In a business known for sharks and gangsters, Gaughan gave everyone a fair shake. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2012/may/06/jackie-gaughan-el-cortez-integral-parts-downtown-v/
I stayed there my last trip and the day I flew out I went into the casino and played poker. I asked when Jackie usually came down and was told about noon. I was on the plane at noon. I asked the poker room manager if he was really the nicest man in the world- I was told he is. The reason I asked that is because I have heard a million stories about him, and that is one thing everyone says about him. I really wished I had gotten to meet him
I saw him playing playing poker a couple times. I wasn't interested in sitting down but how cool would that be. Better than any Pawn Stars buy my t-shirt shit.
thanks for finding and posting that article, dond! one of my favorite memories in las vegas is sitting down next to jackie and playing 1-3 poker with him for a couple hours. he was dressed well, and when i saw the monogram on his cuffs i realized who he was. that and the dealer had to keep reminding him what the bet was. he had a couple of catchphrases, 3 for the money when he called the 3 dollar bet on the river. i congratulated him on his recent renovations and how nice he had made the elcortez look since the last time i had been in, he just sorta nodded and went on with the game.
Kitson, I did the same thing at the Plaza. Didn't realize who he was until after staring at his face on the $1 chips for almost an hour,
