Catzilla ~ I owe you a drink or three. This was really a spur-of-the moment question I had as my tennis buddies. friends, and family have been talking British Royals to death lately and I really didn't why so many Americans are so passionate about them. As some here have suggested, I guess it's mostly our fascination with celebrity.

As a bizarre aside, I actually had a surprise face-to-face encounter with Princes Charles and Andrew in 1976 in Montreal.

Apparently Sky News disagreed with that idea.

    It's a mystery. :rolleyes2:

As a barely visible speck of a woman on the internet, I regularly get sexist and racist threats and insults in my inbox. I can't even imagine what their "fan mail" is like. I hope they both find happiness and peace in their lives. Although, the Magic 8 Ball says "Outlook not good."

    The horror.

I took it as a reference to Wallis Simpson, whom I believe was refered to in that manner at the time of the abdication.

As far as I can gather the future had been mentioned and talks were at an early stage. They then posted on social media and basically the deal was done and dusted with the Queen shocked as nothing was definite and everyone here thinks she and Charles etc were treated badly by Harry and Meghan. You don’t post those sorts of things on social media without telling or discussing it with your nearest and dearest first, whoever you may be, that is just common courtesy.

As a Brit I've always appreciated how the French and Russians sorted out theirs. Maybe they could be rented out to MGM and have a balcony on the strip they could appear on every hour ?

Deal! Not to worry, ODouls is cheap. We're bound to run into each other eventually at Orleans or Powells in PDX.

Yes I’m curious about the Royals, especially when there is 24/7 coverage. I’ve always enjoyed watching the pomp and circumstance from afar, reading the thousand years of history, and the gossip :goofy:

Strange behavior to post their exit from royal duties on Social Media from a couple who has complained about unfair press coverage and poor treatment, yet run to social media for such an announcement. And to blindside the Queen after she asked them to wait so things could be worked out. For goodness sake she is the Queen of England and by all accounts, her grandson Harry is her favorite royal. Boorish and disrespectful behavior, royalty or no royalty. It’s like publicly giving the finger to everyone in your royal family. It seems to me neither one of them likes playing second fiddle to anyone.

If they want their independence, in Harry’s case born into royalty, 6th in line to the throne, and in Meghan’s case marrying into royalty (they both signed up for the royal duties and obligations that union entailed) why couldn’t they respectfully, quietly and patiently work with the monarchy to achieve the total independence they both want? Why the extreme rush? Why provoke all the drama?

Sit down and work it out in private folks. :peace:

Amen to this. A nation that keeps any number of athletes, rappers, and Kardashians living in high style has no business lecturing anyone on who they choose to "obsess over".

I don't understand how the royal family continues to get paid. It seems they have tens of millions in expense between travel, property, servants, security, etc.

Will the Royal family continue to give Harry an allowance after he leaves the country for good? He will surely need security 24/7...

There are a million and one reasons for the attention this family gets. Not just Americans are interested in British Royals, but the whole world, hence the press coverage, newspapers make profits on it. Great Britain is an interesting country, there was a time the sun never set in its dominions, and the Monarchy has been there for well over a thousand years, except for a brief Cromwell stretch, and I don't mean Barbary Coast, LOL. Given the shape of most of the countries in the world these days, it is nice to have a Monarchy to give an example to the people on how to behave properly, for example, at the opera, but even that seems to be failing these days when we read of this behavior at the Royal Opera.

    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/dec/16/lawyer-repeatedly-punched-royal-opera-house-seat-dispute-court

The attention Royals get has been going on for centuries, not for nothing many operas have been composed on Queens of England. Today the TV series "The Crown" is very popular and there will be a season 4 in a few months.

What will be the fate of the Dukes of Sussex? Will they keep the large income? Will they keep the privileges? Will they move partly to Canada? I am sure millions of people will follow all that closely. This will continue tol be discussed in the US and all over the world on golf courses, on tennis courts, on coffee houses, etc.

I am puzzled Las Vegas does not have a British themed resort with a Buckingham tower with a high limit casino with lots of full pay VP machines with huge progressive sequential royals! LOL

Don't follow it at all, but I'm sure they bring a few quid into the country, too.

After a few years married, he might sign up for a few more tours with the AAC :D

Let me start by saying, I thought the Magna Carta was a very, very wise idea for human history! So, you know where this is going!

Having ready biographies and viewed documentaries of those previously inbred Royals, it is astonishing to me, how they ALL didn’t end up like Czar Nicholas & family. They exulted disgusting privilege for centuries, duly noted in the PBS fictional set of series.

Read a Churchill bio of the House of Marlborough- his family for umpteen generations. Until the dawn of the 20th. Century, the Marlborough servants (aka indentured slaves) of these creatures, were allowed ONE half day off per week. Why? To attend Church, of course.

And descending from an Irishman, who came to Canada in the early 1820s, you can guess what I think of the House of Windsor- grotesque welfare swine all.

It embarrasses me that my country, still has a tangential connection with the Crown-and it wasn’t until 1982 that we became an independent country. All the more absurd, is that the city I live in (4th largest in North America) now has an absolute, total, visible majority presence and obviously, very few present day immigrants originate from England/ Britain.

As for American interest in the Royals? I find that really bizarre. Call me crazy, but didn’t you put yourselves on the map, by ridding yourself of that mad buffoon- George III? (Segue: And I’d bet my life that the present incumbent of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue would LOVE to be King! ) But, that is not the purpose of America- rather a diametrically opposed concept. It really is shameful too, the way American TV Media, Pols & the non hoi polloi simply fawn over & fall down breathlessly over the slightest twitch of the Royal Fops!

Getting back to Harry & Meghan, oddly enough, I have a twinge of sympathy for ancient, Liz. Kids- you made your castle! The taxpayers paid millions of pounds for your wedding & further millions for your accommodations! Don’t want to fulfill the “duties of being a Royal”? Then GTF out! There is no middle ground here. Do your assigned work or flee without a penny of taxpayer’s money.

    And PAY YOUR OWN WAY!

Of course, Meghan has decided to return to Canada and I don’t wish to pay one cent tiaras the style they think they are accustomed to and deserving. End of rant.
