Yeah, I like the Super Bowl, because it means that Nascar is about to get things going in Daytona.

I hope your tongue is in cheek here.

You can't watch curling, but you can watch cars go in circle all day?

What about swimming as a spectator sport? Gotta be the worst. Come on. Amazing athletes but back and forth, back and forth, back and forth ... commercials are a relief.

Hell, I watch cycling. Yep. Crazy, I know.

I like curling but I can't watch more than 20 minutes of it at a time. And it's as worthy to get airtime as all those extreme sports events they brought in to get younger viewers and probably more American medals. The thing I like about the Winter Olympics is all the offbeat sports they show to fill the time between the better known sports. The winter biathlon is pretty cool, especially when you consider it's a way of like in some parts of the world.

I caught part of the curling event last night, it piqued my interest as it reminded me of my favorite bar pastime: shuffleboard. Pretty amazing how those stones can curl around with just a slight rotation.

No tongue in cheek, I'm a Nascar junkie, but I do enjoy the Super Bowl as well.

I can't seem to understand the sweeping of the ice. I don't understand the science of ice being from Hawaii but I guess it constantly "builds up" or something? I know they're trying to provide a smooth path but in my mind with all that previous sweeping the ice should be as smooth as a baby's bottom....

Or is it because they want to do something instead of just standing around? Now that would be boring, lol! :poke::beer:

Yes, this sweeping bothers me, I mean the original curlers were probably on a frozen lake where they had to sweep away snow.

lol, I will try to explain the sweeping....
The ice is not perfectly flat, it is "pebbled" before each game. Water droplets are sprayed on the ice, where it leaves an pebble like surface, this allows the rock to bend or curl in the direction of rotation of the rock. The rock would not curl as much(if at all) on a flat ice surface. By sweeping hard, the top layer of the pebble is melted, keeping the rock from curling as much, also the rock will travel further because there is less resistance. You may also sweep lightly to ensure no foreign hairs, straws, etc get under the rock, that could cause the rock to really overcurl and/or stop too quickly. Hope this helps.....

I'm not a huge fan of watching it, but my husband curls and I admit I find it super fun to play on the rare occasion I go with him.

Also, they usually drink heavily afterwards, so I can really get behind that.

Why do pitchers roll the ball around in their bare hands and scratch around the rubber like a wolverine going after some grub? Why do place-kickers give the football a couple of squishes (and it's not to test the Brady Readiness Factor)? Why do tennis players futz with their strings?

It's usually the batters rolling their balls around before they step into the box.

Thanks for bringing light upon the sweeping part of the game. Now that you've explained it that way the game is very much harder than it looks. It's like a sport science!:nworthy:

I do like the beginning part when the player pushes the rock toward the target. Everything is smooth, calculated, lots of control on the players part. I must admit it's when they start sweeping is where I can't help but grin because it is quite amusing!! (And looks like fun!)

They just said on one of the local chat boards that there was an attendance record set for this year's curling preliminaries.

The great thing a obout curling is you can do your 12 onze and play at same time - what a great sport. Is it any wonders Canada has more golfers and curlers than anywhere else?
