Sitting here the eve before packing up for some more train fun. Now this isn’t the cash express train. This one’s the Amtrak train to whitefish Montana. Every year at Christmas time I give each one of the kids a trip with dad. The oldest did Vegas and Phoenix earlier this month. The youngest wants to go to glacier national Park. So tomorrow afternoon, we’re catching the eastbound train to Chicago but will be getting off earlier than that. Should be an interesting trip. I think it might be a little too early in the season, but will roll with the punches.
Beautiful country. We stayed at a B&B in whitefish. Would love to return, see it again. Have you checked, is Going to the Sun road open? We didn't realize it - we arrived the day after it was opened; I think that was June. Have a great trip.
Have a great trip! My sister lives on Flathead Lake, and I've been to Glacier many times. Amazingly beautiful. The high pass on Going to the Sun road will probably not be clear this early, but some parts of the road will be open, so you'll still be able to get into some of West Glacier. If you're set on getting all the way over to East Glacier to St. Mary you'll have to do the long way round via Route 2, which is also a beautiful drive. Enjoy!
mmmmm, huckleberries!!! My husband’s from MT, so we go often to see family and stay at his family’s lodge on Placid Lake. One of my favorite memories from 10 years ago or so was huckleberry picking with his grandparents, mom and sisters. We got quite a haul, and the next morning featured huckleberry pancakes, which are one of the best things ever.
I have a gallon and a half of huckleberries left in my freezer from last summer. I will have to make those last until July. That's when the berry bushes are typically ripe again. They are good in pies, pancakes, smoothies, ice cream...so many things!
So we got downtown Seattle and decided we needed to have a little bit of a snack before we are stuck with Amtrak cuisine. Cool little restaurant we go to quite often called 13 coins. Good about 300 feet from the train station.
Watch across the street over the King Street station love the architecture such a cool place to take off out of or I should say roll out of
All right, we are on the Empire ! Got a 13 hour train ride, which isn’t too long. Turns out I didn’t navigate the Amtrak website quite right and ended up getting two rooms on accident so not a bad thing for me. One for the Kid in different cars. Probably a good thing for sleeping.. I do love the trains
Oh my heart aches. My child left me for the other room lol he looked like he needed a nap anyway. We are on the move
Wow graced with his presence again he just called me and said he wants to play some cards lol. We made our way from Seattle and we’re heading up over Stevens Pass dinners at seven and should be a great view winding up through the mountains
Well the food was not good but the experience was awesome . So now it’s time to have the gentle clatter of the tracks put me to sleep. Hopefully! Got an early morning tomorrow Whitefish Montana 7:17 am
I love trains. Saw most of Europe with BritRail and Eurail. Only done the Pacific Surfliner along the California coast in the U.S. Nice trip. But I think the one you're taking, with Glacier along the way, is really the cadillac of American train rides. Have fun.
