I know folks who have taken a small coffee pot, but the cleanup is much more than this drip system. I just toss the used grinds in the garbage and rinse the funnel a little. The electric kettle needs just to be rinsed as it only has had boiling water in it.

 

I get that reasoning and I think it is fine if you are good going out for the coffee. I like just settling in, making what I want, and having morning refreshment while still in my pajamas. And I'm going to love this warmer because I drink coffee slowly, and it often cools before it is gone. However, I go to Vegas for a long while. My next trip will be a total of 26 mornings. The first week I'll make coffee in a coffee pot as it is in Marriot Chateau Timeshare. The next two weeks will be at the Longhorn where there is no in room coffee pot. The last five days will be at South Point which has an in room coffee pot, but I don't usually like hotel coffees. I like my own. Besides, at $5 a day I'd spend $130 on coffee. I'd rather gamble that money.

I want my coffee first thing when I wake up. I want to lay in bed, drink coffee, have some snacks and read stuff on my phone. I have no desire to get dressed and go find coffee. (no to room service) I also like my own stuff, right now it's Peet's dark roast house blend decaf.

 

I always rent a car. I drink a pot of coffee a day for about 2 weeks (16 days next trip). I get these at Walmart: $10.84 12-cup coffee pot and the $6.27 lb of Starbucks coffee. I bring filters and Equal from home. I get a glass of milk at the bar on my way up to my room for the pot the next morning. Works great. I leave the pot for the maid or some other VMBer coming into town when I'm leaving.

I use this travel coffee maker. Got it from Amazon, but it shows unavailable right now. But it was only $10, weighs less than a pound and easy to pack. I NEED my first cup of coffee when I wake up, and I hate having to run downstairs to get it. I have never tried it with carry on, but put it in my checked luggage all the time.

 

I also have a small one cupper, all in a little travel bag, that I bought over 20 years ago.
Has little containers for sugar, coffee, etc...
A rinse-able mesh filter.
I take it all the time in my checked bag.
If I stay at GC or Orleans, I may not pack it.
