Table Games Craps the wrong way

@Packer used to post here on VMB quite a lot and I really enjoyed reading his posts from playing the don't side.

I'll play the dark side but it just seems to be so much of a grind. I've probably lost less, on a per session basis, betting the don't vs. the do, but I'd rather bet with the dice.

 

If I'm on the don't and there's a seven out, I don't pump my fist and yell "woo" when it happens. That will definitely piss off the rest of the table. I just quietly rake in my win.

I recommend the same when playing the dark side.

 

On the way back from Vegas, Monday AM, we stopped at the Nevada Landing, long since gone now.There was a lone Craps table with three players losing their shirts. I pulled up and proceeded to play the don't pass on my roll. The other players kept on betting the pass line and as they lost, I won. Then one gentleman asked, "How do you do that?" I replied "it would take some time to explain it, just do what I do". and so, he did. Then the other two joined in and we were on a roll!
Hootin and Hollerin for that 7 to come! We made some money.
The pit boss came over and closed the table.

I rarely play the don't pass, but sometimes I like to do the Don't Come. Sometimes with a pass line bet too....

 

I never play the dark side. The difference in house edge are too insignificant in my opinion to go away from everyone at the table. One of the things I enjoy is the excitement of a hot table and you don't get that on the dark side.

I also don't like the idea of laying lots of money to win a little. If point 7 drives you nuts on the good side, imagine losing way more when the point hits and everyone is celebrating.

 

A cold table would basically be any table that I am current playing on. I think thats the official term.

 

Its not about the difference in the house edge. It's about having the house pay you on every lay bet you have up on the table all at once.
As far as going against the grain, I play to win. It's a fact that the majority of those Do side bettors are going to lose a significant percentage of their stake.
See those casinos? They're not built on winners.

 

I get bored easily so I took the time to really learn how to work the don't side of Craps. OK so I might piss a few folks off but I'm doing it for me.
Do what you will but if you are OCD like me then a fast paced game and a mental challenge are what I live for, and knowing the odds and how to work them is the ticket especially on the don't. It takes some stones (gall) to lay up a table full of cash but when you win you win big. Then the rest of the people on the table pick their jaw up off the ground when they see how much cash you get when the 7 hits.
No risk, No reward.

 

And don't bettors don't walk any richer than pass bettors. The side you play doesn't mean squat. I've watched people on both sides of the dice on the same table go broke. Money management is the only way you can beat the game.

 

I have played the don’t, but out of sheer desperation. I tend to never play the don’t. The reason is that it’s no fun. No fun at all. Miserable. People
respect the don’t players that quietly take their chips when the 7 comes. Where’s the fun?? A main attribute to the game is that it’s exciting! Playing the don’t also means that most additional bets will be controlled and hedges against the don’t pass line. It’s unlikely to build up the way the pass line player can continue to press their bets. So, the main reason I gather don’t players seem to do better than do players, is that money management is at work on the table. Balls to that!! If I wanted to grind out sessions and maximize my chances of winning in a casino, I’d play blackjack. I’m here to play craps. I’m here to high five the next person and will on the next shooter for an hour roll. Same goes for playing the pass line. I’m not the one to make only one sensible bet which is to play the pass line and then place maximum odds behind to reduce the House edge as much as possible. (The best bet in the casino, and one that won’t get you rated play). I watch many players do just that and they stand and wait to see if the point hits. Well, at least they get involved with the other table players. Some post mentioned a comparison to playing the don’t and roulette. Roulette is played with people but independently. Same as craps! No different, except for one small detail....Craps is steeped in superstition!! You see, the casino dealer spins the wheel on roulette. The player throws the dice in Craps...and that’s where it all starts. So many things to do and don’t do at craps table! To me, that all part of the game.

 

Thank you Ben.....! And all who have posted here....! Not meaning to spark controversy. As a beginner to craps, just seemed like a sensable question (about don't pass /come bets) to see how ppl feel about the negative side of bets.....many options,variables and styles of play , but I'm sure we all agree that winning and having fun are our main objectives......I wouldn't take offense if someone was betting the dont side .
As in all table games we either have a gut feeling or system we enjoy playing to express our choices and style of play....so thanks to all of you for helping me dummy up....!!!! Vary interesting......much luck to all....!!!!

 

I tried the don't for a while and didn't like it. When I won, it wasn't fun, and the wins were only a small fractions of my bets.
More importantly, the hot hands were excruciating - not just in what I lost, but the bigger amount I could have taken down if I had been betting right and pressing...
My take is that there are few big wins on the dark side. Mostly just big losses...

 

I will go back and forth. I've been on the Don't during a heater....I've been on the Don't during an extremely cold streak on the table and racked up the chips. I'll usually play Pass, but I don't see the big deal about betting the Don't. I just look at the table majority and won't cheer if I win in the minority. I'll see tables with all Don't players except maybe 1 or 2 on the pass. I'll cheer with everybody on a 7 out in that case. If it's mostly Pass bettors....I won't say a word on a 7 out....a small fist pump a la Tiger Woods at most.

 

The "Do" and "Don't" sides have about a nickel difference in the house advantage per $100. 1.41% versus 1.36%. I haven't found a method that beats those odds over any long period of time playing either way...and I have read a lot of the books and online writings about the subject. The only things that seems work to give you an advantage, yet is hotly debated as something that does not even exist, would be "dice control" or "dice influence." On other boards, those two things have generated a metric crap-ton of posts back and forth with some good old-fashioned name calling included.

Play the way you like. I just don't enjoy the "dark side" all that much. I get the big win when you have numbers loaded up and the devil comes out. The win on one roll is nice. On the other hand, loading up on pass/come bets a little at a time and winning on each roll of a number is fun, too. Either way, a table that is choppy takes the money from both sides. It is the streaks that make it fun. We're all looking for the next one!!

I prefer "Don't" play for the satisfaction of getting paid when a seven-out collapse happens. It's not a sure thing for it to happen that way, so I aim for a "doey don't" mix that gives me fun and avoids risking big losses.

 

For the adventurous,
you can tinker with the "don't" bets on bubble craps.
Give it a try, before you hit a big table.

 

I've played both sides of the table, and i feel like playing the pass and losing is like getting shot ( all your money gone at once ) and playing the dont is death by 1000 cuts ( someone doesn't make any points, but kills all your don't come or lay bets" .

 

This is a fair description. I will say, though, there is definitely satisfaction when you have a ton of money out there playing Don't Pass with two Don't Come bets... and they ship you a giant pile of money when the roll sevens out.

 

I randomly play the dark side. I have a hard time remembering how much to lay down for the odds. Is this right?

If the point is 4 or 10 - $10 in odds pays $5 (or multiples thereof)?
5 or 9 - $9 pays $6?
6 or 8 - $6 pays $5?

Not to make light of you, but I always chuckle when I'm at a table and people don't know what to lay for odds.

Hint: it's the payment you would get if you were betting pass.

6 or 8, $5 odds would win $6, so laying $6 wins $5.
