Uber Etiquette

Hi,
For UBER at Las Vegas McCarran Terminal 1, once you get your bags in Baggage Claim head to SELF PARKING area (see signs) then go to Level 2M. You will see many people milling around waiting for their UBER. Pay attention to your AP on your phone as it will alert you when your UBER has arrived with car identification and driver name. UBER is MUCH less expensive than a cab. I live in Centennial Hills (North in Las Vegas) and a cab costs $74 (including tip) and an UBER costs $30 (including tip). Yes, I tip UBER.

You should watch Black Mirror, Season 3 Episode 1 "Nosedive"... it is all about people being obsessed with their social media ratings

 

The driver gets the full tip when tipped through the app, UBER only takes a cut of the fair, not the tip. The tip even hits your credit card as separate line item

 

Thanks for the info on Uber and the tip. However, it is my understanding that the credit card company still takes a share.

 

I’ve tipped exclusively through the app since they added the feature, and I have a 5 star rating.

 

For me a stop light can cost you an extra 3 bucks in a cab x how ever many lights you get caught at where as the UBER is a set rate for the most part. Cleaner nicer cars than most cabs. I can tell you that I trust the UBER driver more than I would cab driver that may long haul you.

 

I would expect that cc fee to hit UBER not the driver, but am not sure.

The appeal of UBER to me is that it is cash free, which was also their original marketing strategy

 

Well, I have a "special" pocket in my vest for "Las Vegas tip money", so it's not a problem for me. Besides, it's LAS VEGAS. You're telling me that you're not carrying cash?

 

I have also not noticed a change in my rating since the tipping feature was added

 

hahaha very good point, I should have clarified that 99% of my UBER usage is outside of Vegas. I too carry tip specific money when in Vegas (for CWs and since they don't comp tips for dining), but it is just habitual to tip in the app when I UBER.

 

I always tip in cash when I can, most people don't want a record of how much they're making in tips, if they're a good driver I tip $5-20 in cash depending on how many places I have them take me lol

 

That would come out of ubers share... same as with any merchant / retail store.. no different than tipping at a restaurant and using your card versus leaving cash on the table...

 

The only reason I said something is that I don't believe the customer should be rated. That was a discussion in another thread.

 

honestly its threads like this that remind me the average age on this board is pretty old. if you asked people under 40 -- especially people that use uber regularly like me i use it at least a few times a week and some of my friends use it daily -- you will find hardly anyone that tips. when i read these posts of people tipping at all but especially people who tip cash to uber i just imagine they are much older people who dont really understand the idea of uber and were also probably late adopters since for most of its existence tipping wasnt even an option and it only became an option because some drivers kept demanding it.

but i bet you still wont find 90% of regular uber users tipping but that number probably goes way down for people over 50 years old who honestly kind of miss the point of the cashless and transparent pricing system. by the way any driver who gives a low rating for not tipping should be immediately reported and uber will close their account.

 

There is one other "over 50 fault". The ability to properly capitalize the beginning of a sentence!

I understand the idea of Uber - and what Uber is doing to conceal/obfuscate that fact.....they can say "we're just an app", but they really ARE a "national cab company". where the drivers are independent contractors/owner-operators of the vehicles. They can shout any legalese they want (and probably get away with it in court), but looking at what this actually is, they are a national cab company using independent contractors.

There's a reason Uber added tipping: they were getting lots of heat not only from their drivers, but from their customers, myself being one of those. You can't attract drivers if you don't pay! I can do math.....and Uber's "math" doesn't add up for the driver in the majority of situations. I drive for a living - I investigated this.

If you look at federal mileage standards for tax purposes (what you can deduct as expenses for owning and operating a vehicle as part of your business), you'll find that for the average midsize vehicle that's about $0.60 per mile. Unless a driver "backs out" that money he/she is not getting an accurate "read" of what they are actually getting paid. And once you do that calculation, and take out Uber's share, the amount left for the driver is scant. Yes, they can claim that on taxes as expenses, but still the vehicle costs are ALL on the driver because it's their vehicle!

Now drivers will oft look for areas/times where price surges are in effect, but Uber is taking steps to keep drivers from cherry picking those areas for fares as well. So even when a driver "goes where the money is", there might not be any money "there" for him because Uber can shut a driver off from accepting a fare if it wants to.

I drive for a living (although not with rideshare companies because their math doesn't add up). No way would I serve up my 30K ride to chew up for their paltry reimbursements. I have told them such, as well as explaining to them that if they don't allow their drivers to accept tips (and therefore actually have a chance to make some decent money) that I will not be using them. Somebody heard it/"us", because now they DO allow it.

So I tip the following: some in the app (to show that I'm putting my money where my mouth is, as well as to show Uber the driver is worth it) and some in cash, amounts depending on the price/distance of the ride. So it will be $3 + $3, $5 + $5, etc. I tell the driver at dropoff that's what I'm doing, and I tell them WHY - and have never failed to get five stars from any driver.

To the under 40's who want tip free service? Good luck with that. Most people who make tips couldn't live much without them, so if you think you're going to get motivated service from these people when they're typically earning a wage near minimum or below.....well.....as stated previously.....good luck with that.

Since I am 65 and have never taken an Uber/Lyft, I found this thread very informative.
