I've developed an interest in historic Vegas videos online. Like to watch old travel promos, history of the city, etc. I was watching an old promotional film on The Desert Inn. And, not surprisingly, they show the wonderful pool area - with people using high and low boards. And I thought.... "when did diving boards disappear from resorts?" I assume it was a safety and liability issue. And, nowadays, any pool Ive been too is too shallow for diving. Was there a time the resorts all removed boards? Some triggering accident? Is it also about water saving and pool depth? Are there any pools on the Strip, or elsewhere in LV, with diving boards?
None on the Strip. In fact, I believe Ballys is the only pool on the Strip with a true deep end (but still no diving board)
I remember staying at Bally’s 3 years ago and I think that the pool had a deep end, but no diving board. But like so much that has happened in the past, the actions of a few screw up the fun for the rest of us.
Interesting observation. As a child of the ‘60’s we never stayed at a hotel without a pool that would have a diving board. And probably a drain to suction our hair or limbs. And maybe an electric heater. I’m not a big aficionado of Vegas pools but I have noticed the obvious omission of a deep end.
Yeah, booze and diving boards definitely don't mix well, especially in a party setting like Vegas. It's a shame, though, that almost every pool (except Bally's) is the same 3-1/2 feet deep these days. I feel like I'm crouching the entire time I'm in the water.
Diving in off a properly designed diving board is safe. I know a guy who did suffer a serious neck injury diving into 3 feet of water. There was no diving board. It was a YOLO moment he has paid for ever since.
