One of our members expressed his desire to play the don't but doesn't understand how to place the odds bets. Here's a brief outline if that helps.

Odds on the don't are just like playing odds on the pass line as referenced in the craps sticky above, but in reverse.
In that scenario we base our odds bet on a $5 table.
    10 or 4 pay 2 to 1
    5 or 9 pay 3 to 2
    6 or 8 pay 6 to 5
So if we bet 5 on the pass line, we put 10 or a multiple of 5 behind our pass line bet. In that way we are paid the full amount on our free odds bet,
    5 will get you 10. 10, 20 and so forth on a 4 or 10 (2 TO 1)
On the 5 or 9 it's 3 to 2 so we have to bet 10 odds to get back 15 with a $5 dollar bet, as 5 behind the line won't achieve the full 3 to 2 pay off.
On the 6 or 8 we bet $5 odds gets back 6, 10 get back 12 and so on.

The odds bet is based on our line bet, if we of course have made a point.

The don't pass line is exactly the same but in reverse, we must "Lay" the odds.
In other words we put up the larger amount in odds to be paid in lay odds if the 7 hits, after you have made the come out roll and achieved a point.
If we are using multiples of 10 which makes it simple, we lay 20 to get back 10 ( $30 total) on a 4 or 10, Lay 15 to get back $10 (and of course the original 15 making it $25 Back to you) And $60 to get back $50. (or any multiple of 6 gets back the respective multiple of the number, (5 back to every 6 or multiple thereof bet plus your original bet.)
This sounds more confusing that it is. The dealers will help you if you ask but I recommend starting on a fairly dead table so as not to slow down the game. And of course tipping a helpful dealer is always appreciated.

So why would we want to do this?
It's fun. And I for one win more often on the don't. In fact, I rarely play the pass line anymore. Most of the high rollers I see are on the don't. The odds of the payback are ever so slightly higher, and when you get a few numbers out these working with lay odds you're gambling that 7 will come and save you.
And when it does, That's good. You win all your bets and are paid all at one time.
    Zero to hero!
The downside is that if a shooter on the pass line side keeps hitting his numbers you watch your fortune dwindle in short order, but it's better than losing all your bets at once when the 7 hits and you have a bunch of numbers working across the board with odds on the pass line side. Then all your money goes bye bye at once. Bummer!

How you play has no effect on anyone else on the table, so don't worry about that. Some players don't like to see a don't player winning every time they Crap Out! They get " Crapped out " Over it.

So I say, Give them some cheese! Because you can't have whine without cheese, right?

    Have Fun!

Thanks for this explanation. I have had some of my funnest gambling sessions while on a craps table. I'm not sure why, but I've never bet the dark side. I will have to remember this if I ever cross over.

Much simpler explanation: if you're at a 3x4x5x table, the max odds on the don't is always six times your line bet. Just do that and you will be fine

If you're on a $10 minimum table, such as in every casino on the Strip on a weekend (some higher) six times your line bet would be $60. Working 3 numbers you have $180 out there at risk.
That might just be too much for someone learning the game. Or a low roller like me!
Multiples of 5 or 10 make it simple. Remember this is about playing the odds on the Don't Pass line.
3X4X5X are max Strip odds so double max that on the don't no thank you.

It's correct that your approach risks less (although personally, I don't understand trying to bet multiple numbers when you're on the don't), but why bet less than the only table game wager in the entire casino where there is no house edge??

Never wrapped my thoughts around this and I have never played the dark side....one of my thoughts on this, on the surface, and this may be a dumb question but why not just put all your money (Dont Bet and Odds) up on Dont Pass box right off the bat and get paid even money....I realize there is more risk coming out for a Dont point (7 and 11 lose = 8 combos....... 2,3,wins $...12 push = 4 combos......24 different combos of point numbers) odds are your going to get a point 3 -1 and if factor in the 2,3,12 that makes it 7-2 that your money stays on table and if your living right you will win some with a 2,3....maybe I'm thinking into this to much but laying odds just doesn't sit well with me.....shed some light on the dark side...

I'm amazed at how many craps players have no clue as to what odds they need to put down on a "dont" wager.

I have never played the dark side except for hedge bets....I sat down and thought about what you guys posted and how this works and after crunching the numbers and some thought I get it now....risk and reward...yes my statement was painted to be somewhat true about why not put it all on the Dont Come, if your on a $10 table if I have $30 in the Dont Come box from the get go i'm risking it all (yes it may move to point but if ( Likely to)that nasty 7 comes I will lose all $30) (The pay off will be the same if you can establish a point(Theres the rub),...the risk factor is much lower playing the dont, getting the point and adding odds...From the get go you are only risking your Dont pass bet ($10) and once you get that point then you lay odds....after some thought it makes sense to me now....been playing for years and never really put much thought into Dark Side betting...now I have another weapon in my arsenal....thanks for shedding some light on the Dark Side.
