Best Cover Songs

Since we have a thread talking about worst songs by artists, I thought I would start one to amplify some of the best covers of songs. I am partial to a couple here.

 

Russian band covering Chicago's 25 or 6 to 4. Perfect cover, and these guys don't even speak English!

I think one of the best covers ever, but he did make it his own

 

Last Licks, another great cover band based in the Northeast, playing Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding"

 

The Stones doing "Wild Horses."

What? That's a Stones song. Yes, but Mick let the Flying Burrito Brothers record and release it before Sticky Fingers was released.

 

Yeah, I didn't include that one because I think of it as his song now.

 

Joan Osborne - What Becomes of the Brokenhearted

In my not so humble opinion, it's much better than the original.

 

Whitney Houston singing Dolly Parton’s song.

 

Marvin Gaye doing "Heard it through the Grapevine", originally a # 2 hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips

 

I really like the Clash's rousing rendition of "I Fought the Law", originally by the Crickets, made popular by the Bobby Fuller Four in the early/mid 60's

 

Ha! You came up with maybe my two LEAST favorite ever! Joe Cocker could flat-out not sing a lick, and Whitney’s is an abomination of the beautiful original. If you threw, “Light My Fire” by Jose Feliciano in there, you would have a triumvirate of horror.

In general, I would say 99% of remakes are nowhere near as good as the original. But here is one that was at least pretty good:



And here is the extremely rare one that is REALLY good:

 

Vanilla Fudge. You Keep Me Hangin' On. I don't think they had much original stuff. Mostly covers.

 

I'm not much of a Guns fan but this is a solid cover:

 

Loved the Foos cover of Baker Street and GNR cover of Heavens Door but I'll take Rob Zombies cover of BTO's Were an American Band or Pantera's cover of Ted Nugents Cat Scratch Fever.

 

"RESPECT" by Arettha Frankling. Written and orginally recorded by Otis Redding. But Aretha made it an anthem.

 

If you want to see good heavy metal covers of a lot of different songs check out Leo Moracchioli on you tube he does a great job on most songs, I have entertained my self with watching these for many hours.

 

I think I may have posted this somewhere before, but....

 

I love heavy metal covers of Christmas tunes, especially the standards. I think Twisted Sister did a while Christmas album of these.
