For anyone born after the mid 70's that has never seen the television show Magnum P.I , I recommend it. Hulu has the first season on their site right now. I can't think of a better detective show since that time. Nothing really like it before or after. http://www.hulu.com/magnum-pi I don't think I saw the first season so it looks like I will be watching a lot of Magnum P.I. the next few months. Watching the first episode right now. Good so far. From Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnum,_P.I.
I hope it doesn't disappoint. They way I recall tv shows, movies and computer games fromback in the day aren't as good as in reality. There were great then but now I think jeez this isn't that exciting, funny or the graphics weren't that good at all. There are some exceptions though, scareface for example. Thought twin peaks was cool now I find it boring. Loved Magnum and Miami vice. I'll just stick to my memories, don't want to disappoint myself. Enjoy the show!
My parents let me stay up too late and watch too much tv. I loved pretty much all the detective shows of the 70's and 80's; Columbo, Rockford Files, Hawaii 5-0, Simon & Simon, Vega$, The Equalizer, Remington Steele and a show that only made it 1 season called "Private Eye" a very young Josh Brolin and a very handsome Michael Woods. I'm probably forgetting some shows that kind of blend together in my mind. Magnum has a special place in my heart because Tom Selleck was built like a brick out house in those days. I was a kid but I knew that's how men were supposed to be built. In the first few seasons they had him coming out of the ocean in swim trunks every single episode. He giggled and he had dimples, which also didn't hurt the show at all. James Garner was a very handsome man but he didn't keep himself in shape like Selleck did. Pierce Brosnan was absolutely gorgeous but too skinny for my taste. I had a crush on AJ from Simon & Simon because he was cultured and smart. But, once I got older I realized Rick was the one for me, a lot more fun and down to earth. When I catch one of these shows now, the only show that isn't super cheesy is Columbo. Somehow that show stands up.
How did I forget that Great show! James Garner is fantastic! Growing up, I looked forward to every Maverick show. I think the Maverick series planted the gambling bug in me at a young age.
So weird. For the past month or so, off and on, I have been watching Magnum PI on Netflix. All the seasons are on there. I started with the pilot and have worked my way up to episode 5 of season 3. Magnum and CHiPs were my favorite shows when I was a kid. My kids don't believe me that up until I was 8 years old cable TV was just getting started and we only had 5 channels. They also think it is weird we really didn't have a remote control, unless you count me. My parents usually had me change the channel. Then you'd have to use the outer ring to sort of "fine tune" the signal.
James Garner had serious back problems. That's probably why he "let himself go". . I remember an interview w/ Tom Selleck. They asked the difference between himself + his Magnum character ? He answered, "I'm not a glib, as Magnum." . I loved when they used the nickname "Higgy- baby" on Magnum.:evillaugh . And the way they got a cheap detective driving a brand new expensive sports car, etc = Magnum....Miami Vice....etc.
Facts I love about MPI. Most people are aware of this, but I will throw it out there anyway. Tom Selleck was going to play the role of Indiana Jones but had to turn it down due to the filming of MPI. Does anyone else remember this? I remember these episodes. It cracks me up when they call Rick by his real name Orville to get under his skin. During scenes inside TC's helicopter, the clouds above do not move showing that they filmed those scenes on the ground. I love how they have the actors sometimes look straight into the camera at the audience. I can't remember a show since then that did that. Magnum PI trivia. http://www.crazyabouttv.com/magnumpi.html I am on episode 4 right now on season one on Hulu. Good stuff.
Magnum always knows what I'm thinking. Always. If you don't get that joke, at least once an episode or two he says "I know what you're thinking" and he is always right. Episodes 1&2 of season three were very controversial. You will see why once you get to them.
Got to season 5 last night. There is a still shot of TC, Magnum and a blonde woman in between on TC's helicopter. I tell my GF, that looks like Sharon Stone. Yep- episodes 1&2 (a two parter) of season 5 have a very young, very beautiful Sharon Stone in them.
Watched religiously, and loved Simon & Simon, too. But my two faves of that general era were Moonlighting and Crime Story, both carried by great writing and actors who just fit each role perfectly.
Tom Selleck still makes me swoon I really enjoyed the episode of Las Vegas where TC and Rick from Magnum PI appeared along with the gorgeous Mr Selleck.
CHiPs was a huge favorite of mine when I was a kid as well. Strangely, Sgt Getraer on CHiPs was Tom Sellecks dad on Magnum PI in his flashbacks to when he was a little boy
I remembering reading somewhere that Tom Selleck was once considered for the role of Indiana Jones. Tim
