This condition, if not addressed, could result in compressor stalls and dual-engine power loss without the ability to restart, which could result in a forced off-airport landing," the directive said.

Isn't that just a fancy way of saying crash.

    ......
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency airworthiness directive for 2,000 Boeing (BA) 737 NG and Classic aircraft that have been in storage over a potential engine problem.

Inspectors found corrosion in air check valves when bringing the older-generation Boeing 737 aircraft out of storage. They could cause the engines to fail without the ability to restart.

The FAA is ordering immediate inspection of the jets, and any valves with corrosion must be replaced before a plane can return to service.

The directive applies to 737s that have been in storage, defined as any plane that has not been flown in a week. Many planes have been grounded amid plunging travel demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Corrosion of these valves on both engines could result in a dual-engine power loss without the ability to restart. This condition, if not addressed, could result in compressor stalls and dual-engine power loss without the ability to restart, which could result in a forced off-airport landing," the directive said.

Nah, they did say "landing." Planes can land on freeways, in fields ... on the Hudson.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

Meh, planes don't do nearly as well in storage, as they do when being used on a regular basis. These "storage problems" are not unexpected. You never know what issues will crop up, but something always does. Hopefully, it will keep some mechanics employed.

BTW, the engines on the 737NG aren't made by Boeing, they are made by CFM International. Boeing doesn't make engines.

If those engines were made by Pratt & Whitney they would be fine.

Technically, a crash is still a landing. Even on water, it's gonna sink to the bottom, which is just submerged "land"

The late, great talk radio legend Bruce Williams often said that. Having nearly been killed in a plane crash, I guess he'd know!

Doesn't Southwest use the 737? Exclusively?

Yes, they do. I work with a couple of airplane buffs who point this out from time to time.

Remember boys and girls; a forced off-airport landing is considerably preferable to the RUD (rapid unscheduled disassembly)*

Corrosion is the killer to all air frames. There is constant R&D into anti-corrosion.

Just to praise the U.S. Air Force, the B-52 has been flying on the same basic air frame for more than 70 years.

Yep. Put a bunch of planes on a ship, out in the middle of the ocean, and the corrosion control shop stays real busy.
