A couple of the original rules when this game started were:
    - Free splits on any pair but 10s and 4s
    - Double down on any number of cards

It wasn't long before they modified the rules to allow free splitting of 4s and doing away with the multi-card double down.

haha, oh yes. I’ve been ridiculed by players and dealers. I had one player get really really mad at me because I wasn’t playing the side bet. She angrily grabbed her chips off the table while cussing (I kept getting chips right after I sat down). The dealers also love to point out how much money you left on the table.

All I know is that something good happened here.
Anyone interested in explaining the gold coins and what exactly happened?

It's a side bet that is offered at Freebet Blackjack tables.
Each time you qualify for, and use a "free bet", the dealer places a special "gold coin" next your bet to signify the double-down or split that you're playing.
The side bet pays progressively higher bonuses, depending on how many "gold coins" you qualify for in a single hand.
Here's the pay-table from the Wizard:

In Free Bet Blackjack, you are allowed to split all pairs up to 4 total hands except for ten-point cards and double on hard 9-11 for "free" in exchange for the dealer pushing on 22.

These "free splits" and "free doubles" are represented by gold coins with the "Free Bet Blackjack" logo to keep tabs on them.

In this example he got a pair of 5s which he split to earn his first gold coin. And yes this was correct over doubling because he was playing the side bet.

Then at least on one of the hands he got another 5 to be able to split again and get another gold coin. And then got another 5 to be able to split again for 3 total gold coins from the splits. Then on each of the four hands, he earned a free double down by getting a total of hard 9-11 on his first two cards, which gave him 7 coins total.

Also i think it's awesome he got it from splitting 5s, which you would never do in a straight up blackjack game.

Congrats @Tuebbis! And no, I don't remember even seeing a pic of it before! Did they verify the tape over it too?

This is an awesome hit! I am tempted to play more FreeBet (downtown, where it can pay 3-2) as my one experience playing it at an Indian casino was positive. Not sure if I would NOT play the Side bet though, because of situations like this. I wonder what WoV has as the house edge for this..?

That's not bad especially with a "jackpot" style payoff possible... Might be the only side bet I would ever play

Yes, like everyone said. Don’t play this game unless you are playing the side bet. The coins are what makes it worth playing and more fun. And remember not the play basic strategy with the coins on splits and doubles.

Thank you!! And I'm not real sure...there were about 3-4 people in suits and ties on the phone in the pit area so I'm sure they were phoning to the eye in the sky.

The pit boss told me that this would be the only side bet he'd play in the casino, but of course, this was after I won. Probably just wanted a tip! :rolleyes2:

I never play this side bet on FB BJ. And probably still won't even after seeing this thread. I generally don't play the side bets on any Black Jack games.

However, when I play 3Card Poker and High Card Flush for the 1st time in my upcoming trip, I will be playing the side bets.

It's psychological. I am more comfortable with BJ and feel that I know most of the proper plays. So when the side bets are offered, I look at them as sucker bets and refuse. Even though in the other games they are probably just as much or even more of a sucker bet. Yes I am weird.

It looks like with the BEST pay table for the side bets at 3 card poker, is just a tiny bit better than the WORST pay table side bet at Free Bet.

I've played lots of Free Bet. I too never play the side bets at anything assuming, and almost always for a reason, that they are very much in the house's favor. But now looking into it, I probably will play it. At least some.

Entertainment value. I know the lotteries are the worst gamble there is, but I still buy a ticket when they are big jackpots because I get more than $2 entertainment out of planning what I'll do after I win. So even though I'm giving a slight premium to play this at Free Bet, it'll be worth the entertainment value.
