The worst thing should exclude losses from gambling.

We just got back from a Las Vegas trip where I had a $250 pair of Oakley sunglasses stolen from me.

We got back to our hotel late one night and my girlfriend wanted to play a slot machine one more time before going to bed. I decided to give her company.

I put my sunglasses case down next to the slot machine. She had a great run and we were there for almost an hour. I was so tired I almost fell asleep.

When she finished around 1:00 AM I forgot to take my sunglasses.

We stayed at the Westin Las Vegas. As nice as the hotel is, it draws a bad crowd at night. When I woke up the following morning I realized what I had done. I knew there was less than 1% chance I would see my sunglasses again.

The sunglasses were the poop. Oakley does not even sell them on their retail website any more. They are only available through Oakley Standard Issue website which only sells to the military, police, and fireman.

I was incensed. So incensed that I did something completely irrational. I wanted to recover the replacement cost of the sunglasses so I placed a wager on a week one NFL game for $250.

I asked security to view video tape from the time period they were likely stolen and they were nice enough to do so. The tape showed the sunglasses being taken. Unfortunately the camera did not have facial recognition.

I guess I will be waiting for week one of the NFL season to find out if my losses are doubled.

There was this one New Year's Eve....

We stopped by a friend's house on the way to Vegas to drop off late Christmas presents. Then off to Vegas, where I greeted the New Year buck naked, wearing a green plastic hat and a blinking holiday necklace, swigging champagne from the bottle, dancing in the hotel room window while watching the fireworks. So far, so good, right?

    Wrong.

Turns out I caught a bug from the friend's husband. From 2am on for the next 48 hours, it was nothing but projectile (and I mean projectile!) vomiting and fevered shakes. The fiancé (now wife) had to nurse me back to health if we were ever going to be able to leave town. Without a doubt the worst 48 hours I've ever had, and in my favorite place! :(

I missed my 8AM flight, had to buy another ticket for $145 and stay an extra night. I was not a happy camper.

Sorry that happened to you, but I've never seen a bad crowd at night at the Westin. I've stayed there with my husband 4-5 times. However, that place is crawling with hookers. (It is a crew hotel for most airlines.) Maybe their pimps hang out near them. LOL I don't even know what would be a draw for a bad crowd, that casino is small and boring as hell.

Sorry to say, though, that your sunglasses would likely be stolen at any hotel in any city if they sat there overnight. :(

I was hoping this would come up.

Las Vegas is full of shady people and thieves. In any other city there would probably be a 20% chance I saw my sunglasses again. In that town, less than a 1% chance as I mentioned in my previous post.

I agree. There are definitely more shady people looking for opportunities in Vegas, even those that might not normally be thieves. Vegas definitely has the ability to bring out the worst in people due to alcohol, money loss, etc.

I can't recall anything major, but I apparently have an issue with my phone in Vegas.

One trip, I started drinking before I left the house since my friend was driving her and I to the airport. I left my phone on my kitchen counter and we drove to the airport. We didn't have time to go back. I had to buy a shitty burner phone at Walgreens. I didn't bring my laptop or tablet with me either, so I was very disconnected the whole trip. The only phone number I could remember was my husband's. Luckily I did not have to check in for my flight before getting to the airport.

This past May, I lost my phone IN Vegas. My phone battery was close to dead and my husband and I were playing slots at Cosmo, where we were staying. Well, I was drunk and my phone finally died so I just set it down and walked away. LOL Luckily, our cocktail server came back about 2 minutes later and found it for me. She gave it to security and told them she knew we were staying there and I'd be looking for it in the morning. I called down to security in the morning and they said they did have it! Yay!!! Well, we went down and picked it up and then went about our day. About an hour later, I hear my phone "ding" in my purse and couldn't figure out why because it was dead. Well, I look at it and they had charged it for me. Double yay! :)

Oh, and then another trip, I got drunk and then went up to the room to pass out. A little later, I hear a man say "Mrs. XXX, your friend says you locked her out of the room and we wanted to make sure it was okay to let her in." I look out from under the covers and it is security dude. I say "yes, that's fine, but can you turn off the light, it's too bright in here." LOL

Buddy of mine left his sunglasses somewhere in the GOLD COAST..Was not till we got to the car he realized he left them in there..Checked where they may have been and nothing and lo and behold they were in the lost and found...But If they were not turned in,Neither of us would have declared/described them as 'stolen'..Just a stupid mistake leaving them behind, and not stolen behind your back while you are present.

