Checked into the B this morning. Asked for the spa tower on purpose to be nearer to Aria, etc. Doesn't really sound special, but I got a 9:00 checkin with a nice pool view. Got just what I asked for.

So by and large the younger folks make for better "targets"?

I believe younger males are the target demographic. It also helps to just scout out the check in area for a few minutes and look for the super friendly clerks.

If you check-in as an invited guest, it seems any clerk is more than willing to oblige any reasonable request.

Maybe, but through lots of online research (including two websites solely devoted to this) and in my own experiences, I'd say your best bet would be a youngish guy. But yeah, there's usually a good chance with anyone.

tried $50 sandwich at ip. in sept.had basic deluxe room booked 11 nights- wanted a fridge
+better room maybe away from construction noise. showed young male clerk sandwich and asked were any complementary upgrades available?.
he said paid for upgrades were available if i wanted. i was stunned into silence
that i could not even score a fridge that i accepted a room overlooking the construction site that i could awaken to the dawn (5am.) chorus of reversing beepers. the room itself was excellent-spotlessy clean-even the carpets were fine in the room -but the carpet in hallway was a bit tatty.
the sandwich worked in The STRAT last year so this was a bit of shock for me.:beer:

My husband and I just stayed at PH Oct 20-Oct 25. He did the $20 sandwich and asked if there were any upgrades available. We were originally comped for our rooms for the week in there standard King Room but, he upgraded us to a fountain view room on the 32nd floor. The windows aren't very big in PH but, it was nice to be able to see the fountains anytime we wanted to.

He was willing to upgrade me to a corner suite but they didn't have any available. He searched for several minutes. Looks like it is completely booked for the weekend.

Did you get any upgrade then? Fountain view or the suite above the deluxe but below corner suite?
Did you do 20 and if no upgrade did he just keep it?

    Thanks

It worked for me back in July. Checked in on a Thurs morning. Had a Terrace Studio booked and was given a one bedroom with a fountain view. Definitely give it a shot. Good luck!

He gave me back my $20. He said tips won't be necessary since he couldn't comp me a free upgrade to a corner suite. Because all corner suites were fully booked he went ahead and gave me a lake view looking at the Bellagio fountains. It was a really busy weekend.

It might. If you're in a park avenue room, it might get you upgraded to madison avenue. Which isn't much, but the small bit of extra space in the room might be nice since you're there for 12 days.

We have booked 2 nights (Jan 22nd to Jan 24) in an Executive Queen Suite at the MGM Grand. Is it worth us trying out the $20 trick? What sort of upgrade should we be trying for?

I wouldn't push it. Just try to get the upgrade and be happy with that. Ask a pit boss or host for line passes. People asking for too much stuff is going to ruin the TDT.
