Convention interference advice

So a group of friends and I who are all teachers are planning a trip to sin city April 5-10. While perusing room costs I kept noticing they were quite pricey. I'm not a newb so I immediately went to check the convention list and boom. Nab. 96000 attendees.

To those of you that have had this conflict before, how did it turn out for you. I am looking for experience in how much the costs of your trip increased when coinciding with a major convention in town, if waiting to book was better or worse etc.

When planning I always assume our rooms at mirage or a similar property will be 75-100 dollars a night because that's how it's always been. This is a major hit to out budgets if we have to pay double

 

If Mirage has a room block on for the convention, the rates may come down when the block expires.

The usual rule of thumb would apply. Book now, check frequently, re-book if rates come down.

 

Except fot the Golden Nugget, the NAB has almost no effect on downtown, so that could be an option.

 

Similarly, how bad is it during the week of CES?

 

I have been during CES and room rates are outrageous for a couple of the days the conference is held. It will be more crowded to walk at times and the casino will have a busier buzz but you will find that most stick to the walk ways on their way to their next destination. My host said CES aren't really gamblers and they are more likely to fine dine and see shows.

 

I am guessing you are going on Spring Break, so you are stuck with the dates. Personally, the FIRST thing we do before a trip is to pull up monthly rate calendars from a few hotels before setting dates.

If the attendance is below plans, rates MIGHT slide down a bit just before the conference. Otherwise, you are stuck with either going slightly off strip, downtown or paying higher rates. You will find a wide range of rates based on what I have seen in the past.

theres a trick , book the convention rates or spring break rates directly but it will take some home work to figure our where they are but if you find them you can save alot of money.
if im corerect the nab is nation association of broadcasters. it might be when they announce new tv shows or fly out stars for shmooze fest.

 

And thanks for the insight guys. I guess we are gonna book mirage or similar in the next week or so and keep checking back hoping for better deals. We were hoping myvegas would open up that week for comp rooms but knowing that a convention is in town now know that ain't happening. Guess my 150000 coins are going to food and shows

NAB is HUGE! We used to go to it every year. It's National Association of Broadcasting. It's all electronic engineers and all their latest creations, robots, etc. IBM, Intel, Sony, Magnavox, etc.

We ran into convention trouble for March 2 through 8. My daughter and her husband are going to the Conexpo-Con/Agg 2014 conference and we thought about going at that time. (expected attendance 150,000). The rates were so outrageous we decided not to go. We will go in July for our anniversary instead.

 

Just took a gander and yikes! It is expensive. On top of conventions, also spring break and just a generally busy time. I would book something refundable immediately. If you see a better deal later on then rebook.

If you can go off strip you can still save... South Point is $62 haha.

You can get a tower room at Luxor about $97 a night, not too bad with this promotion.

Even less if you are ok with the pyramid rooms. Tower rooms are pretty nice there, huge step up from the pyramid. Luxor is always on my list if I need something reasonable.

I looked at a number of other places, all sky high. CET properties and MGM.
