Where to start the night downtown?

I 2nd this! I love Pizza Rock and who doesn’t love Nacho Daddy when drinking? Mmmmm

 

I highly recommend this for late night. We always end our nights there.

 

You didn't say how old you are so it also depends on that. The D and GG play loud music at night so if you don't like loud music I would stay away from them. But if you are younger and like to watch scantily clad girls or like loud music then those places would fit you fine.

As others have said, the boyd hotels (Cal, MSS and fremont) are more for the "mellow" crowd. The El cortez is for the older/mellower crowd, plus they offer good table play. MSS offers 20x odds on craps, some of the best downtown. Fremont offers $3 bj and crap tables. I personally don't like the 4 queens as it seems kind of crowded and cramped on the casino floor. But they also offer silver strike machines so if you like to play that the 4q have some of the best strike machines in vegas.

Since everything is so close to each other (all within walking distance) you may as well just check out all the downtown casinos. That way you can decide which casino you want to play in.

As for late night eateries, I am partial to the Market St. Café in the Cal. They offer some good late night specials. One of my favorites is the oxtail soup. But they also have a good menu of breakfast and dinner plates at all hours.

 

My first time Downtown was a whirlwind of casinos/places and fuzzy memories !
It was evening hours and alcohol involved...........loved it.
There are so many different "looks" in such a compact area -
which is GREAT !
Take photos .......maybe after your travel........you can figure out exactly where you were later.
Do not be afraid of the "under the canopy" you will be safe "BS".....there's more outside "the canopy" ! ( Fremont St Experience )

 

I vote for Pizza Rock. Try the meatballs and New Yorker pizza. They also have a great late night happy hour.

Thanks everyone for the advice! For the record I am a Millennial though in my defense, I generally don't behave like one. Not the biggest loud music/club/crazy drinking scene kind of guy. The advice I hear from everyone is to walk around and that's what I plan to do. Scout the whole place for next time, like I did on the Strip the first few times.

 

This is against what others say but I would not get cards everywhere right off the bat. I would go run around and when you find the places you want to be the most, get cards there. You can always sign up in the future and get comps at other places. I like to do a new card each time and get those feeler offers. Less play and more comp.

 

This is good advice.
A lot of cards come with offers to new players.
Numerous coupons in the ACG book are for new card members.

 

The only caution I would offer is that if the Friday night you're planning to spend is the first Friday of the month, getting around the First Friday crowd is a hassle. It's not so bad once you get inside FSE, it's not so bad, but the lines to get into it are long. You definitely won't want to go back and forth between the area outside the canopy and the area inside.

Otherwise, there are lots of good suggestions.

 

I do recommend El Cortez even if you are a Millennial -- it's the most classic Vegas joint in Vegas and the best blackjack you will find, and while the patrons are older and skeevier, the crowd seems younger every time I go. Maybe that's just me going in the opposite direction. Anyway, I also recommend checking out the Container Park if you're on that end of downtown: I like to enjoy a hot dog at Cheffini's, particularly "The Grandfather". I agree about oxtail soup at the Market Street Cafe, Pizza Rock and Nacho Daddy being great choices for food. If you do well at the tables and want to treat yourself, Andiamo at The D: if you're solo and don't want to eat at a table, they will serve you at the bar.

 

Late night eats - The Magnolia coffee shop at Four Queens. Became a go-to after Binion's closed theirs.

 

Is there a Nacho Daddy downtown? The one I went to was closer to the strip around the corner from Hard Rock

 

I’d say get dropped at El Cortez because it is definitely located as the easternmost Downtown property and has the most old school feel. As you journey from there I’d say old school feel: Four Queens, Fremont, Binion’s; wannabe Strip: The D, Golden Gate, Downtown Grand; and been a Strip property for years: Golden Nugget. If this is a one night taste of Downtown I would not eat at Golden Nugget. They have nice restaurants but you will be wasting an opportunity. Personally I like Triple George.

 

Here is what I would do. If you are used to the strip I would ask to be dropped at the Golden Nugget. You are going to feel the least amount of shock since the GN is the most "strip like" experience downtown. I would not spend a lot ot time there, but do see the shark tank and wander a bit around the property. Then, I would migrate out to Fremont Street....just take it in. Wander to the right, just wander. There is tons to see and experience. Make sure to be under the Fremont canopy at the top of the hour (at night) at least once to watch a Viva Vision show. The El Cortez will be about 4 blocks to your right straight down Fremont. The reason I would recommend being dropped at the Nugget is that it will give you maximum chance of seeing what Downtown has to offer. If you get dropped at El Cortez, you might not feel the need to go out and explore. Do not spend your entire night a just one location. Move around, explore, enjoy.

Also, don't just explore to the right when leaving the Nugget... You'll want to see Golden Gate, Plaza, MSS, & Cal....and, after you leave the El-Co, head north to Ogden & turn left to visit the DTG... from there, just go north back to FSE.
