More pics from Leeza - 1981 I love these pics - especially the Silverbird because it was not the Silverbird for a very long period. It was formerly the Thunderbird & was owned by Caesars until 1977 when the Dunes owner bought it. Later in 1981 it was sold again and renamed the El Rancho. In 1992 it closed and the building sat vacant until it was finally imploded by Turnberry in 2000. Thanks for sharing Leeza!!
This is the best thread on the board! Wow, am I loving this. Thanks to all for posting, and if anyone else has more of these gems please post them.
I am to young to have seen any of this in person but love seeing the history from a normal persons points of view. Keep them coming!
I found some! Love these old photos! I have a few to share also. They range in date from 1979 - 1993. I'm sure I have more somewhere, but I'll save them for another time. I also threw one in of the MGM for the Cher concert (Dougie, that one's for you :wink) and the wall of M&M's just because I love it. Here are the photos from 1979 my first trip to Vegas. We stayed at MGM which is now Ballys!
Those are *awesome*!! I had no idea they were using the sides of the building as billboards that long ago. And... I wonder what ever happened to that giant tiki at Tropicana?
Wow! Those are some awesome photos! Thanks to everyone for sharing! My first trip wasn't until 2002, so unfortunately I missed most of these.
wow! GREAT pics!! I loved seeing each one. It was especially fun for me to see the old Maxim, which is where my dad and I stayed on my very first trip in 1981! It was hands down the nicest place I'd ever stayed in to that point! Isn't it odd to see some of the casinos with strip entrances for cars? I had forgotten what some of those places looked like with those grand (and some not so grand) entrances... P.S. What is now standing where the old Hacienda stood? I can't place it.
Wow, great pictures. Liked seeing the marquee about the Kenny Kerr show. We sat in the front row and the show was terrible. They had plastic wigs.
This is a great thread! I don't know how I missed this before. I will be visiting my parents next week and I will look through their old albums for pictures I can add. I know there is a set from a trip in the late 70's to the Hilton. This was the trip where it was so HOT that I refused to get out of the car after we drove all the way to Hoover dam. My Dad was ready to throttle me. Anyway, I especially like to see the old marquees pictures listing the old shows. Two thoughts looking at these: Barbie Benton: Did she actually have a talent that would justify putting her on stage for 45 minutes? Annie at the DI: Even back then I can't believe someone put a show with a cast made up of 50% kids on stage in Vegas.
Great pics Angy!! I hope tomorrow is a slow work day - I want to look at some of these closer. I love the Dean Martin marquee and the Desert Inn marquee in Leeza's pic that reads "HOME OF TV'S Vegas" on the bottom.
Hands down the coolest thread I have seen. I love seeing these old pics. We need a collection of all of these to just look through. Anyone looking at this thread is really getting a treat. Please keep posting!!!!
Great pictures everyone! "Anne Margaret" at Caesars. <sigh> Ever since "Viva Las Vegas" did I have the hots for her! Don't tell Mrs Wizard.
My first trip was the previous September. We stayed at the Trop across the street. The skeleton of that was just going up.
