What do you skip on the Buffet?

I always skip pizza, sushi and bread by choice. I almost always skip dessert, because I usually overdid it on the entrees.

31.6 pounds down since September :headbang: so I try and limit the carbs unless it seems fantastic/the calories are worth it. I used to always have pizza but now I skip it. Same with breads at a buffet though I will sometimes have a super interesting bread taste as part of a regular dining experience. (For example, the fabulous bread at Giada.)

I go for low-fat proteins -- shrimp, crab, turkey, Talapia, etc. -- but if the salmon looks well prepared, I'll get some as well to get those Omega 3s. :) I try and load up on veggies as long as they are not sitting in oil. I do love some carbs though, especially sweet potatoes and anything with cheese. I might have a taste or two to satisfy a craving but I'm addicted to cheese so I now tend to skip it. I love me some sausage but I tend to skip red meats at breakfast or dinner buffets now, a couple of slices of bacon at a breakfast buffet being the exception.

And I still love, love, love sweets. Before my weight loss I would "try" ;) a "taste" of six or seven desserts. Now I find the 2 or 3 mini ones that look the best and sample those and one or two might be sugar free or I'll have a mini scoop of a couple of interesting gelatos.

All of this being said . . . I like the Wynn buffet because sometimes there is food I haven't tried before and that's what I like about buffets, i.e., getting to try things to see if you like them rather than committing to a dish as an entree at a restaurant and not liking it.

I love mollusks, but never, ever touch them on a buffet unless cooked into something like Oyster Stew.

+1. Same goes for beer, but I'll drink their cheap wine if it's on my groupon. lol.

I'm surprised they even serve Mexican at a buffet - no one seems to eat it. But I do. Always fill a tortilla with beans, generic taco meat, some cheese, etc., and enjoy. Also get pineapple, melon & strawberries, whatever beef is being carved, two fried wings, a couple of hot wings, mashed, a couple of veggies. For dessert, bread pudding if available and / cheesecake. I don't do the salad bar, rolls, sushi, Chinese or any of the combo dishes. My choices are pretty simple and straight forward.

I tried some ravioli at the lunch buffet at Aliante....tasted like Chef Boyardee. Yum. Took one bite and that was it for that plate.

If it's a crappy buffet, that might be the best thing there... as an example...Indiana Grand Casino buffet...it was pretty pathetic for lunch...and I did have several rolls there..

Most of it. Most of it is pretty suspect. And different ones got different suspect things that could be great at another buffet.

In general though any Chinese food doesn't seem to translate over to buffets very well for me.

    LOL amen.

If there isn't a Buffet Strategy or Buffet Hacks thread here there should be. I am a frugal deal finding cat & I go to buffets like a football coach plans plays. Take a nice look around & get a lay of the land. Come up with a gameplan. Its probably a problem how serious I take buffets.

Even though Aliante is a pretty cheap cost buffet for breakfast ($6.99 with player's club discount?) they do have an omlet station, and they will crack eggs for you if you ask for that rather than the egg mix they normally use..

I'm very sure they just use the frozen Sysco dishes, many of which I think are just repackaged Stouffer's. The lasagna at our local Horseshoe tastes very much like the Stouffer's Yuppie Chow lasagna that they have in the machines in the lunch room here.

I skip the carbs. Protein and vegetables is what I concentrate on. I do not fill nearly as much and can enjoy more variety.

Just wondering..... is my wife the only person in here who takes desserts (cookies, macarons/macaroons) to go in her purse?

I generally skip all bread. But if there are pretzel rolls or really good looking garlic bread, all bets are off.

Shh, the rules police may see you!

When I was a teen, I worked at a Shakey's Pizza. Women would actually come in with an empty purse, lined with foil. When we would bust them, they'd act "shocked".

No, she is, I guarantee you, NOT the only one. :kill: I used to regularly pack a few zip lock bags to discretely put some Wynncore caramel (then from the Country Club brunch and now from the RFB lounge) or some cookies in a small ziplock bag. You never know when you will be at that machine at 1 am and you want a little somethin' somethin' to snack on or even while in a show, as long as the cookie is soft (no noise) and doesn't smell strong. Even though I am trying to eat a few less sweets, I'll still pack a small bag or two for my mom, which she'll then place in the basket in her scooter under her sweater. There is something decadent about engaging in that act. ;) That is about as daring as I get in Vegas. LOL.

A few trips ago I had a red eye from Vegas back to NY. This was pre weight loss but I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE peanut butter cookies and the Wynn Buffet had the BEST PB cookies. I was openly lamenting missing them and then my waitress brought me two coffee cups with lids in which she encouraged me to pack some cookies for my flight home. I remember enjoying them for a few days after I was back to reality in NY. Made me smile as I literally had a bit of the Wynn buffet with me thousands of miles away. :)

I want to say I always skip bread, but damnit, when I see an amazing piece of garlic bread that's loaded with crap on it I can't help myself. I take at least a few bites.

I usually skip the carving station (I might get a piece of prime rib if it's a really nice buffet like the Wynn) and Italian food. I typically gravitate towards Asian cuisine, seafood and interesting meats.

Must haves if I see them no matter what: chocolate truffle cake or chocolate moose, key lime pie and coconut cream pie.
