Carson Tower at the Golden Nugget

How big a mistake did I make?

We last stayed at the Golden Nugget 25 years ago. While looking for a hotel to book, we chose the Nugget out of nostalgia, and booked a "refreshed" room in the Carson Tower. Looking at pictures on the net AFTER I booked (research, what's that!) I didn't realize how far away from the action they were.

Has anyone stayed recently, and can you tell me how "refreshed" the room is? Would I be happier trying to upgrade when we arrive (we're there Monday-Wednesday nights; this room is part of a package).

I really like the GN but I have only stayed in the Rush Tower. I believe the refreshed Carson tower room would be a nice room.

 

We've staying in the Carson Tower many times, as well as the Gold Tower. This is the first I've heard of "refreshed" Carson Tower rooms. We never had any issues with them as they were, but we're not terribly picky.

Our last stay was in a remodeled Gold Tower room. It was a bit larger and definitely nicer, as well as much more convenient to the "action." But as I said, we're not picky, and we enjoy walking, so I would be just about as happy in the "old" Carson Tower. We haven't stayed in the Rush Tower.

 

I have stayed in the Carson rooms several times....always find them clean and good sized. It is a walk to the casino, but so is any hotel room on the strip. I don't mind it at all.

 

Thank you all so much! As long as I can get a decent night's sleep I'll be fine. I don't get to go to LV as often as I'd like, so I tend to over-analyze.

 

If a decent night's sleep is a priority to you, then the walk back to the Carson Tower is a feature, not a bug. Based on pictures I've seen, the remodeled rooms are just lovely.

 

As an FYI....I had one room in Carson that overlooked the Event Center for the D, and there was a band on a Monday night. My last stay over a weekend involved my room being several floors above the nightclub, so there was some bass noise on Friday and Saturday nights. They have many rooms in Carson, so just being aware of where some noise might be helps at check in.

 

Just ask at check-in for the least noisy room. In the rush tower the strip side rooms are quiet. The FSE side can be noisy until about 2am. Not sure which Carson tower rooms to ask for.

 

Having stayed many times in the Carson tower, I'd say the most consistently quiet location is the west-facing side (toward the parking garage). North facing in either of the other wings is fine. South facing in the south wing can get not only noise from the D event center, but from the loudspeakers at the jail across the street.

Somebody can correct me, if I'm wrong but I believe that the Carson Tower is the only one that permits smoking.
If that's a factor, then book/upgrade accordingly.
If you're a non-smoker & don't want the longest walk from room-to-casino floor in all of downtown, then I'd try the $20 trick (or the Landry's Card trick) & get upgraded to another tower.

I have stayed in the Carson and Gold tower.
I liked the gold better due to location, but truthfully, carson towers are fine.
Small things, like safe not working or tv, but they can fix whatever was wrong.
Carson upgraded should be fine, as long as you don't mind walking some.

One thing I will say, is that customer service there has really gone down.
Comps are harder to get, and trying to find a host before you leave is hard.
Also, they never comp more than three nights. That means paying a rack rate
for additional nights, and getting resort fees comped is like pulling teeth.

Just know what to expect and you should be fine, especially if you aren't
a big player and are paying for most things no more than three days.

 

To put it into context, the very furthest darkest corner of the Carson Tower is about 890 feet from Fremont St as the crow flies. By comparison, the elevator bank at the Mirage is 890 feet from Las Vegas Boulevard. The casino at MGM is also about 890 feet long as well measured from the centrifuge bar to the lobby.

I wouldn't worry about it. At an average human walking speed of 270 feet per minute, there isn't a room on Fremont St. that isn't within 5 minutes from the action barring elevator time which is a constant anywhere. I've said it before but I think location is just about irrelevant downtown. There are rooms at The D which are closer to the casino floor at The Plaza than certain rooms at Cesars Palace are to certain parts of the casino floor at...Cesars Palace.

Besides, the Carson tower elevators dump out into a nice area right by the pool, a bunch of restaurants, a Starbucks and some slot machines. You'll be happy!

 

woodsie....no argument from me... the Carson Tower walk is still shorter than just about any room-to-casino walk on the strip... but it is the longest room-to-casino walk to be found downtown...

 

I actually measured 1.25 miles from my MGM Room to the closest craps table.

 

OMG! That's awful!! Fine if you are young and able bodied. But for us older folks.... time to look into renting a scooter!!! And heaven forbid you forget something in the room!

 

unless you just really hate walking, the room is fine. sometimes it is nice to be away from the chaos for a while. if you can score a cheap or free upgrade, go for it. I've never tried the $20 trick at the GN.

 

Re the comps, my experience is different than Zoey's. I am a VERY low roller (couple hundred/day), but get 3 nights comped (which includes resort fees), and found a host very easily on my last trip. Also free show tix and some free play. My comped rooms are usually Carson, which work just fine for me. (I like Gold tower best also, but oh well)

 

I did the $20 trick at the GN about a year ago after twice being given about the worst rooms in the Carson Tower for our four-night stay (even though we'd booked directly with them, not through a third party). On my third trip back to the check-in desk I slipped a $20 in the room key folder, protruding so he could see it. I handed it to him and explained that we were there for four nights and didn't want to look at a wall ten feet away while listening to roof-top equipment.

He took the $20 and said he understood (different person than the previous two I'd dealt with). He gave us a north-facing room in the Carson Tower, top floor with a nice view. Also gave us extra coupons (the ones for free buffets and discounts) and a VIP line pass. That came in handy at the buffet a couple of times. I was happy.
