Just saw the Irishman at a local independent theatre. Found it on a website listing where it’s still playing in theatres and was surprised it’s still playing now even after its launch on Netflix.

I liked it but didn’t love it. I’d still recommend to everyone given the quality acting but perhaps it was the hype and expectations going into it that left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. I did love Joe Pesci in it though. He has a subtle restraint to him that can only come with age, confident enough not to overdo things. Complete opposite of his fly off the top, wild character in Casino, which is the movie I kept thinking of when seeing DeNiro and Pesci in the same scenes. Harvey Keitel makes a good mob boss too and the Dunes made a cameo as well!

I also thought of the Forest Gump reference made earlier by @VivaLasVegas. Forest Gump for potty mouths could have been the pitch line. I’m surprised they couldn’t find a way to fit the moon landing into the story.

The 3.5 hours flew by and it’s a worthwhile time investment as the acting is well above par. You know they don’t have many movies left in them. It was also the first movie where I was able to take advantage of the free popcorn refill as I got hungry again during the third hour.

If a movie makes me google more about the real life events, then I think it did a good job presenting the story and characters which is exactly what I’m going to google for the rest of tonight. Knives Out is next on my list, then Episode IX on December 19th.

All I could think of was Don Cherry at this point, the long time Canadian hockey commenter and once Boston Bruins coach, who lost his job recently for using that phrase. I think Don was wrong to say that but had good intentions asking everyone to wear poppies.

I cracked up when a de-aged DeNiro was laying a beat down on the shop owner in front of his daughter. I was worried he was going to hurt himself kicking air like that.

I saw it in a local independent theatre this weekend.
Could have trimmed 15-30 minutes off, but still worth the price of admission.

A quite good movie, but leaves me thinking what they could have done if they had gotten it together 10 years earlier.

The de-aged Deniro was a tough sell as a rough and tumble guy, and I also felt like the de-aging stole some of the expression from his face, hurting the performance a bit (Pesci and Pacino I thought were great even de-aged, but they had less physical parts to sell, too). Amazing to see Pesci play such an understated, subtle character given his history in Scorcese pictures.

Finished it up last night. I think that was the last of the big time Mob flicks. Now we're all cartel when it comes to gangsters. Narcos.
A really telling part was when the nurse didn't know who Jimmy Hoffa was. Some aged character from a bygone era.
But it was the center of Frank's universe, he'd outlived all the others. Great film, regardless of how much fact v. fiction there was.

Watched the film this week on Netflix + the Trailer of the 4 lads speaking about the movie & Scorsese's aging tricks.

All in all, excellent, but it did take 3 late nights to take it in. This is a bit Captain Obvious, but I wonder if the 3 all time great stars, weren't in it (with their own Mob pic backgrounds), whether it would be as good!

The Trailer revealed that Pesci wanted to play a Good Fellas/ Casino Tony Pro wild man, but Scorsese refused.

From the personal side, my wife came from N.E. Pa and I frequented the well known Mob Towns of Kingston, Pittston & Macanaqua- many times! In fact, I used to go watch the NFL in a fabulous little Irish Bar in Wilkes Barre. As a sports betting person, It was no surprise to me, that it got busted later, by the FBI, for gambling & numbers.

what a shitty movie ...all those guys are too old to pull the younger age thing off
    deniro
    pesi
    pachino
seriously they should have used younger actors, trying to cash in on the 3 that they used was terrible judgement
i watched about 45 mins and had to turn it off, now i love me a gangster/mob movie but this aint it !!
and to think it had a 150,000,000 budget....
casino , goodfellas , even the godfather were much better movies

Yeah, as I mentioned above, its not a gangster movie. The fact that the main characters were part of that world is superfluous to the plot and themes. That's why the Hoffa murder takes place with about an hour remaining in the film. The more I thought about it, the more I think this film has more in common with Raging Bull than any gangster film. So if you're expecting a mobster movie, you will be disappointed. And if you didn't like it, that's cool. Everyone has their preferences. But its hard to make sweeping conclusions when you only watched the first fifth of the film

I avoided all comments written about this movie until I saw it first.
    So
If you want " Goodfellas II "........you will be disappointed
and I think that's why people feel poorly about the film.
It's interesting to weave thru all the historical events and see the connecting threads ( whether, fact or fiction )
And Scorsese does make some statements about " Aging "....toward the end
    .
I did notice several "physical limitations" by some actors who were playing younger rolls.
Their "Body Language" was not that, of a younger man........even with make up or computer processing.
As mentioned - DeNiro kicking the guy ( was a bit awkward )......or when Pacino tried to rise "quickly" from his chair + desk.
    .
Very long film...........I did have to view it in two sittings.
    .
I just couldn't tell sometimes ?.........so is THAT how "so + so" actually looks , nowadays ?........or is that make up or Computer work ?
    .
I liked the film............it's a history lesson...........whether fact or fiction
