Any Info On MGM's New Casino In The DC Area?

Our "Question 7" passed so there's a new resort casino coming to the National Harbor from MGM.

Any word on the look? Plans? Name?

I pretty stoked since this will be close by but not close enough that I'd be choked by the traffic (about 10 minutes drive).

MGM is going to cleanup there. There's the Gaylord Hotel and Convention Center there. It's in MD, up a short highway ride from DC, and literally across the bridge from VA.

Tourists, locals, and government folks already come there. It's going to be crazy.

They need to widen some roads tho'. I heard that the casino is going to be built where we normally have Cirque Du Soleil but that's about all I know.

 

I think it is supposed to go up on that hill to the left on the first picture. Won't open I think until 2016. Yes it will crush Penn at Charlestown, WV I imagine and hurt the one in neighboring Anne Arundle county. I live on the VA side so only 30 minutes away and already go to National Harbor 1-2 times per year. MGM has promised to build stuff before and then backed out but this one I think they will do. They are also re-applying for their gaming license back in AC to keep there 50% stake in the Borgata.

Comps will suck at National Harbor though and be nothing close to what MGM can do in LV. State taxes on winnings will be 66 2/3% So they only get to keep 33 1/3% of there gaming profit per MD law I believe. (I believe AC taxes at 8% but I could be wrong and LV perhaps less than that) So only the ultra premium player (1K bettors and 50k coin-inners) can probably expect a room and food offer as they will need to generate revenue and profits on their hotel, food and beverage services just to keep the doors open.

On the bright side I would think the competition will drive down the table limits at Penn's Hollywood casinos.

I was at MarylandLive on Saturday... talked to a senior manager there... she said April 1-15th is when they will start opening table games... I cant wait....
Also dont forget Caesars is going in Bmore as well....
National Harbor is the closest to me so I will be giving MGM alot of action... but National Harbor has gotten ghetto as hell...

 

PG County has become Southeast DC over the past generation. MGM will be scooping up a lot of drug money profits at their tables.

 

I grew up in PG County and live there now.. When I was really young, I moved from DC to there and it was worse.

With that being said, it's not that bad. The area I lived when I was young bordered DC. I live farther away. I don't find National Harbor that bad.

However, keep in mind that the difference between area here and places like Tunica, and others (even Vegas) is that casinos either built those places or rescued them.

PG County and the WashMet area for that matter, are not scraping to get by or needed casinos like other areas.

Basically our area is not and won't be dependent on casinos like Vegas and Tunica.

Many of us that voted in Question 7 simply wanted a casino here. I was actually surprised it passed.

Hell I wanna know about Caesars in Bmore too. I didn't know it was them coming there. Bmore is just 40 minutes away. I go to there Harbor and the drive-in movies up there all the time. Is Baltimore Harbor getting the casino?

There's no way in hell MGM backs out. They are the ones that pushed for the referendum through Peterson and they are ones that spent millions to pass Q7.

@chess - one thing MDLive! won't have over MGM is location and an onsite resort hotel. MGM's hotel won't be huge but hell, look at the location.

It's best location in the WashMet or even Baltimore area for a casino. Tbh, I think it's TOO good. Our traffic here is already f*ck&d (2nd or 3rd worst in the nation) and this location is almost literally in the middle in the Washmet area (if you don't Loudoun County) with 2 major highways going right to it.

I'd be interested to find out what they do with the roads. They are already building the Tanger Outlets at the top of hill after where the casino will be.
