Gold Spike

Vegas chatter had an article about the Gold Spike not taking any reservations. I checked their website and they are not accepting reservations. I have reservations there in early May, so I called and they told me that they have a lot of large groups coming in, and that is why they are not taking reservations. They said they would still honor my reservations. Does anyone know what is going on? Do you think I need a plan B in case my reservations fall through?

They will keep their promise to you to hold your reservation. My advise is to
pay a deposit in advance for a sure thing with all the hotels whenever you book a hotel room anywhere.

Vegas is now a BIG TIME CONVENTION PLACE. Plus, lots of big time Celebrity Award shows are held in Vegas.
Plus, thousands of people attend their Hollywood type of Entertainment shows.

The Gold Spike Hotel is a small hotel compared to the larger hotels. Plus, they are super affordable. They also have a loyal group of people that stay there every year. My parents used to stay at that hotel for many years until they
got too old to go to Vegas. My dad's spirit is there haunting the Casino. That
hotel does have spirits running around the hallways. Believe it or not.

The month of May is the beginning of Summer vacations. Don't worry your

i would most definitely put together a plan B. To be exact i would be booking a room at the El Cortez thru Easyclicktravel...

 

LVA stated that it may be closed/sold very, very soon.

I guess this might put their plans to eliminate the all hand pay slots on hold...it's such an expensive endeavour. Seriously though, they spent all that money renovating the place, making improvements, and then they never made it a place that people want to go. Hand pay slots, tables open only 8 hours a day, poor pay tables, simply pathetic. The plaza will be right behind them.

 

I don't agree at all I think this is the beginning of the end and it will be closed very soon. It just doesn't make sense. Merlin I stay at the plaza when I'm downtown and don't see it closing this weekend it was sold out and casino packed and my host Paul tells me of some new things happening that sound very good. I did see the new sports book that looks great. I'm curious if you know something I don't.

Well, it's certainly not a good thing as far as the spike is concerned, if no one is staying there that means even less people than they have now.Due to the hand pay fiasco, typically there are many times when no one is playing a single slot in the whole place, my experience with the tables(open only 1 shift) is that they are dead as well(I'm usually the only player there), normally there are maybe 10 people sitting at the bar, dont know how much VP they are actually playing though.
If the plaza was actually busy that's a big improvement, others have commented recently that it's still dead(compared with the rest of downtown). I'm planning a trip next month and will report what I see.

All signs pointed to it. Now, it's confirmed. The Gold Spike is shutting down.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal just broke the news that the downtown casino-hotel has been sold to Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project "for an undisclosed amount" and will officially close this Sunday at 3 p.m.

At this time, there's no word on what guests with future reservations will be told nor is it known what Downtown Project has in store for the property.

 

I couldn't find the link to the Review-Journal article mentioned in the last post but this article from Fox5-KVVU TV mentions only a temporary closing as of Sunday so it's still anyones guess as to what's going on.


Downtown Gold Spike sold to Hseih-led group

Downtown Las Vegas hotel and casino Gold Spike has a new owner in a group headed by Zappos CEO Tony Hseih.

The Siegel Group announced Thursday its sale of the property at Ogden Avenue and N. 4th Street to Hseih's Downtown Project. Monetary terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The company said the Gold Spike will temporarily close on Sunday at 3 p.m.
The 112-room Gold Spike, which first opened in 1976, was purchased by the hotel group in 2008, with plans to convert, what the company calls, the smoky, seedy resort into a modern boutique property.

Siegel Group disclosed through a statement its plans to retain as many employees working at the resort. It also said it and the Downtown Project would work to interview any remaining workers resulting from the closure.

Siegel Group did not disclose how many people are working at Gold Spike.

The Siegel Group Nevada Inc. announced Thursday it had sold the Gold Spike hotel and casino for an undisclosed amount to an entity under Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project, a privately funded venture aimed at reviving downtown Las Vegas.

The Downtown Project already owned the note on the property, indicating a transfer was in the works. The Siegel Group’s announcement confirmed it.

According to the Siegel Group, the Gold Spike, which first opened in 1976, will close at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Downtown Project expects to announce its redevelopment plans for the property later this year.
“We weren’t in the position that we needed to sell the building,” Stephen Siegel, president and CEO of the Siegel Group, said Thursday. “We sell things from time to time, if it makes sense.”

Siegel said his company would find as many jobs for employees as it can at its other properties in Las Vegas while those that cannot be placed will be given the opportunity next week to interview with Downtown Project representatives. The casino management contract with Fifth Street Gaming, who runs the Gold Spike’s gaming operations, will end Sunday, Siegel said.

He declined to discuss any financial settlement with Fifth Street Gaming.

“We are in the gaming and real estate business,” Siegel said. “We are looking to upgrade into larger casinos. We want to be on the Strip, and we’ll have to get rid of smaller properties to make that happen.”

Siegel said the deal was a positive development for downtown Las Vegas.

The Downtown Project hasn’t yet stated what it plans to do with the property, which is located near the future headquarters of Zappos, the online shoe and apparel retailer set to occupy the former city hall building at Stewart Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard.

As much as it's sad to see the Gold Spike close, I'm looking forward to seeing the changes that the Downtown Project will bring.

Thank you Popmegaphone! OMG, your reference to the Iraqi Information Minister in this context is absolutely brilliant and hilarious!!

 

The spike deserves their fate, just as the Plaza will deserve theirs, nice brand new casino hotels opened downtown...that refused to compete with the other properties downtown. Just imagine the folly of a casino that requires hand pays on a 50 cent or a dollar slot payout? And then imagine that their reason for keeping the practice, is that it's too expensive to change? Lies, deception and stupidity, hopefully the new owners will realize that they need to offer what gamblers actually want?.

The key point in the closure seems to be that they haven't announced their plan for the "Redevelopment" of the property. Which in plain english means they are NOT going to run it as a casino hotel. This is a horrible day in Las Vegas' history.

There are truly no more "little guy" "poor man" casinos left in las vegas with any kind of charm.

 

i thought i heard one report that they are keeping the floor open after sunday, it's just the rooms closing?

and don't you think the El Cortez still hits the little cheap guy market w/a bit of charm?
