I surely do not know what the deal will be with who gets comped parking... but nobody in their right mind is going to give Valet free and charge for self park. Think it through.

I'm the opposite. I will keep my rental but I am losing incentive to go back to the strip.

Maybe I am missing something. Isn't the strip still dependent on people making relatively last minute decisions to drive in from the coast and stay for the weekend. Do you really think this concept is going to fly with that customer?

It's nickel and diming like this that annoys me.

pay per square toilet paper isn't too far behind

I never rent a car there anyways but this is stupid - especially when they try to sell it as something we should be happy for. United Airlines ex-CEO Jeff Smisek used to piss on people's legs and tell them it was raining too - "changes you'll like" was code for get pissed off at these reductions in service. Same premise here.

It is the nickel and dime thing that is the worst of it. Driven by accounting that can't derive the human factors and the value that is gained or lost by changes in perception.
Most places in the country don't charge for parking, unless you are in a major city, and I think that derived more from an overall supply/demand situation with limited space. The strip may be getting there, but there is not a single MGM casino that I MUST stay at, so they will lose that business. I will also just park elsewhere, and simply play at the casinos that don't charge. Not everyone will do this, but some of us will. Who knows if it will make a difference. The sad part is, that the morons who impose these types of fees are just covering up their inability to properly manage their business. In the old days, the freebies were designed to attract people to come and gamble, but the casinos have done very little to innovate the way people gamble, and so they scramble to find new sources of revenue to supplement their aging business model. Make the gambling fun, and people will gamble. Keep it, slow, old, and boring, and you will find it hard to maximize income.
My example would be Draft Kings or the like. Americans love sports and Fantasy sports betting. It's fast, it's fun, and you can root for your team/player etc. How many casinos have a fantasy sports room/book??? How hard would that be to make?

The worst part is this will lead to the demise of free drinks. At which point, Las Vegas will be just a memory for me as what was once The Greatest City on earth.

Maybe Shifter can update (once the policy kicks into effect) how much they charge to park at the Mansion :)

Not only is parking free at the Mansion, sometimes the cars are :) . There used to be a blue Ferrari parked there all the time. I asked one of the butlers if the owner was just always visiting when I was, or if the car belonged to the hotel. I was told that the owner lost so much over time that they bought him the Ferrari as a gift, and he decided to keep it parked there permanently for his use when he came into town. I guess he was a televangelist-type guy from somewhere in Asia.

Las Vegas is a city because of the automobile. In the major cities referred to so often in stories about paid parking. The cities were developed way before the automobile and therefore were not designed with the automobile in mind. Parking garages in them exist at the cost of other viable business and thus need to generate income or they would become a different business. Las Vegas needs the cars that bring her gamblers, tourists, and conventioneers.

    From another article:

Okay, 'fess up. Who of y'all have been calling & emailing MGM with your most common concern; apparently a need for GPS-enhanced parking privileges? :faint:

If they really wanted to both monetize parking and serve their customers, they would put gas pumps in every parking space. On the more feasible side, they could offer to fill up the car, wash it, and maybe even offer oil changes while the car is in valet. They could overcharge for all of it and make a decent profit.

JR, pay parking is going to be implemented at all MGM-owned properties on the Strip, not just MGM Grand.

I am not concerned about MGM starting to charge for parking, since I have avoided them for years. However, we can expect all other Strip resorts to start charging as well. While there will be complaints, people will eventually just build it into their budget (like resort fees). Your only alternative is to go off-Strip, something that I have been doing more often since I retired 3 years ago. I just need to go ahead and give the local casinos 100% of my business.

I would expect that within a year or so most or all strip properties will charge for parking to retain space for their guests. Why pay to park at Aria or Bellagio when you can park at Cosmo for free and walk next door? The Trop will be the first to follow because of their south end location between all the MGM properties, otherwise their parking will be packed.

I always rent a car when I visit and enjoy the freedom to casino hop easily and quickly. Just another customer unfriendly development to direct me elsewhere. Of course MGM will think of it as just another incentive to stay at their property and not move around as much to avoid the ticket validation hassle or cost.

I'm only staying at the signature now. Parking for them is going to remain free.