Few years ago I created a bit of a shitstorm on the old message board when I posted a trip incident where we found a wallet in the backseat of a taxi taking us from the Southpoint to the GC,and we were in kinda rush mode..I asked the driver where his last stop was and he said it was some condos close to the SP...I told him his last fare left his wallet behind and his reaction was just so-so....No call to dispatch etc.9even though the radio is on and you can hear dispatch reports)..To this day-and if it ever happens again-I'm keeping the wallet myself and try calling some numbers in it or having the taxi take us back to that drop off and deliver it back in person...
Just sucked that that day trying to check-in for an event and found out no room was reserved for us,so had to scramble to find a room that night and the GC was the best option that afternoon.
Still hope that guy got his wallet back,he must have been freaking out,but the cabbies attitude about the situation makes me wonder still.Fat wallet and full of cards...

I think saying your sunglasses were stolen is a little over the top. You left them somewhere and someone found them. What if it was a dollar bill, would you say someone stole it or you lost it?

Worst thing that's happened to me (actually my wife). We were at fashion show mall and she was trying clothes on on a dressing room of a high end dept store. She left her purse in the dressing room and came out to get more clothes. Came back and it was gone with $500 cash and ID.

It was right after we turned 21 (bf and gf then) so we couldn't go to bars or gamble together. Luckily the last night a pit boss at rio believed the story and let her drink and play blackjack. It was cool/nice.

I agree about the stolen part, that's not what happened, it would have been great if they were still there( a day later) but they weren't, whoever took them did not steal them. Blame it on being tired, drunk, whatever, but take a little responsibility.I cant think of anything really bad that's ever happened to me there, our room was robbed one time many years ago, but that wasn't that bad for me, they didn't want any of my stuff, the others lost a camera and $100, certainly not the end of the world.

Had a slight mental breakdown the last night of a trip in 2011.

Spent too much time working during what should have been a vacation When the final night rolled around and I couldn't find an empty BJ or poker table, I sulked in the room for the rest of the night. Learned my lesson though about taking too many work calls during a week off. :nono:

Food poisoning from undercooked shrimp scampi at MSS buffet back in 2003. I have gone back to the buffet many times, but have yet to try the shrimp again. Not only was it a wasted day in Vegas, it was probably the most miserably sick I have been in my entire life. Probably saved me some money though!

    Two sunglasses losses.

My husband left his glasses in the door of a rental car at drop off. He called the rental company and they promised to mail them to him, and he would pay for this because they were prescription lenses. They didn't bother. Taught us a lesson, always check everywhere in the rental car.

I lost a pair of brand new $135 custom made clip on sunglasses. I knew where and when within a 2 hour max timeframe. I had them in my purse and pulled some papers out of my purse to give to my husband. These sunglasses were absolutely worthless to anyone else. I went to lost and found for four days. No luck. There sure is a lot of lost stuff. I bought a replacement pair and wrote my cell number on the case.

Another time I lost an expensive gold bracelet at Caesars Palace the afternoon we were checking out. Only missed it when we got to the airport. Might have been in the cab but I don't think so.

So as worse things go, these were just about a loss of a thing. Another time I got a call about something terrible that happened to a family member and we had to fly home.

    Screwed up reservations.
Took a late flight out which turned to the red eye due to delays.
No rooms left even after calling more than 5 times to confirm we are on the way.
Finally got a room about 3am Vegas time which is 6 am Eastern which means we have been up for more than 24 hours.
Placed in a smoking room. Got a few hours sleep and smelt due to the room.
Fought with the guy at the front desk.
Eventually got the right room but by then our system was all out of whack and it essentially ruined the entire trip.

It didn't happen to me, but my daughter-in-law on a trip we all took together last fall. She was sitting with my son while he wanted "five more minutes" at the slots, and left her phone behind. They went right back within the hour but it was gone of course. It was an iPhone so they were able to track it to a seedier residential part of downtown but of course were not going to go in for it, so she ended up having to use their $400+ winnings to buy a new phone while she was there. At least they had the money to pay for it, but it was lousy for them nonetheless.

    JW,

What kind of Oakley's? I am an Oakley fanatic and am quite partial to m-frames. My next purchase will be prescription ones!

Also what game did you bet?

I agree with you... taking something that doesn't belong to you is stealing, it's not "finding".

Straight Jacket; Frame: matte black, Lenses: black iridium polarized.

Oakley has some nice prescription frames.

    Buffalo +6.5 over Chicago Bears.

Unrelated to the loss of my sunglasses I also have took Buffalo in the Hall of Fame game this weekend. I got them at pk when the line opened and the it moved to 2. With line movement like that I like my chances.

I also took Buffalo at 100/1 to win the Super Bowl. They are a sleeper team this year.

Nice shades and a nice bet on the Bills +6.5!

Hopefully you win and can recoup the loss!
