Is it feasible to stay in Tunica while visiting Graceland?

Some friends and I have discussed visiting Graceland in Memphis to pay our respects to the King and I noticed that Tunica seems pretty close to there. Anybody in the area know if it's feasible to stay in Tunica and get our game on and drive over the state line to Memphis to see the sights?

 

Absolutely. Memphis is a very short drive from Tunica

 

Absolutely. We did it a couple of years ago, it is a very easy drive. We were staying at the Horseshoe . Graceland and all the exhibits and stores across the street from Graceland itself will take quite a while to visit and it is a very interesting place. Especially if you're a fan of Elvis.

We had a rental car and also spent time on Beal Street, Sun Studios, Gibson Guitars. We even went over and toured St. Jude's Children's Hospital and had some great Memphis BBQ.

 

Takes about 25 minutes to get to Graceland or Downtown from the casinos.

 

Thanks for the info, everybody. Anybody have suggestions for where to stay? We'd be looking for something nice in the Total Rewards network. I'm a big Elvis and Johnny Cash fan, so I'm getting excited just thinking about this.

 

My vote is the Horseshoe http://www.horseshoetunica.com. Nice place with 3 casinos within walking distance; Horseshoe, Gold Strike www.goldstrikemississippi.com and Roadhouse http://www.tunica-roadhouse.com/. All the other casinos down there are spread out, you will need a car to get around.

Plus, the buffet at the Horseshoe is very nice. A good place for a southern style breakfast. When we were there a couple of years ago there was a made to order breakfast cook who made the absolute best hot cakes, hash browns and eggs I've ever had.

 

If you are looking for a TR casino, go with Harrahs or Horseshoe. As mentioned above, Horseshoe is in a pod with two other casinos. Harrahs is stand alone, but, IMO, the nicer of the two properties

 

I got comped at Harrah's down there. UKFanatic is correct that it's a nice property, especially if you stay in a Veranda room rather than a Terrace room (or better yet, the actual casino tower itself). But that said, please be aware that there is NO TOWN AT ALL around the casino. I'm talkin', no Wendy's, no movie theater, no sports bar, no NOTHING. I didn't expect that.

What wound up happening was, I got up by around $2,100. Bad news=no place cool to spend the money. Good news=no place good to spend the money. I just had all these C-notes until I got back home and could dump them into my bank.

Harrah's is a 35-40 minute drive to the heart of Memphis, as I recall. You just take an access road to the highway and then it's a straight shot at 70 MPH speed limit (if memory serves).

 

This is a good point for visitors who have never been there. There is no real town next to the casinos. There is a very small outlet mall, a couple gas stations, and I think there is still a waffle house and sonic. To find anything else to do, you either have to drive north to Memphis or south to Robinsville (I think that's the name of the town; I made the drive once)

 

Come on man!!! There is a wendy's now close to the sonic.

 

No shit about this...I won all that money, and then I went back to the Veranda Tower. They had a "bar" with about three stools. And there's one other motherf*cker there besides me. And you know what? The guy was from Cleveland, where I went to law school at Case Western, and he led old people on gambling junkets all over the country. So we sat there and bought each other rounds of scotch washed down with beers.

Now you gotta remember, ok? I live in Washington, DC. So if you buy scotch at a bar, it's roundabout 27 dollars. So you're basically never gonna do that. But when you're in Pisspot, USA, it's roughly six dollars. SIX DOLLARS. For entirely serviceable scotch. I can't remember the brand, but it was "________ Reserve", and it rated around a 7 on a scale of 10. So he and I, with our 39 C-Notes between us, kept buying $8 rounds (the beer chaser was two bucks). We tipped 25% each (gave her $10 for an $8 round), and the bartender chick was ecstatic. We could have kept doing that, except we got hungry.

Guess what? We both earned enough tier credits from winning our $4,000ish (combined) that we could get the buffets comped...WITH ALCOHOL.

Then we went to the casino's sports bar, which we didn't even know about because it was kinda hidden, and drank even more $1.50 beers while watching the World Series. In between all of that, we each won another $250 or so in the casino, so we even won back the cash we'd been spending on each other's drinks.

Best night I've ever had in a town whose population is, like, 47 people. Even the staff lived in some other jurisdiction 30-60 minutes away.

 

They are probably trying to keep all of us no-good degenerate gamblers away from the decent folks. LOL!

Well, since Harrah's will close before we can get there, it looks like Horseshoe may be our best bet. I read a little bit about the Roadhouse and that sounds a little too much like a locals bar with slot machines, instead of the kind of place that would be fun for tourists.

How is the service at the Horseshoe? Can we expect some of that famous Southern hospitality I've heard so much about?

 

The rooms at roadhouse are a nice size with a nice bathroom but they really need to be redone. But when we stay in tunica it is usually at the Horseshoe. The premium rooms are bigger than the regular rooms and are in the tower so it is less of a walk to the room but the regular ones are good .

If you have to pay for the rooms check out the Gold Strike(mlife property) it is very nice.
