Table Games Did You Want To Try Craps, But Felt Too Intimidated?

Great Craps class 2 years ago at NYNY that was free and excellent. I have been hooked since and Blackjack has now become my distant 2nd favorite casino game!

I’d love to play craps, but all table games intimidate me.

 

For those of you intimidated by table games what is your concern? I’m truly curious? Is it that you don’t know how to get your chips, just put your money down on the table in front of you. Are you concerned about other players and comments they may make about newbies? Go to an empty table and tell the dealer you’re new to the game, most will be glad to help. We were all newbs at one time or another.

I play craps pretty much exclusively it looks hard to pick up but really isn’t. After about 5 minutes I figured it out and was hooked. I don’t like Blackjack because I don’t like to think when I gamble and it’s just very boring to me. My luck is horrible at most of the other carnie games. I find baccarat maddening and don’t have the discipline to just play one side or the other.

Good luck and do Vegas however you want. However, if you want to try a table game just step up and let the dealer(s) know it’s yiur first time.

 

Ben Jammin: Nice primer for craps. I think adding a Money Management guide would be good too.
Its Only Money brings up some good questions on playing (how to buy in, where to put your cash when buying in), which would make another good addition titled Craps Etiquette. How to cash out, what to do when you have a dealer paying you discrepancy, where to put your chips when playing various bets, when to pick them up, common rules; hands/body parts in back of the rim, no drinks above rail, hit back wall etc.,etc.

 

This is a good one. I was in Excalibur in July playing a $5 table. One of the least helpful crews i've played with. One guy was obviously fairly new, and he started off playing the field. He was putting his bet down no issue. Then he wanted to place a number, and went and placed the chip himself in the number and the dealer got upset, told him not to do that. He didn't explain that the field bet is placed by the player but the place bets are not. He did it a few times before catching on, but it would have been helpful if the first time, the dealer just explained how to place those bets.

 

Once had a newbie that was next to me do the same thing...tried to put his chips on the number he wanted to play. The dealer said, (with hand waving over the 4-10) "This is my cash register. Do not put your hands into my cash register. Put the chips in the come section and tell me what you want."
It was so short and got the point across so well there wasn't another problem. I now explain it to newbies in the same way.

 

I was a newbie once and I remember that and try to help newbies with "craps etiquette" whenever I can........I learned from the free class at NYNY and have been hooked since! I highly recommend that class........the pit boss who did it was great and really wanted people to understand how to play.

 

A couple of years ago I was at PH and we had a guy (I'm guessing it was one of the dealers) who was super friendly and helpful. Since I rarely play, I always get a bit intimidated but I do enjoy it!

 

I've tried it, but I really don't enjoy it because I don't have the attention span for it in the evenings, and honestly, I don't find it fun or enjoyable. Too much work!

 

not much work if it is a hot table....you just watch the chips come your way........you pray for sessions like that!

 

I learned by starting with one bet--pass line and odds. I added a place bet after a bit and moved forward from there. The intimidation of the craps table comes from trying to "get" all of the bets at one time.

 

Try playing there on the graveyard shift But, in their defense $5 on the strip and the players they have to deal to.

 

As someone who used to walk right past the craps tables for years in a casino, I think I can explain.

1- when you walk up there are no seats like at table card games so you have to wedge yourself in to an already crowded table
2- then you have to figure out what is going on. I know now but when all you see are 30-35 spots to place bets when you include all the hop bets in the middle
3- and hope the other players are not going to get mad when you ask questions of the dealers or place incorrect bets somewhere.

I got lucky, the first night I ever played I walked up to an empty table they had just opened and there was a very nice female dealer working who showed me all the bets and some basic strat (pass line and odds and maybe just start with a 6/8 place bet). A couple people walked up to the table but it wasn't overwhelming enough to make me leave. Now I love it but if you have never played, the classes would be invaluable.

 

Glad these posts were resurrected! I finally feel confident playing the pass line and the odds bet. Where I get hesitant, are the place bets. On my next trip to LV, I really want to take the next step in craps and try at least placing the 6 & 8. Seems a tiny thing to you experts, eh?

 

Not too difficult, throw 12 out there and say "place the 6 and 8"

Don't know what could be much easier.

 

I have taught many people to play craps. Almost all were surprised how simple it really is.
1)memorize “7 11 you win; 2 3 12 you lose” for when the hockey puck off
2) see where your bets are placed
3) VERY IMPORTANT: ignore what everyone else is doing at the table.

 

What do you teach them about odds bets ? What about place bets ?

What do you teach them when they want to learn to play the dark side?

4&10 any amount
If place bet and odd behind the line
6&8 $5 win $6

you can get an app for any table game on your phone (many are free) - for years I ignored the craps table because just looking at the layout, seeing the madness (reminded me of the commodity exchanges) I always passed on the game because I didn't want to figure out "rocket science" while on vacation. I got an app, learned the game fairly quickly and on my August 2014 trip I played the "real thing" at Binions for the first time - craps took over BJ as my favorite table game. I did start at a table early in the morning so it was just me and another guy playing, it wasn't long before I had no problem being at one of those crazier tables cramming in shoulder to shoulder and making bets (and checking payouts - yes, always check your payouts, craps is a game where dealers are probably more apt to make mistakes and in a crowded game when chips are flying on every roll sometimes the drunk standing next to you might scoop up your winnings thinking they are his, a lot of times these are just honest mistakes though, the key is to pay attention)
