Anybody know where I can get a whole watermelon (uncut) lol on the strip? I know this sounds asanine, but I LOVE watermelon in the mornings after drinking. Perfect before going to the pool. It would save me a small fortune from having to pay for a breakfast buffet pass everyday just for the watermelon if I could just buy the whole thing somewhere.
As for places that sell them normally, no. You're going to have to go off strip if you want to buy a whole melon (to a supermarket). But, you could try asking a buffet manager or someone from the hotel if you can just buy a whole watermelon. Worst they can do is say "no", but there's a good chance they'll come up with a price (yes, expect to pay more than at the market). I'm not sure how close the nearest supermarket would be, but if you're going to buffets strictly to eat watermelon, it might actually be worth a taxi ride to go get one. Plus, it would be funny as heck to tell the cabbie to wait for a minute and then come out and buckle your melon into the front seat as if it's your grandma or something.
Room service usually has a fruit plate. I'm sure you could just ask for all watermelon. Way pricier than getting one from a supermarket, I'm sure. But probably cheaper than paying for an entire buffet. You can also get watermelon juice at most strip casinos.
As a fellow watermelon lover, this question has got me thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if someone in Vegas offered an all-you-can-eat watermelon (maybe $5/person) stand during the summer months. One of my great pleasures in life is to slake my thirst with chilled pieces of watermelon.
Depending on where you're staying, a reasonably quick bus trip east on Flamingo or Tropicana would get you to a supermarket where you could buy one (and a cooler, if needed) You might also be able to get packages of cut fruit at the drug stores on Strip. I haven't been to the new one by Planet Hollywood yet, but it's huge - 2 stories, 1 of which has tons of groceries & alcohol. (per reviews in other posts on the board) A neighbor just gave us one of his watermelons - my husband was cutting that thing for an hour:evillaugh Of course, he cut it with engineering precision - 1.5 inch rounds, rind cut out, cut into a precise grid of 1-inch pieces But it is delicious!
Speaking of supermarkets, my last Vegas trip I went into the first WalMart all grocery store I had ever seen. Are they common out west?
