I'm supposed to be going on vacation for a long weekend up in the mountains. Unfortunately all the fires are going to put quite the damper on our plans.

Last night on the news they showed everyone walking around town with masks on. They cancelled school because of unhealthy air. Tourists are canceling their trips.

Now I have until tomorrow afternoon to decide if we're going or not. I really don't want to cancel. We booked this trip at the start of summer and this was the first weekend we could get in. We won't be able to go in October or December as they are booked solid. We might be able to go in early November, but I'll be just back from Vegas and in need of detox. :wink2:

We had planned to hike, and that's probably out because of air quality, but now I can't decide if we should scrap it all or just find a spot by the river to read a book and make the best of it.

    What would you do?

Sonya, we are experiencing that where I live right now. Sky has been filled with smoke and ash for a week, it's been in the 90s, all vegetation is brown, and it hasn't rained in 4 months. You don't want to deal with something like that. It feels like the apocalypse. I am going out of my mind from this.

    Don't go!

SONYA, When there is a mountain fire in my area.... the poluted sp air burns my eyes, you will find ashes all over the place, you will see the ashes on top of cars and houses, it will be super hot weather for days like an oven,
and you will feel sorry for the trees and plants that will be real dry.

The aftermath lasts for years in an area. I got soot from the fires on my balconies. Our whole condo walls had to be cleaned up.

We recently just had a mountain fire last week that lasted for days and the winds blew the hot air and ashes all over the valley. My eyes were hurting from the polluted sp air.

It is not good for your lungs to breath in the air either in that area.

I wouldn't go. My girlfriend lives in the mountains, the fires can change in direction and intensity in a second. You may be in what is considered, a safe area one minute and be put on full evacuation notice the next minute.

Roads get closed from zero visibility from smoke.

It won't feel like a vacation if you end up in the middle of the fire zone.

Not what you wanted to hear, I feel bad for you.

Sonya, I feel your pain trying to make a decision like that, who wants to cancel a vacation and we all need little getaways. However, I do live in the mountains in Colorado and what others have posted is true. Not sure on all the details on exactly where you are and how close you are to the fires and where you are headed, but my thought is will you actually be able to relax and unwind or will you just spend the time where you are worrying about where the fires are and which direction the wind is blowing? and that doesn't sound like a relaxing vacation to me.

I say you go buy some green felt, create your own blackjack table or game of choice, invite some friends over for a fun casino night. Just remember to charge them a "resort fee", hee hee hee

More info - The town we're heading to is Leavenworth, WA. The fire isn't really near there. It seems to be on the east side of the mountains, but the smoke all blows up the canyon and it appears to be bad in town.

We've got the smoke here on the westside too. It's not awful. I've got burning eyes, etc, but I can't figure out how bad it will be.

We have been watching the incident report page - http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3258/
    and the webcam - http://www.leavenworth.org/modules/pages/?pageid=190&path=32|190#id=webcams&num=1

    Their page says
We usually hike when we visit, but I suppose we could do indoor things. We haven't seen the nutcracker museum yet and we've only eaten at a few of the OompaBand/Sausage & Sauerkraut restaurants. And there's always the movie theater. Ugh...

How much contained is the fire? We went through this earlier this year with the colorado springs fire, and it got a lot worse before it got better. To give you an idea of what the air was like, I live 15 miles away from the nearest edge of the fire on an army base...we cancelled all outdoor activity on the base for several days.

My friend lives in Cashmere. Don't go now. Seriously. Due to continued hazardous air quality Cashmere schools will be closed the remainder of this week.

I'd cancel and do something else (like vegas?). Its already not the vacation you envisioned. There will be other camping trips.

Leavenworth is lovely. Cancel and save it for next year when you can do all the things you want and really enjoy it. Pick some other place for your getaway.

I'm trying to cancel this morning but can't get anyone on the phone. :grrr:

We bought a Groupon for this hotel so I'm reluctant to reschedule. I think at this point we just have a credit for the value at the hotel. I might email Groupon and see if I can just get a refund. Bummer.

So now we're looking at the beach. The fresh air will be nice. :evillaugh

I thought about it. I'm going to Vegas in late October. Not sure I can do back to back trips like that and still have a liver. :wink2:

We're going to head to the Oregon Coast. We've got a favorite little getaway place that will be perfect for some R&R.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Bummer to cancel something we've had planned since June, but there will be other days. I even got my refund already!

we will let you know how smoky it was, though we will not be going into wenatchee or leavenworth directly, we will sure be going by. was actually thinking the smokiest would be ellensburg area, or cle elum.

anyway, we are in bozeman for the football game on saturday, last saturday it was pretty good, except hard to see the punts at their highest, but otherwise could see pretty well, and surprised by the air quality being a lot better than it looked like it should be! anyway, saturday after the game are heading west, figure we will have to get as far as wallace or kellogg to get a room, since it is also homecoming weekend in missoula.

sunday, on west, staying at a bnb in bellevue, and a picnic in kirkland, monday night football at qwest field, tuesday antiquing in snohomish...really wondering about the smoke there...and wednesday back to montana.

have fun in oregon, funny how we are going to such a pretty place, and that is where you are leaving from!

That is funny. I'm not leaving because it's icky here, I'm leaving because I need a break. I am already packing wine. :)

Sounds like a fun trip you have planned. We love Wallace so much, I need to get back there. Have fun! I have enough wine that I know I will.

yeah, wallace. home of the miss center of the known universe pageant, a couple pretty good bbq places except on sunday, and some fun old buildings.

not a place i would want to be in during a forest fire in the area.

going to get one of the rest area discount hotel books, and just see what might save us some money in wallace, kellogg, or c d'a/post falls.

smoky from home to bozeman on friday, bozeman to wallace on saturday, and wallace to ellensburg on sunday, cleared off going up the hil to cle elum, and then over the pass was clear except for smoke obscuring view to the south. smokiest definitely at missoula, smoke must have given their 12th man bronchitis, the grizzlies went down! of course, most places the 12th man is the crowd, in missoula it is a defense attorney.

the cats were doing so well that we left bozeman at halftime, were almost to missoula by the end of the game, spent the night in wallace. if you are ever in wallace, idaho, have lunch or dinner at the 1313 club.
coolest thing in the place is the photo of bobby knight talking to his point guard at west point, a guy who turned out to be known as coach k. and whose last name i will not even try to spell. and the food and microbrews are ok, too.

into seattle area sunday, stayed at a bed and breakfast in the bridle trails area of bellevue. them there is nice houses. nice dinner at daughter apartment with roommates, the boyfriends of all 3 of them, and one other mom.

next day, had dim sum for the first time in the international district, after paying the 35 dollars to park the car for the game. then, hooverville bar past safeco for the pregame, and then monday night football. probably the only nfl game i will ever be at, picked a memorable one!

tuesday, antique shopping in snohomish, found a couple bowls we will use for display at the store, then a wine tasting in woodinville, then dinner at a nice italian place in kirkland with the roomies, the boyfriend, and parents of one of the college friends who had met before. with daughter driving and the other set of parents doing the buying this time, we sampled more than one washington cabernet, pretty good stuff being made out there now.

wednesday, home about 10.5 hours of driving time, not nearly as smoky.

Sounds great, Kitson! I made a note about the 1313 club in Wallace. :)

We ended up in Lincoln City, Oregon for the weekend and it was a great choice. We kept looking at the Leavenworth Web Cam and seeing the smoke. Then we looked out the window at the blue sky and roaring surf and felt better.

I even won a discount on our next stay AND managed to get a refund for my Leavenworth Groupon. SCORE!!!
