choosing casinos based on owner?

I was just wondering if anybody else does this, not even just with casinos but in general. I love the WynnCore and V/P properties but I don't really care to give money to their owners. I know one small spender wont make any difference whatsoever, so it's more of a principle thing. Is this just silly and should I enjoy whatever I want because it doesn't matter in the end?

 

I don't consider it silly. I won't step into Wynn because they won't comp drinks at the bar, even while playing VP.

I won't step foot in V/P properties because I don't agree with his very public statements he has made. I would get more specific, but then I would get another of the dreaded Sonya wrist slaps and would be in double secret probation.evillaugh

 

I don't like where Sheldon spends his money, so I prefer not to help him earn it. Venetian and Palazzo are beautiful properties but don't get a dime of my money.

 

I guess whether or not it's "silly" depends on the reasoning that you don't want to give money to their owners.

 

I think the silliness also depends on where you draw the line for your convictions. I don't like Sheldon but will still eat at the restaurants there and go to his poker room. But that doesn't mean I think it's silly for someone to say they won't go there for their similar dislike of Sheldon.

 

If something is important to you, does it matter whether others think it's silly? Spend your money how you see fit.

I've been cutting back on the $ I give MGM for the same reason (well, the opposite reason, actually). I'm fortunate with respect to the Vegas properties I like best, though.

 

I don't think it's silly at all! The most power we have as consumers is where we spend our money! I had a terrible experience at a harrahs' hotel, so I choose not to support them. It doesn't matter how little you spend, it's still money

 

I choose casino's based on a number of different factors. Some of those are silly like, "I feel lucky there" or "I always win there". Of course, neither of these will have any effect on how I will do. I also choose based on other factors like, how I feel I am treated, whether the dealers are friendly and can speak English, paytables, casino vibe, location, etc. I dont care who owns the casino as he isnt going to be interacting with me anyway.

 

Its not silly at all and frankly shows conviction to principle if the principle really matters to you. I'm the same way with V/P. I can't stand Adelson both for his politics and his sleazy business dealings both here in the US and in Asia where I was personally involved in a creditor group for a local gaming company in Macau and Sands pulled some of the shadiest (and I still believe corrupt) maneuvers to slow down a project. Of course Adelson doesn't care about "my" money, but I do care about it, and I have no interest in patronizing his hotels even if they are nice.

 

What I meant by silly is probably more "pointless". The reasoning has to do with disliking the owners' actions, words, and general views, especially regarding what they do with the money I would be adding to. Though I'm not sure the why makes a difference here. Very interesting thoughts so far, I appreciate the honest responses.

 

I use my wallet to vote for a lot of different things.....it's why I have only been to the movies about twice in the last few years as I refuse to support about 95% of the acting communities viewpoints. So no, I don't think what you have described is silly at all.......

 

I will never ever part with my money for the benefit of lining the pockets of Sheldon and Trump. I'm happy to see the Donald being sued by the State of NY for $40 million, i wish it was $40 billion.
I yearn for the old days when the Mob ruled Vegas............skimming money from the joints was an art, not blatant like what the casinos do now.

 

If you can't beat them join em...BYD (Boyd Gaming)..I doubled my % investment this year..Not to mention any losses I may encounter at the Gold Coast next week are sponsering the investment in the long run...Now is that the best way to rationalize gambling losses or what?

 

I do that also. Hangover III was the first time I'd been to the movies since 2009 I think. I love Adelson and Wynn, and when I do make it to the strip I spend copious amounts of cash there... So yes I do base play and casino visitation on ownership. Really like the fact that the Venetian/Palazzo are non union as well.

 

I never really like Venelazzo or most MGM casinos. I did kinda like Wynn but I didn't give them much business because it's out of my budget. Since the tip sharing thing and no comp drinks at the bar policy, I've been to Wynncore a couple times more and I didn't feel right in there. Part of the justification for the policies were some outrageous comments against the character of the employees there. I don't think the employees are thieves but it bothers me that the suggestion was put out there.

Venetian has that scent thing that I can't stand. When Palazzo opened, I was willing to give it more of a try, especially since people seem to really love the place. The way Adelson slammed slammed gaming customers as if they were bottom feeders has sufficiently teed me off to never want to return. If they were really losing money on gamblers, they are idiots!

I never really got why everyone thinks so highly of MGM. The company just seems so arrogant. I will still give their casinos a shot but they all seem so sterile that I can't really motivate myself to really stay in them more than an hour or two.

 

Ordinarily I vote with my wallet, but not in Vegas. Our favorite places are Wynncore and V/P, both of which are owned by assholes. But asshole or not, Steve Wynn has imbued his place with atmosphere we enjoy and guaranteed we will get impeccable service. So he gets our bucks, even though I greatly dislike some of his views.

OTOH, he distributes gift cards (and rather large ones) every Christmas through local food banks.

 

Agreed. Normally I will vote with my wallet but not when I am in Vegas.

I go there to have a good time and I enjoy the Vegas experience regardless of what some billionaire's beliefs are.

 

Can't agree more. It's foolish to let emotions determine how you handle money. And a fool and his money are soon parted.

 

This isn't about how you handle your money, its about where you're spending your money. I invest agnostically both professionally and personally, and I've been in and out of LVS several times in my personal account, that's all secondary market anyway. But if you're going to patronize someone's business whose actions (both business and personal) you have a strong stance against then you don't really have much conviction in your stance.

 

yes and no. I equate gambling to investing. very risky investments, but still investing. so if I like V/P and do well there, I'm going to keep playing there regardless of who's on the other end.
